Has Rush Limbaugh Jumped The Shark? Question For The Fan Base; Tuesday Starter

I want to talk to those of you that are Rush Limbaugh fans. You are out there, right? Rush is still the king of the world and undisputed #1-rated talk-show host, I'm pretty sure, but the past few years his popularity has waned. This is not the gospel, just my own impression and I read and explore a lot of this type of thing. He still commands a lot of attention in the so-called flyover states but even there his Rushness fervor seems to have evaporated. Again, not the gospel just an impression. And past controversy confirms this.

Limbaugh used to be worth listening to, (and still is, for the most part), because of the entertainment quotient in his program. I'm negating the overt rightist political leanings and GOP bastion that defines him because that's a given. Rush will always be Rush but even his most liberal critics agree, or at one  point agreed that Limbaugh's program was popular because the guy was a complete broadcaster, possessed quite a brilliant vocabulary, offered funny and snarky asides, (Philthydelphia) and knew how to move the needle, as they say in broadcasting.

Or am I missing the beat now? Which brings me back the point of this article. Who listens to Limabugh? I already know about the loyal Republican minions who still view him as the GOP messiah and he continues to garner considerable clout within that base but I'm speaking of the general public. There was a time that even those people who didn't buy Limbaugh's politics and cast him aside as nothing more than a GOP talking head still listened intently because he was interesting and provocative. Matter of fact Limbaugh used to be a daily presence in the news domain, at the top of the masthead but I don't see that these days. It's not overly-dramatic nor earth-shattering but still relevant.

A few years ago Michael Zwerling, who owns KSCO Radio in Santa Cruz and whose station carries Rush was seriously considering dropping the program but relented. He agrees with my assessment that the Limbaugh portfolio is still in the heavyweight division although greatly diminished. Even with that Zwerling said renewing El Rushbo was a no-brainer.

"We've had many interesting, very lively and contentious talk shows and even run polls on the subject, 'Would KSCO be better off with Rush or without Rush?'", offered Zwerling.

"Thus far we opted to keep Rush, even with the advertiser stigma because after all is said and done, Rush Limbaugh continues to bring in the mega-audience that tends to stick around for our other programs -- he still brings in the enormous audience and enormous audiences are what enable advertising-revenue-based businesses survive and thrive."

What about you out there--and again, I'm looking for Limbaugh fans, do you still listen with urgency or has the star diminished. Is he no longer 'appointment radio? I'd like to know.

10 Ways To Be a Legitimate Right-Wing Talk-Radio Host

 1. Repeated use of the word, "patriot."

2. Tell every second caller "you're a great American."

3. Inform your base we're in a "tyranny" every 10 minutes.

4. Of course that Obama guy is a "socialist."

5. After repeated socialist mentions, go to the really, really, bread and butter, "communist."

6. When the press is against you, get the sharpie out and have this ready for standby: "MAIN-STREAM MEDIA."

7. Be immersed with the word: "Liberal."

8. Invoke the name, "Ronald Reagan"every show, (even though by today's GOP standards, Ronald Reagan would be a liberal).

9. At the end of your program, give a brave salute to, "OUR Great Armed Forces!--the Army, the Navy, Marines, the Air Force and the Coast Guard." A little Ray Charles "America" underneath helps too.

10. Say "lefties" a lot. It inspires confidence and emphasizes you really mean what you say.

415 Media: Savage being positioned to challenge Rush Limbaugh; Would take 9-Noon slot on KSFO, (But does he want it?)

BULLET POINT--

Cumulus, and most importantly, CEO, Lew Dickey, are positioning Michael Savage to go head-to-head with Rush Limbaugh.

Locally, here in SF, start pondering the idea of Savage versus Rush from 9-Noon on KSFO--would take over the slot being currently held by Mike Hucabee who is all but done--he's  never moved the needle.

It had been widely assumed that they would keep Huckabee at noon and possibly put Savage back in PM Drive against Hannity when the big WABC/WOR shakeup happens.  I know Dickey would love the occasion to dump El Rushboo, (Savage has more listeners and better ratings)-- Dickey is stepping up his attacks on Rush, (which is the main reason behind Rush's OTD status).

 BULLET POINTS--

** Dickeys have to be aware that although Savage moves the needle and would make a formidable competitor against Rush, his show is something of an albatross with advertisers, (as with Rush too, but Rush still carries considerable influence and advertisers).

**Would Savage want to go up against Limbaugh? He's talked many times about being the top dog of the radio broadcasting world but would he want to work in the morning? I e-mailed Savage for a comment and hope to hear back, (don't hold your breath).

*Either way, these things are clear: Savage, for better worse is Cumulus' anchor national host. It could be toxic, (on both sides), given Savage's notorious mood swings and personality. ...Rush is all but gone and Lew Dickey has been wooing Savage. In fact, Savage and the Dickeys had dinner last Tuesday night at the North Beach Restaurant in San Francisco. They were not discussing the prosciutto and melon, either.

MORE TO COME, STAND BY---

Dickey isn't happy with KGO Radio, (he told an industry trade essentially he's still not happy with the 810 AM albatross. No shit, Sterling.

Super Radio Juggernaut: Savage might be Cumulus King as El Rushbo and Lew Dickey Bicker

Could San Francisco-based national talker, Michael Savage, be Cumulus' star tonsil?

With Rush Limbaugh and Cumulus bigwig, Lew Dickey, bickering, Savage, whose ratings have shot through the roof and who dominates SF and NY national talk radio, (and who just received a huge legal victory), might become Cumulus' main content provider.

There's a lot of the table.
