RL 415 Flash--Comcast set to take over NBC Bay Area Sports--Raj Mathai To Head to News-UPDATE

UPDATE,(see below)
RL 415 Media EXCLUSIVE--

I'm getting word, (now confirmed) that with Comcast about to take over the fort at NBC Bay Area, (and controlling interest of NBC) sports news programming on the NBC Southbay outlet will run directly from Comcast and that, according to the source, primary sports anchor, Raj Mathai, would be moving to news.

Mathai has done some occasional news anchoring, (like KTVU's Mark Ibanez and KGO's Larry Beil,) so this would not be an unusual move, and according to an industry insider, NBC Bay Area management likes Mathai and would not want to lose him.

Mathai was unavailable for comment at post time.

UPDATE:--7: 50 PST

Sources close to Mathai have confirmed his new gig at Comcast/NBC Bay Area. An official announcement is imminent.

  1. Sorry. I like Raj but as a sports guy not a news anchor. Nobody at Comcast Bay Area is as good as Raj (not counting specialty niche anchors like Randy Hahn/Drew Remenda). But I will not be able to accept Raj as a straight news guy. It's amazing how quickly I can lose my affinity for KNTV. First Lisa Kim gets dropped, now they try to fit a square peg in a round hole by making Raj Mathai a straight news guy.

If Comcast is hell bent on shoving Comcast Sports Network stuff on KNTV, the solution is simple...hire Raj Mathai to Comcast and plug him in on KNTV.
