More KRON 8PM Newscast Info; Why is Pero Such a Schmuck?; Dave Clark; Tori Campbell; Radnich/KRON Sports Show; KNBR and USA Hockey; TGIF Friday Notes and SF Media Round-Up

 I didn't say the KRON 8PM newscast was the CBS Evening News but I like its straightforward approach and non-gimmicky delivery.

Part of that tone is due to KRON's lack of tools, graphics, and heady reporters, but the show, as bare bones as it is, actually works and is solid enough if you're looking for a simple, concise and snappy hour of news.

Pam Moore is rock-solid and keeps the pace moving. At times, she gives the appearance of moving too fast, but that's acknowledging "I'm at KRON, still, for gods sake", but so what, it works and it works well. Simplicity can be the greatest virtue. Sharp graphics and pictures of the Embarcadero don't necessarily make for a quality newscast, after all, it's news we want.

**More KRON cookies: I'm wondering why Aaron Pero is such a disliked schmuck --I mean, I know why based on reports of numerous assholeish acts of repeated yelling and screaming, berating reporters and making some literally cry. So I asked a popular Kronvict how does Pero get away with it? The person didn't give me a direct answer and was somewhat dismissive so I assume there's a rubic's cube of info on this whole story. Kronvicts working and non-working johns and joans, I'm assuming. have stories to tell.

**I would hope that KGO Radio sports anchor, Rich Walcoff and his nearly 30 years at the station would have given him some protection and cover to have to be IN THE MAN CAVE! with schmucky Brian Sussman over at KSFO but I forgot it's all about the whole big happy family that is Cumulus....By the way, yo, Suss, the traffic chick is more annoying and yappy by the day. Maybe she could be outsourced permanently to The Bone and talk about meat loaf.

NOTES: The "At the End of the Day" cliché that has gone national has now been officially dethroned by the god-awful, "is going viral"--Christ!, can not one of the schmuckos just say such and such person/video/event is generating traction, has become extremely popular? I guess that would require basic common sense, which has not gone viral...No matter how much he wants to spin it, Radnich's sports show has been canned from KRON and a lot of that probably due to, A., lack of viewers, but B. and probably more accurately, ex-GM, Brian Greif's departure--it was Greif that pitched the project and when Greif split for health issues, the sports show effectively went with it...Over at the Chronicle, they, the reporters, (mostly), are bitching again, quietly--seems the new gal pal big shot is not exactly a hit in the newsroom...KNTV weatherman, Rob Mayeda: nice guy, good presentation and that's always nice...I could listen to KCBS' political analyst, Mark Sandalow for about an hour but that's just me...Tara Moriarty may not be a hit in the bowels of KTVU but I like her and that's all that counts...Frank Mallicoat over at PIX: initial impression: overrated. Actual impression: underrated and good guy too. Our very own Boston Red Sox: Mallicoat and KRON's Justine Waldman, still pursued by CNN, but I thinks she's happy in the Bay Area...KNBR was to pick up the USA hockey match in Sochi Friday but instead had to cut to a new program, "Hooked on Tacos"...Steve Bitker: Your annoying "he was 12 of 20, field" would be supremely better if you could just say, "he was 12 of 20 from the field." English language is a great commodity but it too has not gone viral...Just my opinion, I doubt Tom Tolbert takes over for Jim Barnett in the Warriors TV broadcast booth. I have no scientific proof, just a hunch...When Radnich on radio conducts an interview, he's still got it. The Jerry Lewis Raddy, meh...I again tried to listen to "Sarah and Vinnie" and got bored again. And yes, Sarah and Vinnie are feuding. One makes more money than the other, I'm guessing that could be the reason, or at least 99% of the reason...KFOG, 2014: Only the casket is missing...Darya Folsom, about $150G a year, millions by KRON standards, but she wants more money--good luck with that, ask Pero...Joe Fonzi and Fred Inglis: KTVU sports weekend warriors who think they're God's gift to the world. Not, Ditto the blond chickie host of KQED's insufferable, "Check Please", Ya know, the avocado salad was resplendent and the goat cheese dip was simply Amazing!---Oh, STFU!...KNBR picked up the USA Olympics hockey match on Friday but had to cut at the last minute to the new program, "Kate Scott Sorority Moments", which is going viral..."Breaking News" anus awards: KTVU, #1 followed closely by PIX and KGO...How sad: KTVU MO2 frequent Facebook references--"likes?" I'd prefer the fake Breaking News and Clark's scowl. OK, I'm done. Have a nice weekend and see you at the Emeryville Denny's!

