'Sweatshop' Conditions inside KTVU Newsroom; ND Chapuis at heart of the Matter

There is an abundant amount of discord inside the newsroom at KTVU, with severe griping among writers and editors who are working overload on massive story counts, particularly during the morning on the new "Mornings on Two, Weekend."

At the heart of the matter? News director, Ed Chapuis, who runs the operation like a cattle call, according to a source familiar with the newsroom guidance. To be fair, under Chapuis' stewardship, KTVU's numbers have remained steady and still dominate the local ratings, but the griping is getting more intense, according to the source.

"The writers are pissed--the story line count is ridiculous, " said the source. "They're over-worked."

Indeed having watched the first few weekend "MO2's", there's far more stories and not too many reporters in the field. And when you have two hours to fill when there's not a ton of news, you have to get content somehow and somewhere.

  1. Weekend news, particularly in the AM, shouldn't mimic the Mon-Fri counterpart. Viewers don't want to watch countless VO/SOT's of meaningless information just to fill time. Perhaps after a some growing pains, KTVU will get two anchors with personalities in there (seriously) to do a more fun and energetic version of MO2 weekend with less news and highlight more lighthearted weekend events-- and the writers will become less cranky.

  2. Weekend mornings shouldn't be like weekday mornings.. yes in name and basic style, but a bit kinder and gentler is in order. People aren't rushing out of the house.. they are getting up and want a more relaxed approach... at least that's what I think... slam bam doesn't get ratings.. it gets people irritable.

  4. Why would it matter they repeat the same stories over every 10 minutes

  5. They should look at what MO2 was during the 90s and use that as a model for the weekend edition :)

  6. What they need to do is drop the big desk, sit with a glass table like ch5's weekend morning show.
Plus, you get a nice glimpse of Wong gams...

  7. They need that Ross Magowan guy or someone like him. I don't want bodies and fires with my coffee and scrambled eggs on Saturday/Sunday morning. Also what happened to channel 2's depth? Seems like all their stories are shorter and there is a lot more useless stuff in the show.
