On Kim Coyle and Radnich

A person I respect in the biz got on me: "You were way outta line on Kim Coyle."

NO, I wasn't, I shot back.

Let me say up front, I don't know Coyle very well, but I've seen much of her work and am not impressed, but it's not personal at all. I'm sure Coyle is a nice lady, but she doesn't do much for me as a reporter and there's a good reason why she's been asked to do the 49ers highlights show.

Just the other day, an e-mailer called me out on Coyle because she's a woman. Ha! Gotta laugh at that one.

FACT: I've written a ton about how much I love Andrea Kramer on NBC and her award-winning work on HBO Real Sports. I'm not a misogynist. There's a lot of great women in broadcasting. Coyle, in my opinion, is not one of them.

**RADNICH post--

I called out the 9-Nooner, (today) on his horrible performance. As usual, received a lot of amens and the usual skeptics who think I have it in for Raddy--I don't.

I just said the other day that KNBR should have him conduct the weekly Q and A with Mike Singletary, highlighting his work as an astute interviewer. When he's ON, I've lauded him and when he's OFF, like he was today, (three hours of pointless, unfunny, banalities and interrupting TBruno) then I'm going to call him out.

Yes, I listen to him , listen to Owens too and Krasny and all the others. It's part of the gig. I'm consistent. I've never gone personal on him, (as he has with me,) but that's another story.

The fact that not one sports minion dares question his legitimacy of late speaks volumes about just what the so-called "critics" in this town have been reduced to. They are beholden to kissing his ass to get on to plug their column--I'm not and as long as I keep writing this blog, I will always be honest. Pro and con.

  1. I've seen Kim Coyle over the years..and its a mystery why she's employed. She's stiff as a board on air, reads her scripts in a slow, lifeless monotone, and couldn't ad libb a zinger to save her life. And what's the worst? her smile is pasted on. I truly-no joke- think that if she didnt dye her hair blond, she wouldnt be in the business, wouldnt have lasted.
Speaking of Singletary, you notice that Mac of Murphy and Mac rarely asks Singletary any questions? some weeks not a single breath. Again, how about Singletary putting out the word he doesnt like the more impish Pauley Mac,so goes with dress wearer Murphy? He and Coyle, two miniskirted submissives to the insecure Singletary.

  2. I recall meeting Kim Coyle at the San Jose GP several years ago, and I hung around to watch her do a segment for the morning news; she seemed brighter and more personable in that setting then she does typically. I suspect that there is more to Kim that there appears.

  3. Didn't you get kicked out of the 49ers press box for being a nut job?

  4. Who approves your comments? Do you walk around with that hard-on for Gary Radnich all day long?

  5. With regards to the whole beef over Radnich. It does come off as petty to me. The notion that he should have 'read the room' ignores the fact that most of the callers wanted to talk about the Giants. Was it more newsworthy? Perhaps not, but KGO reporting on it (KGO is the flagship station for Cal Football, mind you) doesn't seem like the best litmus test for what people wanted to talk about. The story has also petered out quite a bit since it broke on Tuesday. Ralph & Tom naturally spoke at some length about it because (a) their afternoon show slot allows for more lengthy discussions on topics, and (b) they were discussing it as it broke (i.e., when it was hot).

Radnich, btw, did mention the situation in his opening monologue. I recall him saying something along the lines of .. "Ew.. geez. And that Cal story. Sad. We'll touch on that later, but for now I want to talk Giants" Didn't stick around to listen to his whole show, so I don't know if he did eventually come back and touch on it even briefly, but Giants talk was pretty dominant, and has been the last couple days.

The buzz and excitement over the potential post-season has finally caught on, and anyone at the ballpark the last couple nights would know that. That's reading the room, imo. Is it fair to Cal Sports? Sadly, no. The Cal Sports story may deserve a little more attention, but when has the 'news' ever focused on the stories that deserve more attention?

Radnich's schtick might get tired at times, and there may be aspects of his show that are vom-worthy, but methinks the anger over him not covering the Cal sports story is less about objective criticism and more about personal preference.

  6. I agree with the previous post on just about everything he said - then again I enjoy Gary's program and his shtick.

Also Rich, last time Gary mentioned you on air that I heard he was praising you for the Jim Brown event, saying that if Rich is in charge it will be a fine event (or something along those lines)

By the way the Roxy Bernstein Show with JJ and Geoff Sheen talked about it at length on KTRB 12-3, but sadly I don't think anyone heard but me.
