Monday Media Minutiae from the 415 Saloon

I'm back. (Duh.)

NEWS, NOTES and COMMENT: Between the saturation coverage of the unfortunate incident involving the Giants' fan, Bryan Stow, and the Dodgers coming to town tonight, ("mass security presence",) seems that nothing else is being covered. Of course, we haven't even mentioned the Bonds trial and can't wait for that one...Attorney Ivan Golde predicted on knibber that he wouldn't be surprised if Bonds were convicted. I smell a hung jury or outright acquittal...Expect the usual "live team coverage" as the lead from the ballpark tonight with the usual predictable reporters asking stupid questions--"So, Skippy, you're wearing a Dodgers jersey--do you fear your safety? 'Uh, 'blah, blah, blah."...And of course, about 200 shots of the various cops and security yellow-jackets too. All in all, nothing will happen, (of course) and the "Beat LA" chant with endless Giants footage will lead the evening news...A reader tells me that ex-KRON weather diva, Kristy Siefkin, has migrated to KPIX in the morning. Gees, what a concept. More blondiful local weather guessers. How original...Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and KNBR: Your 24-7 Giants media PR dept. Maybe they outta just embargo everyone and everything else and set up shop at Willie Mays Plaza. It's getting rather toy-storyish, actually and oh, by the way, 2011 has arrived. 2010 is over. The ring ceremony was lovely and time to move on...Bruce Jenkins, quit drinking the kool-aid. Maybe we'll see Jenkins go up to Uribe tonight and shake hand, (how disturbing)...One last point: The reason why Scott Ostler stands above the rest, (including the overbearing Jenkins) Ostler can write the column and still be giddy and loving of the locals without becoming the downright homer that Jenkins and his ilk have become...Bonds trial brings in the media heavyweights: Steve Futterman from CBS Radio, Alex Stone from ABC, and a crew from "60 Minutes" waiting in the wings...Talk about unintentional laughter dept: KGO Radio shamelessly trying to capture the younger demo by giving away Charlie Sheen tickets. (Via Twitter, naturally) Dear Jack Swanson: do you even have a phucking clue? I mean, Karel? The complete AM and PM "news" dreck? Maybe you should just broadcast from Facebook and screw the frequency. After all, nobody listens anymore anyway...The A's on "The Wolf--95.7 FM." Sounds good and can actually HEAR the broadcast too. And a plug for pre and post-game host, Chris Townsend...I'm still trying to confirm the non-Giants employees who were given rings and yes, several of our local freeloaders were on the list, (some of whom you'll be surprised to know) I'm still gathering the info and when I'm ready to go, I'll get you all the news...Eric Byrnes: I listened once and that'll be the last...Guilty pleasure: 91.1 Saturday morning jazz brunch...When someone says anything worthwhile on "Chronicle Live", stop me, otherwise I can't watch that anymore...There's more grumbling inside the KTVU newsroom, but that's not news anymore. Sooner or later, someone up top has a decision to make...I neglected to acknowledge longtime KGO-TV anchor/reporter, Carolyn Tyler. My bad. Yes, she's a pro...Gloom and doom shtick jumping the shark personified: Ray Ratto...Never ever thought that Phil Anschutz would be favored over Arianna Huffington. Talk about ironic...Class and stature: Belva Davis. Still...Ronn Owens, Tom Sinkovitz, and Pam Moore were holding court over at the North Beach Restaurant last week. Herb Caen would have been proud...Finally, did you hear? The Dodgers are in town tonight.

  1. blah, blah, blah....same old crap, I hate x, y, z...should have taken a week off instead of a day...I guess that makes me a hater Rich, I mean Pot, yours truly, Kettle

  2. The A's broadcasts sound great. The only problem is having just a half hour of post game with Chris Townsend. Fans have been emailing the GM of the Wolf to get more time. We'll see what happens.

  3. Great new concept, Rich. Paragraphs. You should try them some time. As easy as hitting the "return" key a couple of times every now and then.

If you're going to shit on someone like Kristy Siefkin in your blog, you ought to be man enough to admit in that same blog when you get it wrong. You were all over her about her "behavior" in the KRON newsroom, accusing her of being a diva and predicting she'd be KRON's next morning weather bimbette. But then, when she didn't get the gig, nothing. Silence. Until now, when all of a sudden she's over at KPIX. Have the balls to admit when you get it wrong. (And no, I'm not a friend. Not even an acquaintance. Just someone who thinks she might be a BILF.) That goes for anyone you choose to trash without any actual facts.

  4. Format, please!

I listen to KGO from 7am until 4pm, during my work day, mostly as background noise. I, too, find it hilarious that the morning news is playing to the 18-35 market (of which I am not) by posting on FB and Twitter, etc. Too bad. I don't dislike Jennifer Jones Lee as much as you do, but I think she's part of the plan to bring in the younger demographic.

Tom Sinkovitz and Pam Moore are Bay Area media royalty, in my opinion. Ronn Owens is just royalty in his own mind.

