Townsend shines on A's/XTRA post-game show

When XTRA Sports AM 860 added Chris Townsend to the A's post-game radio mix, I was a bit skeptical that the former KNBR tonsil would be his wee-too-giddy, baseball-induced, booster-club glee man.

Wrong.

Townsend is a refreshing, funny, informative and, yes, delightful host who has matured to become a welcome and infinitely competent addition to the A's broadcast team, with a nice bit of folksiness, intellect and just enough energy to compliment the entire Oakland contingent: the great pbp-man, Ken Korach and color analyst Vince Cotroneo.

Townsend knows his element and isn't trying to become something he clearly isn't; he's good at focusing in on the baseball end of things, (it helps too that the A's are playing great and are in first place); Townsend is adept at keeping the pace of post-game calls and isn't afraid to criticize when he has to. In other words, yes, satisfy the fan base, but also be aware of the neutral followers who don't give a hoot about Dallas Braden.

Townsend hosts both the pre and post-game shows; (he replaced the sadly underwhelming Robert Buan) and also does a weeknight, syndicated sports-talk show, (10 PM-1 AM--carried locally by XTRA.)

  1. I'd forgotten about him. Didn't he get paired up with Rod Brooks years ago when Gary's morning show didn't last until noon?

I'm really liking Marty Lurie's extended post game show after the Giants. Today, it was just hours and hours of baseball that went well into the early evening. Marty puts in a full day and it hit the spot for a warm spring afternoon.

What is Larry Kruger up to?

  2. R.R. - I also love the fact that he can go for hours and hours after the game on the weekend and I think KNBR is lucky to have him as the A's lost big time when he jumped ship across the bay. I had the great pleasure of meeting him @ Willie Mays plaza a few weeks ago and he was so nice and just talked about baseball with a group of us for about 15 minutes while the CSN pre-game show was being taped. All and all great guy.

Rich, can we get some love for Marty Lurie ? or does the fact he is on KNBR now prohibit you from doing so... j/k :)

  3. They are lucky to get Marty. He's a treasure. And while it is Giants-centric, I'm sure he'll talk about A's and other teams if people want to. I think I've even heard one or two A's fans call in.

  5. Jeffrey: I'm not "prohibited" from anything--its my site; that fact that Marty is on KNBR is irrelevant.

Marty does a good job and I have said as much.
