Carter B. Smith 'gravely ill'; Longtime Bay Area Radio Personality; Stints at KNBR/KSFO
Legendary Bay Area radio personality Carter B. Smith is gravely ill and may have only days to live, according to a media source friendly with him.
Born in San Francisco, he had popular DJ shows on KNBR in the '70s and, after that, on KFRC (when it was Magic 61) and KABL. But in the '60s, he was known as KSFO morning man Don Sherwood's sidekick and filled in for "Donnie Babe."
Smith has won numerous radio awards and was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2007.

Carter B Smith worked in the radio era when you had to have talent and a great voice.
ReplyDeleteI had the great pleasure of working with him at KNBR. There is NOT a nicer man in the business. Carter would let me call in my weather on KNBR from any phone booth I could find and even during the dull summer months we would always find something topical to talk about. Rich, If he were on the air today, you know he would be at least 99% better then anyone else on any station in the market. Peace Carter! sincerely, Mike Pechner
ReplyDeleteI love you Carter B.

he was the reason that I started listening to KNBR and then got hooked on the Giants. What a great talent
ReplyDeleteHe had one of the greatest taglines of all time about himself: "A prince, trapped in the body of a disk jockey." He was always very literate and engaging. We've lost a great talent.
