**The self-anointed "most powerful man" in Bay Area sports media has all the juice of a wet slice of wonder bread when his KRON buddy just got sacked after 28 years at the Van Ness barn. "Most powerful?" Where? Tommy's Joynt?
**Comcast SportsNet Bay Area: 15,722 HD monitors, 500 satellite trucks, state-of-the-art studios, and 5 or 6 "Insiders" that are heavy on splash and very dry on substance. Content matters, guys and gals. OK, Giants, A's, Warriors, Sharks, Raiders all dandy, but after that, what's so revolutionary? And "Chronicle Live"? A potential cutting-edge show that stays between the chalk lines and hardly ever ventures into anything beyond the usual sports minutiae. (Whether or not I'm on.) Attention, Griggs and Olivere: You have a brand--use it. And as long as we're here, yes, what the hell is Amy G doing on TV? Please, I know its cable, but my gawd, she's beyond embarrassing. You know it, I know it, and every soul with a quarter brain knows it.
**KPIX/CBS5: Every industry person keeps asking: "What is happening there?" They keep leaving, the reporters, the anchors, what's going on? Good question. Deserves an answer.
**"7Live": How can such a fairly decent KGO-TV programming division keep such a horrible, god-awful, insufferable hour-long quagmire like this on? Answer: They tried to be "unique" and it bit them in the ass. Nobody watches it and its on life support about to be replaced in the future by a judge show. By that time, the janitors will be able to sanitize the studio and last studio "audience." Until then, keep the children away and stack up on Red Bull.
**KQED-TV: After 36 years of pledge breaks, this is the best you can do? Seriously now.
**KNBR: DOA until the Giants play. Why not run "Giants replay" 24-7? OK, every now and then, the pizza guy does a decent interview. Next.
KGO Radio: Your new Facebook radio network occasionally interrupted by TMZ and....After Ronn Owens and John Rothmann, truly a bad funeral.
KRON: Insert:.......?
NBC Bay Area: I'm the only guy in the Bay Area that likes Raj Mathai and Christina Loren--by the way, Ms. Loren? (I don't care if they're real, fake, whatever, you give me hope and inspiration.)
Jan Wahl: Can you fit a mattress in that hat?
KCBS: Don't rest on your laurels. You have essentially no competition and an FM outlet to boot. And Steve, Stan, and Susan? Don't be so cuddly to Madden--I mean, he's not Jesus Christ, close, but seriously, quit the heavy breathing.
KTVU: A smooth-sailing ship with a captain that thinks he's irreplaceable.You're not--ask around, (quietly)
KGO-TV: Good and unusually tranquil considering the mothership and its wholesale personnel reduction on the West Coast. (Psst, Janelle Wang: we love you, but the newsroom isn't so thrilled.)
SF APPEAL: Thank God for Bay City News.
BAY CITIZEN: Without Heilman's money and the NYTimes badge, you'd be just another "news" site that relies on restaurant reviews, cute photos, flashy graphics, and "quirky" SF "stories." Can you be a tad original?
SFist: See above.
EAST BAY EXPRESS: Pot dispensary ads, more pot ads, Bob Gammon expose#212 on Don Perata, Rachel Swann loves chick comics that talk about their chick friends and partners; decent movie reviews, pretty decent restaurant reviews and oh yes, pot ads.
SFGATE: Bauer, Ostler, Carroll and a few snippets of Morford. Everything else, ...
RITA WILLIAMS: Best TV street reporter in the Bay Area. Period. End of story, (and should be paid better than a smidgen over scale)
BOB MELROSE: Best radio street reporter.
BARBARA TAYLOR: What would SF City Hall be like without you?
JON BRISTOW: Right guy. Wrong time.
DAMON BRUCE: A pain in the ass like most talented people are in radio, but nevertheless a force to be reckoned with--Attn: Cumulus: He's got suitors hovering near the building and ready to make a splash somewhere if not here, if the price is right. Just might want to pay him even if Larry Baer and Sabean are not on the karma train.
SAL CASTANEDA: Deserves more than mere traffic and occasional reporting. A hidden diamond in the rough.
DANA KING: She's gorgeous, talented and a thorough professional. No, not an A, but a solid B+--why do so many people disagree with me?
CAROLYN JOHNSON: Star power.
MARK IBANEZ: Never underestimate him, (Mr. Chapuis, he's great reading the news too, sorry to piss you off.)
