KCBS' Stan Bunger and sports anchor, Steve Bitker, normally pretty solid, decided to punt, badly, in their inability to ask a legitimate question to John Madden about the Brett Favre allegations.
Favre's team, the Minnesota Vikings, played the Jets on Monday Night Football. Madden normally talks about the game on Tuesday with the KCBS morning team.
Madden has been a fierce Favre supporter and admirer, (to a point where comedians have done impressions and lampoons) and it would have been nice to get his opinion, directly, on, A. his feelings about Favre and the allegations, (which Favre has not directly denied) B. would it affect Favre? C. now that mainstream sports outlets are reporting the allegations and the NFL itself is investigating, how did Madden feel himself?
Instead, we got a very short, watered-down, only indirect question by Bunger and Bitker who seemed to merely want to tap dance around Madden. I mean, a very simple, "Coach, there's some unsavory allegations out there about one of the NFL's most popular players--a player you have admired and continue to admire. What do you make of the allegations?
Pretty simple, right? Wrong.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that maybe Madden didn't want to talk about Brett Favre's alleged escapades off the field, but it would have been nice to hear at least Bunger, (who did not respond to an email question) ask him directly. I know KCBS and Madden have built up a very cozy, popular segment, (for which I have stated that I really like)
Too bad.
Here's the entire Tuesday segment. You be the judge.
**KGO Radio was off the air for well over an hour Tuesday morning, (transmitter problems) Could it have been the "Ghost of Mickey" at work? Anyway, both the morning news, Ronn Owens, and everything else were affected. (KGO went back on the air at 9: 14, finally) Their on-line stream was working.
Must have been a swell first day for new GM, Deidra Lieberman, (no relation); I'm sure there's a multitude of symbolism's we could allude to here, but I'm a little tired and need some coffee.
Since moving to the Bay Area and becoming a KGO fan several years ago, I've been surprised at how many transmitter problems they have. I'm a compulsive radio listener and have some background in the biz, and I've never noticed this with any other major station -- at least not since the days of vacuum tube technology.
ReplyDeleteIf you've listened to Madden often, as you claim, you'd notice he refuses to comment on the more salacious topics that bleed into the sports arena. He obviously does not want to lower himself to go there and Bunger and Bitker are merely showing respect by not broaching these matters with him. Foreign concept?
