Oh sure, the Giants are on a roll, but clearly its the SF 49ers who rule the Bay Area's sporting conscious.
Interesting to see two very different storylines play out. While the Giants rolled over the Dodgers and took control of first place in the NL Western division, most of the talk-show chatter on KNBR's various programs has dealt with the 49ers, particularly their abyss in Seattle last Sunday.
Adding to the mix, no doubt, will be Mike Singletary's blowout with CBS5's Dennis O'Donnell.
Make no mistake, the Giants are big news and possess considerable clout with thier media affiliates, (note that the Giants have priority on KNBR's 680 while the Niners are relagated to sister-station 1050 until the end of baseball.)
But the buzz is almost all 49ers-related material.
On KNBR's "Razor and Mr. T" program, Thursday afternoon, most of the calls were about the 49ers with both hosts, Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert making light of the now famous Yahoo article depicting alleged dysfunction in the team's coaching ranks, notably offensive coordinatoor, Jimmy Raye.
There was very little talk about the Giants, despite the Dodgers being in town and the pennant race commotion. Same thing over on Damon Bruce's noon-4 PM show on 1050.
This is not a strictly Bay Area phenomena--the NFL rules in virtually all its markets, (Pittsburgh has always been a Steelers town even when the Pirates were winning) In fact, the NFL's opening-week games were the top-rated TV shows and NBC's Thursday and Sunday night contests drew record numbers.
The 49ers next play Monday Night and the combination of the team's horrid first game, Singletary's michegas with O'Donnell, and the defending champion New Orleans Saints should keep the buzz-meter very high, only it'll be football that rules.