JAYMEE SIRE: Just remember once you turn 40...
KIM COYLE: The anti-Mindi Bach, who actually knows what she's talking about, Mindi that is.
SCOTT REISS: There's only one Jim Nance and that's about one too much, although keeping in mind the "keep it clean and edible" Comcast corporate business model, that means you have a permanent gig until some 27 year-old white guy from Buffalo emerges and's willing to work for about a quarter of what you get.
KEN WAYNE: Underrated.
BILL MARTIN: Don't take him for granted.
KCSM: Gob Bless you all.
KAREL: Much ado about nothing.
PHIL HENDRIE: Genius.
BRIAN SUSSMAN: The nicest guy off the air whose show I can't stand on the air.
JACK SWANSON: The captain of the Titanic.
DEIDRE LIEBERMAN: Way to schmooze Ben Fong-Torres, but seriously, you gotta be kidding. (No, she's not...and oh, btw, no relation)
PAT THURSTON: down, way up, a little more down and now slightly off the meter.
DAN ROSENHEIM: Chill, dude. I don't have to work for you, with you...just relax, have a Guinness on me.
BILL WATTENBURG: The password is: xanex.
GIANTS PRESS CORPS: 9 days away from brown toilet paper dept.
BRIAN COPELAND: Don't lose the pictures.

ReplyDeleteRICH LIEBERMAN: a media wannabe who never could make it the business and thus has to take shots at those who have and whose only claim to fame is a Round Table pizza commercial from the 1980s
If KRON or KNBR told Radnich to turn his back on his best friend-he would. Warning Ray Woodson.
ReplyDeleteDamon Bruce has been all good to the company lately, says nice things about Rod and his friend Bob. But he's been going to the conservative side to fit in or hang on to his company job..
Live at 7? two young hot chicks-and they stand hidden behind podiums? Does FOX news hide their hottys attributes? And that set-depressing. Is it supposed to be post apocaplypse? Like they are trying to drive people to change the channel.
Kim Coyle has that Darya vibe..you know-why do THEY last?
Comcast-its like Griggs is on auto pilot..no changes,no improvements. Griggs did nothing on Fanfest or Super Bowl week. Comcast paid guests spent a strange amount of time of saying how they werent going to the SB "Because it isnt what it used to be"..no,its now 100x bigger, you nitwits.
Unfortunately, Rich reveals his lack of taste - and knowledge of the SF Market:
ReplyDelete**The self-anointed "most powerful man" in Bay Area sports media has all the juice...."Most powerful?" Where? Tommy's Joynt?" -
WHO...CARES? Your personal vendetta against Radnich is so freakin' old. Move....ON.
"SF APPEAL: Thank God for Bay City News."
- This one makes me laugh the most. Everyone in the SF news biz knows Bay City News is average at best and below average most of the time. One of the few agencies who will talk to ya, Rich?
"SAL CASTANEDA: Deserves more than mere traffic and occasional reporting. A hidden diamond in the rough." -
Uhhhh...Not hidden....and not even a CZ in the rough. Serviceable traffic and sometime news reporter. He's been in the market for 25 years.
...These are just three examples. I want to like this blog (not enough is written about local media), but it's difficult given the author's lack of basic market knowledge. Tighten, up Rich.
Rich, perfect! You made my day! Well written, I love when you tell it like it is! Bravo.
ReplyDeleteTo RichIsWrongQuiteoften:
ReplyDeleteYou're even more annoying than Rich is...Your examples are bullsh*t. Rich, don't listen to that ass-clown.
Sour grapes and transparent at that.
ReplyDeleteThis column is almost as funny (and sad) as your "speculation" that Pat Thurston is "being groomed" for a job at KGO. Hey, Rich: She doesn't *need* grooming, SHE HAS THE JOB, which you didn't rate.
Rich, I dedicate this YouTube clip to you:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I30iBJsKqdM
LOL, I think the haters are just jealous, Rich. Find a sense of humor, people.
ReplyDeleteLove this blog!
The haters are just insiders who are recipients of the criticism dished by Rich. They take themselves waaay too seriously. Keep up the good work Rich. BTW are these two recent entries what you referred to as the “dirty little secrets” you were going to publish today? I hope not. My expectations are way high….
