Costas and McGwire on MLB-TV: pompous pie affair
Is it just me or does Bob Costas think he's saving the world? Really.
Its just as well that Costas got the first Mark McGwire, yes, I took 'roids interview; both deserved each other.
I actually listened to the interview on radio and later on, forced myself to watch. At times, I wanted to be like that guy in Cleveland in the 70's who threw bricks at his TV when Howard Cosell was on Monday Night Football. I mean, the pomposity was that engrossing.
Truly, the whole McGwire/Bonds/Canseco/BALCO industry story has never moved me. Doesn't mean I don't care, but frankly, none of the players in this show are remotely likable other than hitting baseballs and whether or not they screwed up their bods, cheated, cheated on their spouses, lied before grand juries; no, there's nothing there there, sorry boys and girls, but I believe many other folks are in the same boat. They still pack the parks, cheer for the home run and buy the 12$ beers. They're believers, the fans, perhaps even enablers, who knows and frankly, who cares.
Given that, and the fact that most baseball players have nothing to say, leave me immune to all the ruckus over McGwire's timed mea culpa. And combined with Costas visual arrogance, you'd have thunk he was talking to Jesus Christ.
Costas is good and knows everything about sports, particularly baseball, which reportedly he views as a sort of national shrine. Good for Bob, who's managed to make a pretty good career out of it, sort of sports version of Ted Koppel, only Koppel knows how to read the room better.
Costas gives the appearance he wants you to know how smart he is and everything else is secondary. The McGwire interview was proof positive. Given that Big Mac's confession was the story of the day, Costas had to know that his semi cross-examination would elicit headlines. Too bad it ended up like almost everyone expected.
McGwire did the tears-for-fears thing. Would have been great for Costas to ask him point blank why all the crying game? Mark, you're emotional now, why'd it take so long for you to come out? Was it because Tony LaRussa recently hired you as his batting coach? Is it your Hall of Fame status? The latter, Costas alluded to, and McGwire gave the safe answer, which Bobby boy didn't follow up on. Naturally.
The whole interview was pointless and predictable. McGwire lied and lied and probably did himself a big disservice; KNBR's Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert were dead on in their dismissal of the whole charade; McGwire's drama show and Costas' MLB-TV pomposity, gawd, I needed a good turkey sandwich afterward and I got one.
