HERE THEY COME.
Swarming little news vans with torsos that encircle a city looking and "reporting" early "word" of what's supposed to happen Friday night.
The Mehserle sentencing will be announced sometime shortly after 8: 30 AM Friday. Without saying so because that would be cruel, many of the local slugs are hoping the judge goes light on the ex-BART officer convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Oscar Grant.
Because a few storefronts in Downtown Oakland have been boarded up, the slugs have already begun chirping. "TEAM COVERAGE" with "rioting" the convenient underbelly is awash and ready to roll. Hell, I can already detect the early giddies going wild on Broadway searching for an early-bird protester.
For sure, it's a story. There's no denying that and we've been accustomed to it for almost two years now. But there's a point, even in this marginalized local TV news world, where a little levity is due. Please?
If there's more cameras and gushing a-hole correspondents looking for anything, then we have a problem. We, dare I say this, need some sanity. Responsibility too, (paging Jon Stewart.)
So, sure, get 'em out there, assignment editors, and let 'em do their thing, but be advised of the ramifications that bring about lazy reactionary "live shots." We don't need any more vultures looking for action and gee-wizz gushies reacting foolishly over some lone schmuck breaking a window.
