The optics on Obama giving Iran pallets of money looks bad, but it was their money, so it's important to provide the proper context. In the 70s, Iran was an ally nation of the US, and President Ford(R) agreed to the $400M arms deal with Iran. The US collected the $400M but never delivered the arms, so Obama simply returned the $400M to Iran, along with the decades of accumulated interest.

Iran has billions of frozen assets all around the world due to sanctions. The $1.7B they got from the US were not part of the sanctions. The money was theirs. Sooner or later, that money would need to be returned. Do you honestly believe they could not carry out nefarious acts without the $1.7B? You don't know Iran very well if you believe that.
