Cracks in the Morning Surface at KTVU

9 comments:

  1. KTVU’s morning dominance isn’t about superior programming—it’s a result of scheduling convenience and ingrained viewer habits. Their success rides entirely on the momentum of their 10 PM news, which has long been a staple. Before streaming platforms like YouTube TV, Roku, and Hulu, viewers relied on traditional TVs. They’d watch KTVU at 10 PM, turn the TV off, and in the morning, it would still be set to “Mornings on 2.” Over time, this became less about choice and more about habit—a habit formed by circumstance, not by content.

    1. What a load of shit. People know how to turn the channel. I don't buy for a second that people watch ktvu in the mornings only because they happened to watch it the night before and are too lazy to turn the station.

    3. As someone who grew up in Oakland, KTVU was the hometown station so channel 2 was the default station.

    4. 2 is also the first channel on the "dial" that has helped KTVU immensely over the years. You turn it on, it's just there and you have to make an effort to move past it. Never underestimate the power of lazy.

  2. While I agree with @1:44, there's another key reason KTVU dominates the ratings: for much of the morning, and certainly during 'prime time,' they’re the only local show on. While national programs like Good Morning America, The Today Show, and CBS Mornings are airing, KTVU offers local programming. Yes, the stories are repetitive, the anchors are incompetent, and the overall 'quality' of the stories and newscast is practically nonexistent, yet, for many viewers, the local angle is enough to keep them tuned in.
