Soto isn't worth $1B, but the Giants will have to overpay significantly to get him in a Giants uniform. But the last great free agent they signed was Barry Bonds over three decades ago, so don't count on Soto signing with the Giants.
I think Buster is focused on SS. Ha Seong Kim from the Padres. His close ties with past manager Bob Melvin and friendship with J.H.Lee. They are swimming in outfielders right now.Soto would be nice but I just don't see it. They need to replace Snell as he is not coming back. The Giants extended an offer to Correia and Judge. Look how those panned out? Judge turned into post season A-Rod. The Chapman signing is the lure, the enticement to draw attractive FA's. Management got burned by "huffing the glue of woke DEI bullshit' and is attempting to right the ship. They are not alone. Attendance has suffered and the paying public is even more prudent with discretionary income in this inflated economy. Time will tell. Oh, Yes. Soto couldn't wear #22 if he wanted to. The Giants retired Will Clark's jersey (deservedly so) in 2022.
Honestly, I can't name one single mega-deal that has worked out. Not Pujols, not Miggy, not Trout. I think a better strategy is to offer a player a shorter term deal, but at a higher AAV. So if the Giants really wanted to go after Soto, I'd offer him 4 years at $75M per year.
Agreed! Money better spent elsewhere if you ask me. Fill the voids and continue farm development. Your request is reasonable, but the absurdity of these contracts has to be reigned in.
@3:45 “huffing the glue of woke dei bullshit”? Puh-leeze. Charles Johnson that bastion of billionaire sensibilities, who supported nutcases Boebert and MTG and Cornyn and Tuberville was never in the dei camp, and neither were the giants. As far as I know, they played to their clients - if that’s called woke bullshit, so is knowing who butters your bread. Remember this isn’t for fun, entertainment, social change, its sole purpose is to make money. Charles Johnson does not give a rats ass about your feelings, ALL HE WANTS is your money. And believe me, you will pay more in taxes next year than the billionaire bros.
12:27. Sorry. Ohtani? Nobody is worth 1B. Harper is in year 6 of a 13yr-$330M contract with the Phillies. He wants an extension, believing he "can still be productive in his 40's. Yeah, right. Greedy MF'ers.
@12:27 Harper is halfway through his deal. So far, his deal has worked out ok, but in comparison both Pujols and Cabrera's mega-deal looked fine halfway through the deal. It's the second half of the deal where both players limped to the finish, both literally and figuratively. Ohtani has nine years left on his deal so it's way way way too early to evaluate that deal. Personally, I'm pulling for him to shine throughout the length of his contract, but it's just too early to say either way.
No major star, including Juan Soto, will sign with San Francisco—not because of any issues with the city itself, but for two key reasons: (1) the Giants are not currently positioned to win championships, and top free agents generally want to join contenders; (2) Oracle Park is a pitcher's haven. With its large dimensions and bay-side climate, the park favors pitchers, not power hitters. If you're a slugger, Oracle Park is the last place you'd want to play, unless you’re okay with seeing your stats plummet. These are the reasons why, despite the humongous contract offers, neither Aaron Judge nor Shohei Ohtani chose to come here.
Baseball is strange in that every team has different dimension / configuration stadiums, some indoor. Colorado should have an indoor pressurized stadium to cancel the mile high effect on the ball and the Giants need to bring in the walls for hitters to want to come them. Can you imagine other sports with different size fields or courts? Seems unfair to compare a hitter’s stats especially for HRs whose home field is SF versus Colorado. Major League Baseball needs to get some standards. Old baseball farts will say that each park’s uniqueness is nostalgic I suppose.
The Giants won titles in '10, '12, and '14 with great pitching and that's what they should be targeting this offseason. Go get two starting pitchers like Burnes and Flaherty and they'll have a shot at a wildcard spot.
Top starting pitchers don't want to be in SF either. Blake Snell signed last year out of desperation and had an opt-out after the first season. As soon as the season ended, he opted-out right away. And now he's a Dodger and signed for five years with no opt-outs, meaning he's committed to the Dodgers, while he really didn't want to be a Giant.
