KPIX hires New Morning News Anchor; Frank Mallicoat takes over; John Kessler Update

KPIX-CBS5 has hired Frank Mallicoat as its new morning news anchor. He begins in February.

Mallicoat, who is from the Bay Area, was a  reporter at Fox-owned WFXT-25 in Boston. He replaces the popular John Kessler and Sydnie Kohara.

Kessler was not retained by PIX and left in September after eight years at the CBS o and o. The status of Kohara is unknown.

Meanwhile, Kessler is enjoying life at his Pacifica home and told me, over lunch, that he remains optimistic that he'll be back on the Bay Area airwaves sometime soon.

"I've talked to a few people and they're looking things over. We'll see."

Kessler didn't have the biggest numbers in the market to justify his roughly $300K salary, but his popularity is undeniable. On Facebook, there's a "Bring back John Kessler" page and Kessler has been inundated by supporting letters.

"Frankly, I'm blown away," said an unassuming Kessler. "I had no idea."

Neither apparently did KPIX, although as I had assumed, this wasn't their decision. This was a move made by CBS brass in NY and Kessler confirmed it.

Let's hope that a local station that wants immediate identity and a solid pro hires Kessler. He's well respected and liked, is a dedicated newsman and brings a loyal audience.

  3. Its funny because the guy Dave Clark replaced had a tons better relationship with the co anchor Torry. She has very little interaction with Dave going on what? a year now? The body language says more too.

  4. Everytime I hear Dave Clark's name, I expect the other 4 guys to show up. Sorry, I couldn't resist... ;-)

  5. AMEN, on the post about Dave Clark. Great comments, and all comments ring very true. Dave Clark is probably a very nice guy, but he just doesn't fit in with the Mornings on 2 crew.

I don't believe Dave would fit in with anybodys News Station here in Northern California, because he very Los Angeles...thats where his last job was located at.

  6. KTVU should grab Kessler. He comes across as trustworthy and solid, the hallmarks of KTVU in the old days when Fred whatshisname was news director. But 300K? He just reads the stuff. Put the big bucks in the newsroom. The important part of news show is NEWS, not show.

  7. Being originally from the Boston area, I can attest that Frank Mallicoat will be a welcome addition to KPIX's news team. Frank is genuinely friendly gentleman who connects to the viewer very well and seamlessly transitions between stories. I know everybody loved him in New England all these years and who didn't. I think the Bay Area will take to Frank very nicely indeed.

  10. Frank Mallicoat is a genuinely nice guy and an excellent news anchor. We will miss him here in New England. After dealing with over 2 feet of snow today, I guess Frank's decision to go home to the Bay area is kind of understandable!

  11. I don't know John Kessler, but I can understand how upset you are at losing him. That's how we in Boston feel now that Frank Mallicoat has left us for the Bay area. Good luck Frank! We want you back!!!

  14. John Kessler was so much better than with Sydney Kohara than Frank. Don't like watching channel 5 in the morning.

Also, agree totally, Dave Clark is awful. Don't know why they chose him when Frank moved to nights.

  15. John Kessler and Sydney Kohara were a good match. What were the execs. thinking? I miss Ann Duckworth too. KPIX in the morning is just not worth watching anymore. The new anchor is too stiff. You need a balance. I'm going to switch morning stations.

  16. Frank might be a nice guy - but watching him in a non-scripted role is difficult. Rule number one: don't try to be smarter than you are!

  17. Frank is okay, but it is hard to see how he is an improvement.

NIce enough, but not funny and has a bit of an annoying voice.

  18. Mallicoat does seem like a nice guy. And he's a local guy! Coo! I understand that he's been in Boston for years. But on his drive out, didn't he have enough time to know how to pronounce the Oakland mayor's name? First day on, he read it as the French "Jean." To his credit, he says he knew right away that he said it wrong. Just does't instill a lot of confidence in his knowledge of local affairs. I suspect he has the interest. Might have been better if KPIS didn't play up the local by comes home angle.

  19. I am addressing this to "frank m." the new guy.I know there are people who have not accepted and will never accept President Obama as our leader. However I do feel the professionals who deliver the news should address our President as that. "Mr. Obama" should not be the term used when speaking of the Leader of our country on television. Proper respect of a proper title was earned when the election was won.

  20. Nice guy this Frankie, but oh so hum drum. Bring Kessler back somewhere in the Bay area.

  21. When Kessler comes back, I'll be turning to that station. Until then, why bother watching, except to find out which station hired the latest weather girl to get ratings...
