Renel Brooks-Moon Fallout: It's All About the Money; SF Giants PR Nightm...

80 comments:

  1. Yeah, the Renel news is terrible news. It won't be the same at the ballpark for the time being without her there.

The Giants are starting to become an embarrassing organization. They don't read the room well anymore.

    1. In an off-season full of controversy, don't forget the Giants did not bring back fan favorite Brandon Crawford. Instead, they signed Nick Ahmed, who's essentially the same player as Brandon Crawford......SMH.

    2. Aenel got put in her place real quick. Don Lemon 2.0.

    3. Add the JD Davis release to the list of '23 embarrassing moments, and the season hasn't even started yet.

    4. If Brandon Crawford had hurt feelings over this and it appears that he did, he failed where most athletes do. 1. Inability to read the room.2. Overestimated his value as his on field performance was in steady decline. 3. The Giants organization has no obligation to retain a depreciating asset which had contractually been paid quite handsomely during his tenure as a Giant. See Buster Posey. That is how it is done.

      Delete
    5. 5:39, it makes a lot of sense if Crawford was being replaced by a better player, but he was replaced by a player who was released last year.

    6. The Giants were anticipating Luciano to be the heir apparent. It hasn't worked out this spring and Ahmed is taking the reigns and having a solid spring. Ahmed has more upside (better offense).

    7. This is such a joke. Renel has an inflated idea of her worth to the organization. Fans don't come to the ballpark to listen to
her. Does Renel increase ticket sales? Will season ticket holders cancel their seats because she is leaving? How does
this move make the Giants an embarassing organization?
      Ridiculous post.....

    8. @8:29- Embarrassing as far as how the Crawford situation ended, and then the JD Davis situation, and now the Renel situation. The Giants don't handle things well or with class anymore, and don't read the room well.

To answer your questions, the answer in a way is simply, yes. A lot of people were hurt by this decision. I get it, Renel wasn't the sole reason people came to the ballpark, but she was such an intricate part of the ballpark experience at a Giants game. When you think of Oracle Park, Renel was one of the first people you thought about. The Giants are taking a big risk getting rid of that. Also, as Rich said in his video, Renel is so much more than just a PA announcer, especially given her work with the Junior Giants, and other Giants related charities and Giants community related events in which she was basically a Giants representative for. She helped take LaMonte Wade Jr under her wing when he came to the Giants back in 2021 to help him feel comfortable being in the Bay and being on the Giants... How do you replace that? Renel will be missed, even if she will still be at the ballpark from time to time.

    9. First of all, Crawford needed to go. His skills, especially defensively (his forte), had declined measurably last year.
They gave him a great send-off. If he stayed, there's a good chance that he would have been released by his hometown
team during the season. My prediction is that he will NOT
make it through a full season with the Cardinals.
Secondly, it was Renel that didn't read the room -- probably
because PA announcers don't even get in the room where important decisions are made. If she was allowed in there,
the last thing she should do is poke the bear. Say whatever
you like about Charles Johnson's beliefs, but this is a free country. He can support whomever or whatever he chooses.
Commenting on that publically when you are easily replaceable
and he is the owner is the definition of not reading the room.

  2. With baseball seeming to be a dying sport nationally and maybe locally, the Giants may be cutting their own throats

    1. MLB baseball saw a 9% increase in attendance in '23, so it's far from being a dying sport. The Giants fans are wine/ cheese frontrunners, so when the team is boring and they aren't winning, the birds outnumber the fans.

  3. If you're more upset about a PA announcer rather than the awful team on the field, you're focused on wrong thing.

It's also time for Kruk and Kuip to call it a day. If you're health is so bad that you can't travel anywhere, hang it up. They had a great run but know when to say when.

  4. Sorry, Renel was fine, but it is not why I go to the baseball game and I am okay with her not being there. I found her to be egotisical and replaceable.

