Renowned author, former Chronicle man-about-town, Gerald Nachman's favorite eats in the city by the bay:
"Of the famous places, it would be Sam's, easily, followed by Westlake Joe's. Sam's is the second old bistro in SF, unchanged in 80 years, with hooks for hats on the wall, crotchety old waiters in tuxes who don't tell you their name and little curtained booths for rendezvous. Of the neighborhood places in West Portal, it would be Cafe for All Seasons on W. Portal Ave. and the little Lakeside Cafe on Ocean Ave. All honest, unpretentious restaurants with no music, relaxed atmosphere and great edible food from menus you don't need Alice Waters to translate."