Lets be real: Giants did NOT GET Judge or Ohtani. They still would have finished 4th IF they signed either. They do not hit, their pitching is undependable, and these geniuses make a lot of bonehead errors. As one pitcher shouted after yet another ball fell untouched, “just catch the fucking ball !!” The Giants are years from contending, with LA, SD, AZ already light years ahead. Baer is toast. I doubt we will ever hear from him again. His fake optimism eventually bit him in the ass.
Time and competition passed both the Giants and Niners. It was inevitable. But when you charge steak prices for hamburger you either change it up or just burn your fan base as Fisher and the A’s did so egregiously. Mediocrity, it is what’s for the next 5 years. At least. But we have it better than Vegas Traitors - another Jamarcus is in their future
Before I gave a billion dollars to one player, I would sign whoever is considered the best scout in baseball - then I could have a bunch of good players. The Giants currently have one of the worst farm systems in baseball in terms of talent. Fan Graphs has them ranked 28th out of 30 teams and Bleacher Report has them ranked dead last.
@8:37 Bravo !! Scouts with an eye for talent is what is required. I hate the lowly fucking dodgers but i gotta commend them for digging up talent year in a year out. How do they do it? Giants have the same self absorbed putzes year after year and they seem incapable of finding talent that’ll be around awhile. Sabean was the only guy who had an eye for greatness.
Yup, Posey should find replacements for the current incompetent scouts, replace the minor league coaches and managers too, and convince Johnson to fire Baer who has no clue regarding managing staff such as the announcers. Baer’s weird buddy connection to KNBR’s Murphy wreaks of scratching backs but maybe Posey likes Murph kissing his ass too. Posey needs to give Melvin a short leash. All this player’s coach is bs; just win baby as the late great Al Davis would say or take a hike. The Giants may still stink though.
The Braves have the right formula. Not only do they scout good players domestically, but internationally too, then they lock them into long-term contracts at reasonable salaries - Ronald Acuna is only paid $17M per year.
@5:31 “the Braves pay him only $17 million per year” I think I am going to puke. I am all for paying athletes, but when athletes are getting paid ONLY $17 million, I need to stop paying attention to that sport.
Yeah, I know. $17M is a lot of money for most people. In the baseball world, an average player could get $10M-plus. Acuna is a top-10 player with comps in the neighborhood of $30M to $40M, so $17M is a steal.
Just did a quick search of the average/highest salary per year for the four major sports. MLB: $4.98M/$70M NBA: $10M/$55.76M NFL: $2.7M/$60M NHL: $3.6M/$13.25M
My favorite part of the article. "What happened next was all too predictable: Snell was rushed through a spring training, got hurt, the Giants fell out of contention – and Snell had one of the greatest second halves for a starting pitcher in decades, just in time to hit the market again." Huh? The SOB wasn't physically ready. This I blame on the Giants. Sitting on your ass and waiting for the phone to ring and his pimp Boras did just what he is paid for. I could really give a shit these days. I have a passive interest now and enjoy watching "good fundamental baseball". It's amazing how many of these overpaid idiots can't even lay down a bunt. The interest in the sport is waning. Call it the prescient view from the stands. Just a fan of the sport and not the transient wearers of the laundry with suitcase in hand.
@5:38 The interest in the sport waned consistently for about a decade, but with the recent rule changes, interest in the sport has surged the last two seasons.
But yes, I too enjoy good fundamental baseball and miss the days of strategic baseball. Now it's all about spin rate and grip it and rip it.

ReplyDelete@3:42 The last great free agent the Giants signed was Jeff Kent, who came after Bonds.
DeleteSF is where great hitter stats come to die, unless you're roided-up like Barry Bonds.
DeleteYeah. Never mind the 688 intentional walks, which is an MLB record. Erase those with live at-bats and I assure you the stats would look different.
Delete@11:51 Jeff Kent was not a free agent when he joined the Giants. He was traded from Cleveland to SF.

Delete12:05. It is.Only in Fenway can the right fielder lean on the fence ( 3ft.high) and chat with a fan eye to eye.
