I appreciate your passion and expectations of the press conference, but I thought the press conference was just to introduce and welcome Devers. I didn't expect the hard probing questions until Friday, when Devers plays his former team. Coming from a non-Giants fan, I thought Buster pulled off a brilliant trade. I felt like he ceased the opportunity, maybe not entirely due to team need, but to get ahead of other teams who were targeting the same player.
11:54AM, you meant he seized the opportunity but I think you got it right in more like “ceased the opportunity” to get several talented hitters instead of one costing the bank. Devers can apparently hit a decent amount of home runs (15 so far in 2025). However, Google Dodgers’ 2025 home run leaders and then the Giants. Brian Murphy acted like Devers was the next Barry Bonds in the presser he was invited to. Murph the big shot KNBR host in his own mind was sucking up already with multiple ingratiating questions . Dodgers still will come in 3rd behind the Padres most likely. Giants’ fans lack the concept of reality in their fandom for many years now. I knew when to bail.
@5:21 yep, I meant "seize," but I guess "cease" applies here too. Devers is a career .279 hitter with 38, 27, 33, and 28 HRs the past 4 seasons, so it's exactly what the Giants need in terms of offense. The Giants fandom is definitely on the fair-weather side, but they still have a decent turnout every year. The Dodgers rotation is weak, but it was weaker last year, and they won it all. That's the beauty of baseball - things could look great on paper, but look entirely different on the field.
The Giants can only get players that they over pay to play in SF. They took on the whole contract for a player without a position and celebrate it. The Giants are not even close to real contenders.
Not a Giants fan here, but I'd have to disagree on this one particular trade. Getting Devers not only improves the Giants, but it also keeps him away from contenders like the Dodgers and Mets. Devers doesn't have a position now, but he could DH the rest of the season, then work on improving his 1B skills during Spring Training. It's not a big issue.
The Giants (and local media) act like Devers is the 2nd coming of Barry Bonds on steroids. Have to wait a few years to see how this plays out with the young players the Giants traded. Anyone remember when the Giants traded Zach Wheeler for Carlos Beltran?
Yes, he was a rental, but something good came out it. 2012. The Giants since then, have not traded away young prospective pitching talent since that trade. We can always look back. Deion Sanders, Sidney Ponson, etc. Time will tell. Looking forward to Wisenhunt and other talent we have in Sacramento.

DeleteWhat did you expect from the presser? Where was Damon Bruce? Cris Townsend? Darya? Marti Laurie? Steven Langford? Where were the "real" reporters?
ReplyDeleteTownsend works for the A's, so he would be nowhere close to Oracle Park.
