Now the hard work begins.
The 49ers and Jed York are quite happy now that they have a positive, a-OK on their new stadium plans for Santa Clara. The voters, (and about $4 million of 49ers money) have spoken.
They even have a new website for their future Southbay home.
Some basic questions:
1. The new stadium will cost upwards of $800-900 million. Santa Clara is contributing about $79 or so million. Let's round out numbers and say about a BILLION bucks, here or there. Where's the money coming from? Just asking.
2. John Madden said on KCBS he's happy the stadium deal got done, but expressed a bit of caution. (See question 1.)
3. Will the Raiders be involved in this project, perhaps to share the stadium and contribute to its financing? (I don't have the foggiest, but I do know the NFL prefers that suggestion, and the math breakdown makes sense for both teams--don't rule it out, trust me)
MEDIA PLAY and ANALYSIS:
The Santa Clara thumbs-up is a huge political victory for the 49ers and stadium backers. Again, the most difficult process now begins. 2014, (when the new stadium is to debut) is almost five years away. Who knows what the state of the world will be like and what state the economy is; (have you ever tried to borrow a billion dollars?)
The sports-talk shows will be gleeful and begin talking about the "49ers new home", etc. Caution: with the exception of those hosts who have a much more broader grasp on this subject, don't take these fellows seriously--they're more booster talk boobs and their perspective and interests should be taken to heart.
Should be an interesting five years.

Rich,
ReplyDeleteI know this is a casual blog, but your one constant punctuation error bugs me every time you make it and distracts from your content.
In American English, a quotation mark generally goes outside the punctuation. For example:
He said, "go."
It is NOT:
He said, "go".
There are special rules for question marks (?) and exclamation points (!), but at least get the periods and commas correct.
Other countries use different conventions, but I suspect that you are not writing for a British audience nor that you were educated in England, for example.
Correction of this small error will add (or at least not detract) from your writing.
Rich, I minored in English in college, and your puncuation "errors" don't bother me; I'm reading the blog for your unique content. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteWould make sense that the 49ers also build a baseball stadium alongside the foots ball stadium. At least it would be warm weather in summer for local baseball.
ReplyDeleteI do know I wish Wolff would do something or shut up and stay.

Rich-Santa Clara's share isn't $79 million!!! Santa Clara and its agencies are responsible for $444 million (47%). See Jed York's June 3, 2009 interview on Comcast Chronicle Live with Greg Papa. He shows a pie chart with $114 million as a direct subsidy from the city and another $330 million from SAnta Clara's agency, the Stadium Authority, which is responsible for owning and operating the stadium plus raising $330 million for stadium construction from high risk sources- selling personal seat licenses and naming rights. The media has over and over reproduced press releases from the 49ers that do not discuss the STaidum Authority's costs, debt, or risks.
