Top 10 things to expect at Yankees-A's tonight in Oakland

The Yankees invade Oakland tonight. Call the authorities. Look out for the first-timers' club and also expect these Top 10 things to occur:

#10 Lots of people who've never been to NY dressed up in Yankees gear pretending to be Yankee fans.
#9 Same people trying desperately to possess fake NY accent.
#8 10,000 screeching women under 40 thinking they have half a chance to score Derek Jeter.
#7 At least one drunk fan makes it onto field in 4th inning and gets full-body slammed by 12 OPD officers and Coliseum security.
#6 Larry Ellison shows up and says, "why all the fuss?, I just ate Emeryville."
#5 KNBR makes it annual one-time token appearance in the press box.
#4 Yankees Caps: $30 Beer: $8 Specialty dogs: $7.50, ("Hey honey, do you mind Dennys tomorrow night?")
#3 A-Rod tells local media he's looking forward to having dinner at Lake Merritt Hotel.
#2 Hank Steinbrenner walks around Coliseum and says, "you know, for about another billion, you guys could have my kinda' home."
#1 A's fans consider tactics of Philly slob who vomited over opposing fans in stadium last week

  1. #11-Yankees write off the trip, not just as part of the schedule but as a scouting trip for future talent.

#12-Overheard by the Yankee brass, "Move to Fremont? So you are saying we can now take the San Mateo Bridge to get to our hotel in San Francisco?"

  2. its gone from bad to worse at the Coliseum, the Yankees can't even draw a big crowd there - with the A's playing winning ball and a matchup with NY, only 19,849 decided to show up.

  3. What does the new set up at the Coliseum fill up at? A number of years ago, pre-upper tarp era, we had to sit up in Mt. Davis during Yankees games.

A note to Larry Ellison (yeah, like he is reading this!)-while buying the Warriors, please buy the A's too. Then do the following....

Buy KFRC. Put the A's on that radio station and keep them there so fans know where to tune in. Keep the Good Time Oldies but mix in some sports talk too to build support.

Build a new stadium. The A's in San Jose would be great for them but you have some great history of ball in Oaktown and BART right there. Just build something new in the lot there.

Keep the great farm system and the young players but hold on to some of the big names too. Don't let Yankee money grab them. A blend of young and veteran so the fans can follow these guys for years.

Compete off the field. Don't complain that Giants flagship station don't give you enough pub. The A's station doesn't do the same for the Giants. Follow their lead and get some stability on the radio and promote yourselves. Buy your own mouthpiece and get people talking.

Lock up Ken Korach for life! 20 year contract.

Celebrate your past. The Oakland Oaks had some history before the Yankees picked them clean in the 1950s. 4 Championships. Ricky Henderson. Any player that goes into Cooperstown as an Athletic rather than another team gets a statue built (yeah, I'm looking at you, Reggie!!)

I'm a Giants fans but I like the A's (yes, I'm one of those guys!) There is some huge potential to thrive in the East Bay rather than adapting the Royals model of competing the first week of baseball then waiting for that Yankees revenue sharing check. The A's aren't quite that bad but risk falling into that model. We are starved for winners in the Bay Area but you need to be consistent, not threaten to move, embrace the fans and community, and compete.

    There. Off my soap box.