    1. Beautifully well put. Larry Baer doesn't see what hurt he causes to a minority community bringing back Glenn Kuiper but getting rid of a very popular PA announcer like Renel whose not only a PA announcer but a former morning person with high ratings on KISS FM. Larry continues to blunder from holding onto territorial rights away from the Oakland A's, to brining back Glen Kuiper and now Renel is gone. What next?

      Delete
    2. @11:03- Yeah, if the Giants end up making that decision, can you imagine the outrage? The Giants seriously need to brace themselves for that

      Delete
  6. Renel was a huge A's/Raiders fan before joining the Giants, and I can still remember her as the morning DJ on KMEL. If she can't work something out with the Giants, she would be a terrific podcaster. She has a wealth of knowledge about the Bay Area.

  7. Who gives a damn! A Roy Steele booming "Voice of God" she wasn't. She checked all of the boxes. Move on, there's nothing to see here. Rather have Kate Scott back in some form. Yes, I know she does PBP for the Sixers.

My message to Renel: Thank you for your service! I hope the next PA announcer will make as indelible of a mark as you did.

  10. Renel seems like a genuinely nice, kind, talented person. Like anyone around age 50, the Bean counters look at you as a liability. The 50+ crowd gets eased toward the door, and then their salary becomes an issue.
But, when you have a billionaire calling the shots the cries of “can’t afford these crazy financial demands” (By Renel) are ludicrous. It is highly likely Mr Johnson is getting $1 every day, just in interest.
Those “$10 a seat and a beer” tickets came with a price - Renel’s head.

    1. Spot on , nothing but DEI. Will not miss one bit.

      Delete
    2. No one can deny that she was a DEI hire when the Giants hired her in 2000, the first year of their new ballpark. She was the first black female announcer in pro sports, in a 'progressive' city like San Francisco. No shit she was a DEI hire.

While her skin color and gender got her in the door, she quickly proved that being a DEI hire doesn't always equal 'unqualified token hire' (even though it usually does mean that).

Who knows what the circumstances were really like behind the scenes during these alleged off-season negotiations, but sometimes it's just time to turn the page. Showing her the door doesn't mean she wasn't great; it just means it's time to move in a different direction and hopefully find a replacement who, in time, is equally as great.

Good riddance to Renel and welcome to whoever is next!

    1. 100% agree with you 2:26 PM. It all reminds of these people who think that hiring Glen Kuiper for select broadcast duties will have any effect whatsoever on anything, whether it be attendance, revenue, etc. It's one thing to talk about these things in echo chambers with people who get all riled up about this stuff, but 99.99999% of the population doesn't give two shits about any of this. To your point, at the end of the day what puts butts in the seats for the Giants especially is a winning product on the field. Everything else is silly noise.

      Delete
    2. 10:09, unless you have some solid stats to back your assertions, you can't claim 99.99999% of anything.

  14. I didn't go to the games for Renel. The management is horrible. The scouts and developmental teams are very bad. Now you pay top dollar to watch this untalented and midlevel group play. As they struggle in the division, watch attendance and ad revenue drop. The Giants know it's coming. How many stars have they over the recent years. Lots of look at the big guy coming up, then there he goes back down. Like a shortstop we know.

  21. All of this fuss for a PA announcer who was making...$200K/year? How much? Seriously? The only reason why it's a big deal is because a woman is involved and a woman who's a person of color. Plain and simple. After all, we're in progressive crime-riddled San Francisco and in these race and gender sensitive time. The PA announcer isn't the star attraction. People don't come to the ball park to hear the PA person, that's for sure. If you just do your job and don't draw attention, you're golden. Bob Sheppard did it in New York with the Yankees and the Giants. The Giants will probably hire some screamer who'll be a showboat attention-getting fool. Can't wait!

