Cohn nails York, (again); 30 Minutes with Bruce on 49ers/Harbaugh Affair

Give me Lowell Cohn from the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat on the radio every day. Please. Hurry up.

Cohn did a one-on-one with KNBR 1050's Damon Bruce from 2: 30- 3PM on Thursday. As usual, he was funny, biting, to the point and well, spot on. It helped that Bruce steered the ship and Cohn went from there.

The topic was, of course, the 49ers and their apparent unsuccessful bid to get Jim Harbaugh on the payroll as coach, (various reports have Miami conquering the beloved Stanford guru at about $40M over five years)

Cohn called 49ers owner, Jed York, a "nice guy", but hey, "I'm a nice guy too, but I wouldn't know how to run a football team."

He all but called the franchise inept and unworthy of any serious coaching candidate. He was Lowell being Lowell.

No giggling, no sound effects, no nonsense, just another pithy half-hour with one of the Bay Area's best writers, and oh, by the way, Cohn didn't pay me to say that, I just made it a point to listen.

I'd love to hear more of this on KNBR. It's "good radio" created by talented people. That's a keeper in the business.

And suffice to say, it sure beats the hell out of the morons on 680.

  1. If you listen close, you notice the morons on 680 to a man worship Lowell, but even though they laugh and guffaw..they are NOT agreeing with him as much as the tone seems to imply. Radnich will laugh non stop..and never agree with a single critical remark Lowell makes of managements, and pretty much contradicts him from the time they hang up. I think a lot of that is they want to keep on the good side of Lowell so as not to read their names in his column under "Todays stupid KNBR host/hosts remarks".
Lowell, as all local sports writers gives KNBR a pass. His only weak spot. I cant see how they differentiate between ripping stupid sports players and management and local(they do rip national on occasion) "celebrity" media sports hosts. All should be fair game.

  2. If Jed York would have hired a Legitimate GM, from outside of the 49er Organization...They might have been able to attract a viable Candidate as Head coach.

Trent Baalke puts Jed in his COMFORT ZONE, and does not Challenge him. If Jed had an Experienced GM, he would have sat Jed down and said, "we have to offer Jim Harbaugh Pete Carroll money to get him as the Head Coach." But instead the *Buddies*, Jed & Trent LOW-BALLED Jim Harbaugh, and now the deal for Harbaugh is History.

  3. They low-balled him? Offered a college coach $4.5 to $5.0, $6.0 with incentives, that's low-balling? Tom Cable's option, not exercised by the Raiders, was for $2.5M. Almost all the college coaches hired into the NFL, all very successful in college, have failed in the NFL. And the best coach in the NFL (Bill Belichick) makes $7.5M. The screwed up front office might have put him off, but they sure didn't low-ball him.

  4. The head moron on knbr says it's ok to lie if you are standing behind a podium, as he defends Jed York's lies about searching for a GM and coach . Ranks right up there with his stupid defense of thugs if they didn't have a father figure in their lives. "Pound it pound it pound it" is all those clowns on knbr are good for these days.

  5. @7:48pm....
As I said b4, Jim Harbaugh wanted what Pete Carroll got in Seattle $6 mil...

Jed York, and Trent Baalke responded by offering $4.5 mil to Jim Harbaugh...

Also Stanford Unversity has come back to Jim Harbaugh with an offer of $5 mil. All above what the 49ers offered their perspective candidate Harbaugh, for Head Coach.

Just like Larry Beil of KGO, ch.7 said on tonights newscast, "Trent Baalke, and Jed York walked into a Gun Fight, with a Butter Knife," with the money offer they made to Harbaugh.

You do the math as to the question, "did the 49ers low-balled Harbaugh"...

Btw...I believe Harbaugh will return to Stanford, especially since his star QB Luck is returning to School.

  6. Listened to Cohn,Dickey, and a San Jose Merc. reporter on Ken Ditto's show this morning; good alternative to the drivel Radnitch disseminates daily.

  7. My favorite Lowell Cohn moment was when the Giants were thinking about building a ballpark south of Market and Cohn went to the location at night and listened to the game from a lawn chair. His conclusion: South of Market was just as miserable as Candlestick Point. Nice call Lowell.

  9. So Jed got his man. Does Cohn now admit that he's a bitter stupid old man.
