So formula, so, so predictable: do live show, (shot) following local beloved team's game and get the usual suspects, (lots of screaming, yelling, incoherent rants, the works) and subsequently wonder why a lot of the masses simply blow it off and do more civilized things, like going to the Internet.
**Truly, in the local TV news biz handbook, the formula is simple: the obligatory aftermath of a Giants race to the pennant at home, go to all the elements...
Following the Giants loss to the Phillies Thursday night, KTVU conducted a roughly thirty-minute post-game show. Between Mark Ibanez and Fred Inglis fairly solid in-stadium reports was a rather sorry display of the usual banal, incoherent and outright obnoxious "fan" reaction that mostly bordered on the ridiculous to the absurd. Yeah, I know, this is what's supposed to happen when drunken people go ga-ga after home team performance. (Wonder what would have happened had they won?)
KTVU, normally more reliable and sanguine, even in this dept., sent three reporters out to get the local mood and flavor of the moment. Two were sent to bars and one, John Sasaki, had the lovely assignment of talking to inebriated goombahs outside the ballpark.
Sasaki managed to get a guy to lob a "Shit" word clear over the airwaves which we all saw coming and weren't disappointed. In the background of Sasaki's "live report", lots of various, "Go Giants screaming", yelling, noise combined with other post-game malaise. Real inspirational stuff.
Later on, two, that's 2!, different reporters from two different bars in North Beach and the Mission to get the word out that while the screaming, drunken, fans were a tad bummed, "we'll get 'em Philly", at least I think that's what they said because in bars it's hard to hear when 99% of the folks are screaming and yelling and making the reporters look sort of, we'll, uneasy. (I'm sure Rob Roth just loved this assignment.)
**I got a quick glimpse of Comcast's show after the game, (more yelling, screaming, fan noise) and decided to cut back to Channel 2 just in time to catch the verbal mayhem. It wasn't totally spectacular, but it beat turning on CNN and watching with the other 12 people.
**Yeah, I know, I'm critical. What gall to call into question the validity of shoving microphones into obviously awkward-looking reporters talking to shit-faced fans who consumed about 16 Bud's and whiskey-sour shots lamenting the loss of the hometown nine.
But that's what we want. We expect it too. The consultants make damn clear its in the eternal playbook and darn it, you move away from the playbook and oh, maybe try something innovative, (like maybe, for instance, talking to the vendors? the guy with his hot girlfriend in section2 inside the park?, maybe a kid with an Ipod wearing a Giants cap?--is that too hard?--just asking)
If you enjoy this very spirited coverage, stay tuned for Saturday and/or Sunday night--I have a feeling we're going to see a lot more. YIPPEE!
**Add Radnich: The usual dreck from the 9-Noon Knibber who did his usual, predictable, "you have a good time, they, (Giants) have been so good this year, even if they lose, they've been so exciting...BLAH, BLAH, BLAH....his two brown-nose enablers also with their assorted verbal blather too.
You got to remember Rich-what do young fans here know about how to behave as their team go for a championship? The old schoolers had those aplenty from the 70's-mid 90's.
ReplyDeleteI dont recall any live f-bombs or the like in all the live Raider,49er,A's runs postgame shows.
The local teams need to reteach by example.
The ridiculous Radnitch is unlistenable; a most disingenuous man.
ReplyDeleteThe only live f-bomb I remember is Will Clark's. ;-)