Bay Area Media Notes; Byrnes Front-Runner as SP host; Young Snubs 'Razor&Mr. T'; Jobs/Apple Get More Free Pub

*Eric Byrnes is the front-runner for the KNBR "Sportsphone" host, (7-10PM) vacated by FP Santangelo, who has taken a job as color analyst for the Washington Nationals.

One other candidate who might be considered: Damon Bruce. Although I'd doubt Larry Baer would ok that, and Bruce seems to have settled in quite nicely at 1050 during the day.

*Speaking of Knibber, Steve Young, ex-Niner and current ESPN football analyst, who does a weekly twenty-minute show on "The Razor and Mr. T", (Ralph Barbieri and Tom Tolbert,) mysteriously missed the show on Wednesday.

Tolbert stated on the air that "Steve Young has 'defered' to appear on the air until tomorrow." To which Barbieri retorted, "Maybe he was listening to the radio show." Maybe Barbieri was right.

*Apple and its peripatetic CEO/co-fer, Steve Jobs got another ton of free pub this week from national and local media outlets. Jobs took another mysterious medical leave and speculation has already begun in earnest in the tabloids and beyond.

*I didn't know KUSF was that important--KFOX too. Now KDFC? Enough shock waves to jolt the Volvo crowd here.

Savage honesty; KNBR ignores Oakland sports; Niners stadium coverage; Bay Area media notes

*People ask me why I have "sucked" up to Michael Savage. Real simple, you may hate him and cringe at what he says, but he generally speaks the truth, or at least says some things that make total sense and nobody in this market has the courage to say, too busy worrying about pissing off the mainstream bosses who have zero pulse on  just what the hell is going on. At least Savage tells it like it is and whether you agree or disagree, you LISTEN.

And by the way, Savage didn't pay me a penny to say this, so if you dare 'go there, you ain't got nothing, but feel free to check. Please, go ahead, make my day.

**It dawned on my Monday night sitting in the Coliseum press box watching the A's-LA Angels, that no one from Knibber was to be seen. As irrelevant as knibber is, it would be nice if the so-called "sports leader" send one of their various enablers to cross the bridge and "report" on the A's, but that isn't on their ledger--Knibber only covers the Giants, Warriors and 49ers--the Raiders and A's are rumors on their playlist, which has now been reduced to Blood, sweat and tears, KC and the Sunshine Band, and a little Disco duck in between.

**Here's your 49ers/Santa Clara stadium election "coverage" Tuesday night in a nutshell: the assembled dim-witted masses with cameras will automatically conclude that if the stadium proposal is passed, (and it probably will) then, "oh boy, 'Niners have their new stadium and are headed to Santa Clara"; well sorry, but reality bites...the truth is, a ballot passage merely allows the franchise to move ahead with their "plans", those pesky little things, like financing about a BILLION bucks, dealing with the Great America people, land issues, infrastructure, those little ditties? So while you see the inane, dummy reporter acting gleeful with all the other gleeful 49ers celebrating in some Santa Clara hotel, keep in mind the hard work still lies ahead.

**KGO/KSFO Dick Morris deal: I mentioned on Monday that Dick Morris did the KSFO morning show, THEN followed an hour later on Ronn Owens' KGO show, which is not the usual formula with guest exclusivity on KGO...suffice to say, many a peeps were vastly pissed off to the max and a whole slew of meetings took place at 900 Front, and no, they weren't eating doughnuts, I'm told.

**The Helen Thomas story was largely ignored in the Bay Area press; albeit it did receive heavy play on the KGO talk-radio circuit. Curiously, only a wire-service story on SFGate was their responce; SF Appeal ignored it, ditto Internet counterpart SFist.com, too busy I guess showing their latest "Meanwhile, in Berkeley" picture or the latest wacky photo of the day. (No wonder they were just sold and are about to be outsourced--oops, take that "Mr. 2.0.)

**Hey, enough of the usuage of "Timmy" Lincecum--its TIM for gawds sake, not because he's been sucking lately, its just that "Timmy" is a 13 year-old student at elementary school--TIM is a pitcher with the SF Giants, got that, pencilheads?

Time to eat an omellete and drink more coffee.

April trends; 'this and that Friday pulse; Bay Area media notes

**April radio ratings--415 MEDIA NOTES

KCBS is solidly #1 across the board; yes, of course it helps to have an FM presence, (106.9);I'm sure KGO would love to have an FM outlet, (in the 80's, there was KGO-FM, which once was KSFX, where Rosie Allen worked with the late, great Stephen Kapen)

Give KCBS credit; they have stuck to their 'meat and potatoes: news 24/7, with lots of traffic updates, but the "15-45", traffic/weather, and morning dominance, (Stan Bunger--Susan Leigh-Taylor, John Madden, etc) definitely is an AM staple for commuters in cars that don't listen to satellite.