  5. Rich, today's entry full of deja vu.
    Predictable and tired formula:
-Envy and jealousy re the Giants and their marketing.
-Calling a writer a homer after he criticizes an Oakland team/facility.
-Praising and pushing an A's broadcast.
-Misogynistic line re a weather reporter.
    -More digs at KGO

  6. I just heard Kristy Siefkin doing weather on KCBS. She's a very fine looking woman, now it makes sense that radio wouldnt be her only gig. But,what was the fallout at KRON?
Also, why did KRON hire Justine from Boston,to almost never use her?..just minutes per day,and I have yet to see her or Darya say a word to each other. Compared to ch 5 or 7 whe're they are one happy group of campers,KRON's anchors are like zoo animals kept apart.

  7. PLEASE -- Someone with a working brain in the media circus around here needs to pick up Tom Sinkovitz! He's a huge loss, another poor decision made by these head honchos more concerned about getting blonde babes on air than using the top pro available in the area. Haven't seen Belva Davis for a while, like Carolyn Tyler, she is a great newscaster.

  8. Why no recent speculation on the imminent demise of 7Live, especially since Valari is no longer at the mouse house.

  9. Glad Kristy Siefkin is gone from KRON! What an airhead!!

  10. Let me guess-Lew Dickey and Lee Hammer were given rings?...and I think I heard,Murph was too?..The Giants reward the "team media" and crush the critics..ask D.Bruce, who now loves all things with power locally. From doing a wickedly funny Radnich impersonation..back to Gary is "Great, blah, blah". Sad. I heard Bruce say just a couple of hours ago his show is now all happy talk-something like that...joking or truth...or both?
You know how it came out Fitz'a KNBR salarie was paid by the Warriors? Somebody see who signs,or co -signs Murphs checks. I suspect a Neukom might be in there.

  11. Kristy Siefkin started today at KPIX. Man, if KPIX didn't already start to looking like KRON, now they are even closer to being KRON. Now, if I hear that their CBS affiliation has been lost, then I will know that the KRON situation has come full circle, and migrated over to KPIX. KPIX sucks so bad right now in the mornings. I was watching it for the weather, when Lawrence Karnow was on, but this morning, even the weather sucked with that Kristy airhead. Will someone PLEASE hire John Kessler, so we can have a decent local news show in the morning???

  12. Did you recycle this through a "Rich Lieberman" blog post generator? Same old hate.

Dude: The Giants won their 1st world series in SF; it's a big deal. Get over it!

Maybe if the A's moved out of that pig-sty Mt. Davis, they might draw fans. I say this as someone who held A's season tix for ten years during the 90's

  13. One station's trash is another one's treasure.. hopefully Kristy Siefkin makes friends at her new gig, because she sure left a sour taste in KRON's mouth.

Too bad KPIX 5 preliminary reports point to the on-air staff hating her there, too. What a shame.

  14. So did Lon Simmons get a ring too besides the rest of the Giants broadcasting team? It almost sounded like it the other day.

  15. The Giants are really milking this one world series win. I can't wait until they revert to the perennial losers they always have been, choking on the A's on the field success.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Choking on the ‘on field success for the A's’ is just another ‘if a tree falls in the forest’ metaphor, there is nobody there to see it other than a few forest creatures. I’ve tried to catch the A’s broadcasts in the south bay and it’s a no go. No promotion, no discussion no buzz.

    Nobody cares.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow. "Nobody cares?" Way to give yourself up as a knbr sheep. It's funny how people forget that the A's outdrew the giants in attendance before at&t. We're talking about thirty or so years of dominance in every way. Peoople sure have short term memory around here.

  18. KPIX stole KRON's intern.. that is so very classic. Ad who's the bottom feeder station, Rich?

Kristy Siefkin and Elizabeth look like the Sweet Valley high twins in the morning- minus the rack

  19. Anon 11:23
The Giants outdrew the A's 7 out of the last 10 years that they played at Candlestick. A's had better attendance in the 80's though.

  20. KGO morning news sucks. Ed Baxter sucks up to the interviewees too much. Jennifer Jones Lee usually asked many dumb and obvious questions. They are spending too much reading copies from SFGate.com or getting their news leads from KCBS 740. Someone worked @ 900 Front Street told me that there is no original thought at that news room and the TV news. I can go on but it would reveal my source. =)) I think it is time for ppl at KNBR to take over the 900 Front Street and end the existence of the news room. =)) ... Just kidding. ...

  21. Above post really made a great comment. Why is KPIX hiring a woman from another station, possibly not fit for the job, when my favorite weatherman (and super smart, too) Lawrence Karnow waits on the sideline? I'm not naive enough to believe he actually digs working weekends.... So riddle me that? Why does upper mgmt only think viewers want looks in lieu of substance? If its just because Kristy will work for pennies on Lawrence's dollars then its only a matter of time before KRON's entire intern staff becomes full timers at KPIX. Good luck staying relevant, PIX. Your credibility just went out the door, except for the weekends when my super science brainiac Larry is on. Heart.

  22. Scott Ostler was funny when he first joined the Chronicle, but I stopped enjoying his writing when they moved him from sports to that horrible column in the first section.

His humor falls flat for me when I read it in recent years. I find him boring.
