KNBR's Dibley ignores Zito accident in News blocks

The news that Giants pitcher, Barry Zito, was involved in an auto accident, is not a huge story, but when you're the flagship station of the franchise, you'd figure Zito's Wednesday night car fracas would at least garner attention in the sports news blocks.

Not.

KNBR's sports reader, Dan Dibley, failed to mention the Zito accident during the "Morning Show", instead giving top billing to a meaningless late March Warriors game against Memphis. A second story read was Santa Clara's victory in a lower- tier college basketball tourney. (I didn't listen to any of the show after 7.)

The Morning Show performers referenced it after about fifteen minutes after going on the air.

A few things: It's not so much that KNBR didn't report the Zito accident--it was a relatively minor incident and Zito appears to have not been seriously injured. It's the fact that Dibley didn't even include it in his hourly updates. Both KGO and KCBS had it in their opening five minutes--in fact, Rich Walcoff had it for the KGO lead at 5: 05, (it IS, after all, Opening Day, and a prominent Giants player is affected.)

This type of insulation from the so-called "Sports Leader" and how it regards legitimate news is a prime example of KNBR's abysmal reputation. It essentially is a promotional tool for the Giants and any non-baseball news is merely thrown under the rug, without the approval of Giants top brass.

I'm not suggesting the Zito accident was that huge as to garner gavel-to-gavel coverage, but not even mentioning it is a joke. Even Giants' fans deserve to know the goings-on off the field and KNBR and/or Dibley ignored it.

I shouldn't be shocked nor surprised anymore, but this latest beauty deserves special attention.

  1. I don't think being involved in a fender bender constitutes news that needs to be made public, now if he was drunk I would understand. Also he did report on it an hour before you wrote this post.

  2. Sorry it was 2 hours ago

    @DanDibley

@DatJDizzle haven't seen any new report on Zito's condition. He was treated and released from Cedar Sinai after the crash #beatLA

  3. What he Tweets is his personal decision-I bet the delay on KNBR is because he has to clear something like that with both Hammer and the Giants. In other words, the big KNBR propaganda machine had to think about how it would report to the world.

  4. Dibley is a dweeb that doesn't belong within 2 miles of a microphone. He can't read, he's not
articulate, but he sucks up= the perfect KNBR
    staffer.

  5. PLEASE HELP me from finding a bridge or something sharp in my kitchen.

I CANNOT listen to BYRNES on KNBR. I tried AGAIN last night. The first 45 minutes he talked about Dennis Quaid being rude to Tolbert. Rude?!? Byrnes is the most self centered 11 million dollar bust softball player we have ever known. For what seemed like too long he talked about the songs they play that they call rejoin songs as well as TWITTER. Who cares about TWITTER.

Hammer must have had an anuerism to hire Byrnes...and who needs Krukow and Kuiper 12 months a year...OMG>

Dan Dibbley just did an INTRO to the Giants vs Dodger game. HORRIBLE. He called Andres Torres...Andreas Torres.

    Oh...wait, there's a pair of scissors....

  6. When it is a player from the team you are the flagship station for, you absolutely announce it. What a joke, but no surprise.

  10. Dibley really does need speach therapy-that lisp is going to take him nowhere other than KNBR traffic and HS games. He's a smart guy..but its sports and most people are on that topic. Like Rich says, sports is the toy section of real news.