ReplyDeleteJeez, haters, it's a blog, not a column. It may be free but the entertainment value is priceless, especially for the expected reactions among the more thin-skinned of Rich's targets.
ReplyDeletepeople love to throw around the term haters - well after periodically reading this blog for a good time now, it seems the most consistent hater is Rich himself... and I also love the fact that people that have some problems with this blog have to be insider recipients or targets of Rich...
ReplyDeleteOf course the haters are insiders. I highly doubt your average Joe six pack would come to this blog and defend Darya Folsom, the 9 to noon guys and/or vehemently deny that Pat Thurston is “being groomed” for a job at KGO…these are insiders and their hired henchmen/women
ReplyDeleteBar none, Richard, Steve Paulson on 2 is far and away the best in the Market, best delivery, best information and more accurate then everyone combined including Bill Martin. No contest here, It is important to be accurate and he it and does his homework.
ReplyDeleteWhen the going got tough (Guingona dismissal) Radnich went running.
ReplyDeleteEntertaining, yes. 100% factual, uh...no. But that's ok. I guess...
ReplyDeleteI'd agree that Amy G. is like enduring fingernails on a blackboard...but the rest of your rants are pretty off-the-wall. I simply quit listening to Radnich, and my world is more pleasant...maybe you should try that too.
ReplyDeleteWatched Mindi Bach last night on Chronicle Live- very professional. She had Ann Killion on with her, and Ann surprisingly was dead wrong on some of things she said about Cal.
ReplyDeleteEd and Jen on the KGO morning news are quite a pair.can't stand them...
ReplyDeleteSussman appears like he'd be likable in person; however his on air persona is very predictable and annoying. His approach is: Obama bad, Republican good and let me bring in all these obscure goons who are peddling their web site and newsletters to support my points of view. The only good part of his show is the 7:30am stretch. Sussman, you are not Michael Savage. Only Savage can pull off the predictable anti-Obama banter because at the same time he can also talk about squidding, his aching bones and the bad Chinese meal he ate the night before.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of you and Radnich,he opened his show with a story of Pam Moore going to court over somebody who writes about her, talks about her on the internet, quotes what she said..Radnich then added,it wasnt sexual and that he didnt make threats..just wrote to her often and blogged about her.
ReplyDeleteMy gut feeling is that it wasnt Radnich concerned so much about Pam Moore as it was Radnich wondering outloud if he might do that, and the story was more of a veiled threat of bloggers who-heaven forbib-write what he actually says, and are also critical. I'm sure Rich was near the top of the list on who he hoped was listening..but not the only one..
If Radnich ever brings forth legal action against The Great Rich Lieberman, I'd contribute to Rich's legal defense fund. It would be a huge PR disaster for "Raddie". Besides, Radnich is probably too worried about losing his job at KRON to be concerned with this blog. Additionally, in order to bring forth a lawsuit Radnich would need to spend big time on attorneys. He's simply trying to silence Rich with not so veiled threats. Don't let him get his way Rich!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I also stopped listening to Radnich and the whole group. Satellite radio has so much more going for it in terms of sports.
ReplyDeleteKNBR is really like a bunch of cranky old men. Haven't listened (aside from Giants Games) to them in almost a year, don't miss it at all.
Damon Bruce talented, suitors right. Smells like Farrell revisited to me..
ReplyDeleteRaj Mathai is horrible. He was a lame sports host, and has none of the gravitas to be an anchor. He's too busy pretending to be the viewer's best friend, and coming up with phony teases going to commercial. Did I turn to him to hear about the revolution in Egypt? No. It would be like turning to a high school kid for current events.
ReplyDeletei heard Radnich mention Rich by name once on KNBR in a kind of dimissive way that would be expected of someone who is being criticized - but for the most part i don't think he's referring to Rich when he's talking with disdain about bloggers in general...i think the hatefest is mostly a one-way street...
ReplyDeleteand i'd be a little surprised if there were many suitors for Damon Bruce as he's just not that talented - he has to try too hard...he's good on basketball but that's about it...and nobody wants to hear his mother on there picking football games or that over that over the hill gal who's supposed to be hot?? she sounds like a grandma...at least he's not an a##hole/jerk like Ferrall though...
Someone needs to stir up local media circus and this blog is doing that just famously. I have seen computer screens of some high ranking management people checking this blog on daily basis.
ReplyDeleteSorry to see Dave lose his job, good man and hard worker.
