This is a note from a good friend of KGO Radio's Gene Burns on his condition: (the friend requested anonymity)
"Gene fell again about nine days ago. He has been in the hospital
since then, but today is being moved to a rehab facility for a
short time. He will be back.
Concern when I and others visited him in the hospital was that he
seemed mentally out of it. Thank God we found out that was because
he was way over medicated...
EVERYONE LOVES HIM."
Wait a minute, he fell AGAIN after the fall that broke his ribs? Am I correct in how I'm interpreting the above quote you cited? If he's falling so often then he may be better off moving around in a wheelchair. I'm not kidding.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for Gene's speedy recvoery and return to the airwaves; his show is always entertaining.
ReplyDelete"Mentally out of it"?
ReplyDeleteSounds qualified for KSFO.
Poor guy! Knowing of Gene's physical limitations (due to a neck injury about 10 or 15 years ago and being close to legally blind), I've always marveled at the full of life spirit and intellectual energy he exhibits during his weekday show and Saturday food & wine show. It's really quite amazing. JW
ReplyDeleteThinking good thoughts for Gene's speedy recovery. He's been my favorite talk show host for many years, back to his (our) Boston days.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this update, Rich.
Thank you, Rich, for the update. I really appreciate it. I adore Gene Burns and was very, very worried about him. I hope he has a speedy recovery and soon his brilliant light is back shining from a rapidly dimming KGO Radio.
ReplyDeleteLife just won't be the same until Gene is back on at 7:00. I wish him only the very best. His fans miss him!
ReplyDeleteGodspeed and good luck to Mr. Burns!
ReplyDeleteWhile Mr. Owens spends lots of time on Happy Talk about Uncle Matty (the dog guy), and the stable of liberal hosts insinuate that any caller who mentions a non-PC fact as a racist or xenophobe; Mr. Burns is one of the few who can deal with harsh realities, be it urban crime, out-of-control state spending, or drug-addicted citizens (relatives).
This is not to say that he is perfect. When he supported universal health care, I asked him about cost, to which he replied: "I don't care what it costs!" Not the usual circumspect Gene Burns, though I did want to defenestrate him! (A joke only Burns could appreciate.)
I pray that his loved ones, and KGO, help him get a one-floor residence or an in-house studio. (Don't Dr. Bill, Ray Taliaferro (and Karel) have these?) But I'm selfish. I'd love to hear more from him.
Best wishes, Mark in Walnut Creek
Mark...Karel hasn't been on KGO for quite a while..Bill has remote capability. Ray is always in the studio...always.
ReplyDeleteI wish him a speedy recovery, but he's so out of touch with the every day world, I just have to change the station any time he's on.
ReplyDeleteIt was good to hear him calling in the other day. He's been through, and is going through quite a lot. Based on what I heard, I wouldn't expect him back anytime soon. Such a shame.
ReplyDeleteOh, and Karel's coming back to KGO at the end of the month. No comment.
Gene Burns is the best talk show host I've ever heard; the Bay Area is very lucky to have him. I hope he recovers quickly and engages us in much more civil discussion as only he can.
ReplyDeleteGene dearheart,
ReplyDeleteGet well as soon as possible which I know you are doing. It is not the same without your wonderful commanding voice and knowledge of the English language. You are my radio buddy.
Gene -- I was so sorry to hear of your falling and subsequent injury. I miss listening to you on KGO. I sending out good thoughts for a speedy and complete recovery and will be waiting to hear your voice again very soon...I hope!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Pat Thurston (except when she's glossing over illegal immigration-a serious blind spot of hers), and will savor Karel's return (with his sharp wit and straight up honesty), but Gene is pretty special, a unique blend of common sense and serious wordcraft. Hope he gets well soon and returns to the airwaves. The longer he's gone, the more concerned I get about both his health, and his eventual return to the air. He's a master of his craft, waaaaay better than the temperamental and rude Ray Taliaferro (Who last night was ranting that the perjury trial of Barry Bonds was race motivated by a racist prosecutor!). (No Ray, it's about lying on the stand, dude)
ReplyDeleteAh well, so it goes...farewell to Gene and here's hoping he lands somewhere soon so I can tune in there !! What a waste.
ReplyDeleteI'm very happy to find this site. I wanted to thank you for ones time for this particularly fantastic read!! I definitely really liked every bit of it and i also have you book marked to check out new stuff in your web site.
