No Bay Area media at Miami Super Bowl; sign of the times; a few writers, but no TV/radio

Call it a sad sign of the times.

There is not one media outlet at the Super Bowl in Miami. No radio, no local TV, (that I know of); the SF Chronicle is sending David White and the BANG papers, (SJ Merc, Oak Trib, Contra Costa Times, et al) will have a few writers, but overall, the Bay Area's media contingent in South Florida will largely be devoid.

As in most cases, the bottom line is at the heart of the matter. As the recession still takes its toll on local media, (and other markets) sending radio crews and assorted production people to Super Bowls is simply out of the question. yes, again, its all about the benjamins.

Granted, Indy--New Orleans, as great a national story and game as that figures to be, locally, the concept of spending huge dollars to have a presence at the game is simply not worthy.

Even the so-called "sports leader", KNBR, hasn't send one of its zany sports tonsil shows to radio row at the big game.

  1. unrelated Rich but what are your thoughts about Marty Lurie now doing Giants pre/post on KNBR. Did the A's not want to pay him anymore or was that a KTRB thing ?

  2. My best guess was that is was a combination of both; I have a sense, either way, that mankind will survive.

  3. The KNBR morning show boys did make mention about not being there, but the phone-in with Dwight Clark and Super Joe was as good as them being there.