As expected, KNBR picked up the pace with help from Giants baseball; KOIT was KOIT, and KGO held serve, as did KQED-FM.

People ask me about KGO and I tell them I keep hearing all sorts of things; Ronn Owens is suddenly getting a ton of rips, but he's still at the top of his game. He's still making money for the company and getting all the good guests, so don't ride him out just yet, (although Ronn, please, enough of the theme bumpers coming out of spots--its cute to a point, but it loses its edge when its become too cutesy...plus, does EVERY guest have to read the Sleeptrain spot?)...

THIS AND THAT: Quite a stir at the local Emmys the other night; seems someone; a "star" had one "helluva time", (apparently the skirt was extra short)...Please, please, I know I've said this before, but it bears repeating: quickly 86 the "800 kars-for-kids" jingle for humanity sake, (not against cars for kids, but THAT spot is for the garbage bin)...KSFO morning "dude" Brian Sussman repeats this about 321x: "You, sir, (fill-in guest) are a "Great American"...and after sound bite4, "he's a 'great American" and seconds later, "YOU are a GREAT AMERICAN'--evidently, Sussman has a copyright on "Great American"...Does anybody know what the hell happened to FM radio? Oh, I know its become irrelevant and satellite radio is the mantra, but still, other than a few KQED's here, an 80's-lite, KFOG there, and KDFC and KCSM, I can't make out anything--they all sound the same; ok, I forgot, "Alice, 97.3 with heavy Tom Petty...Speaking of KCSM, I can only keep asking, how do they keep this little treasure going?...Oh, hey, yeah, I know about interns doing updates on KNBR. That's old news. Sort of like the Cumulus philosophy: if its cheap, we can deal with it...Another "yes-I know" dept.--KTVU has been using revolving anchors with its Noon news, (Sports anchor Mark Ibanez hosted and shined in Jan--Rita Williams too; its a part of the new reality in local TV news; they have 'utility infielders who DH'--its the new business model--get used to it...Speaking of KTVU; they still dominate the market and make lots of money for Cox; how much? Try in the mid $40 million range; p.s: someone who  would know told me once about five years ago that the "10 o' clock News" alone accounted for 1% of the gross earnings for Cox Broadcasting, (that's powerful)...Got an e-mail from Malou Nubla who does the "sell" show on Channel 2; yeah, I know its a part of "DA business"; Ms. Nubla was cool enough to say she reads this crap, so I owe her lunch at Tommys Joynt...BREAKING NEWS: Steve Moskowitz is considering calling EVERY morning, noon, and evening radio show in EVERY market in US; alert authorities...Yes, I rip, but I can praise too: Mychal Urban is very good on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, or at least way better than he is on radio; sorry Mikey, but the schmaltzy "unicorn hour" and assorted other knibber isms you spiel forth are not my cup of coffee, but that's just me...Another pain in the royal tuchas: the use of the phrase: "at the end of the day"--oh, hell, get a damn life! ..Another beauty: "For the 900th time...blah-blah-blah, (don't get me started)...Psst, between you and me, THAT GUY, Mr 9-Nooner? He keeps saying the SAME stuff day after day after day, I mean, he thinks I have no life--he should look in the mirror after he's done talking about how if you have 'kids and your father and mother took care of you in life'-blah, blah, blah, (meanwhile he still occasionally mentions sports every now and then when he's not rating the ta-ta's of various female rappers)...I was just thinking, actually wishing what would Herb Caen think about the state of the world these days? Could you imagine the lines Caen would pen on "American Idol" alone?...Tony Bruno had me howling a bit on Thursday with his bit with Radnich on knibber. Bruno cell-phoned on his way to LAX and continued on through the terminal area on to his SWA airplane about to "get down" on his way to Scottsdale. Bruno either intentionally or unintentionally left his cell open when he made it to the plane and was heard uttering a few choice things--yeah, it was funny...PS Emmys: Comcast SportsNet Bay Area took home eight Emmys and Wayne Freedman got his usual multiples...Is it just me or do you too frankly don't give a damn anymore about the Bay to Breakers? Used to be fun to watch and now has been relegated to "who gives a -shit" dept;...FINALLY: Tips and e-mails are warmly encouraged here.