    1. Thankfully, the Billionaire owner of your SF Giants supports Marjorie Taylor Green, Lauren Boebert, and Matt Gaetz. He pays less taxes than the average streetsweeper. Renel Brooks was in public relations - the old meet and greet stuff. She got paid well, no doubt, but apparently the Billionaire wanted to buy his grandson a yacht, do adios Renel.
      Tip your wait staff well🙏

    2. Someone mentioned above that the Giants will probably hire a transgender announcer. There was a time not too long ago when the Giants would have strongly considered that possibility. However, under the regime of principal owner Charles Johnson, they seem to be embracing a more conventional and traditional approach. Normal, if you will, which is reassuring. This includes requiring all players to stand for the anthem, parting ways with DEI hire Renel, and bringing conservative Buster Posey into the ownership group, with announced plans to make him the public face, among other changes.
I'm guessing they will hire a well-qualified white man who will excel in the role. The irony is, after approximately 25 years of having a black female announcer, such a hire would actually contribute to diversification.

    3. 200K a year for a PA announcer? Not even close. It's a part time gig. As far as her work in the booth goes, it's more like
50K. Personal appearances (yawn) would supplement this
amount. To report that this was a contract dispute is laughable. Who is Renel -- Shohei Ohtani? Guess they needed
      Renel's pittance for Snell's salary.

  22. If anyone is curious as to why Renel was shown the door after the Giants allegedly made half-hearted and half-asses attempts to “keep” her….from Ann Killion’s article in the Chronicle:

“It’s a terrible move for a team whose majority owner Charles Johnson funds right-wing politicians who were supportive of undermining a democratic election and who have tried to disenfranchise Black voters across America. Brooks-Moon was one of the few in the Giants’ organization to publicly decry Johnson’s political activity. She also was outspoken in 2020 in support of Black Lives Matter. It doesn’t take a crazy, Johnson-backed conspiracy theorist to connect the dots.”

  25. If Renel was pulling down $200K as the PA announcer & community relations rep for the Giants, she should have been laughing all the way to bank 🏦 No one makes that kind of money in MLB organizations except for former ball players or super celebrities. No one is going to fault her for going for a raise, but if the club said no, enjoy your gravy train gig or go get a real job! Most PA gigs pay $100 to 150 per game tops and people are standing in line them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @12:35- I didn't know PA gigs pay that. I thought for sure it would be more than that..... I had no idea Renel was making probably $200K if that's the case, but as you alluded to and as Rich said in his video, a lot of that may of had to do with the community events, and probably events that other people in the organization don't get a chance to be a part of or have access to.

  27. Speaking of the Giants, we know one person who is NOT a baseball fan...

this morning KTVU anchor Andre Senior twice read a story about the signing of pitcher Blake Snell and each time referred to him as the 'reigning "See-Why" young award winner.'

Once again proving Rich's point that most of the anchors and reporters around here have no clue about anything they cover

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. @8:20, Andre Senior is from Jamaica, you dummy. He's been vocal about that. Baseball isn't the national pastime there. Do you know the name of the award that the Pakistan Field Hockey Federation gives annually to the best center-half? Exactly. So don't mock Senior for not knowing how to pronounce Cy Young the way YOU would like him to.

      Delete
    2. @9:18 If I had to report on Pakistan Field Hockey as part of my job, I'd damn well be sure I knew how to pronounce the awards. If you work in TV news in America, you need to know how to pronounce stuff that happens in America.

That said, the fault in the KTVU broadcast probably wasn't Senior's but the writer who, based on 8:20's description, put "CY" in the teleprompter instead of "Cy Young". Senior went off the teleprompter. That kind of foul up happens all the time.

      Delete
    3. 918 - You're ridiculous! Who cares where Andre is from?
He works here now. This was a flub that screams laziness
and not doing your homework! Who are you to be calling
      someone else a dummy?

    4. He probably had KY Jelly on his mind

      Delete
    5. It's not about an anchor's knowledge; they're not Jeopardy contestants, and nobody expects them to be a walking encyclopedia. Instead, Senior's inability to pronounce "Cy Young" is entirely due to his lack of preparation. Anchoring 101 mandates that you review your script before going on air to catch typos, poorly worded segments, and identify any pronunciation challenges. All serious anchors adhere to this practice. Those who don't care simply go on air without knowing what they'll say until it appears on the prompter as they read it. So when you witness an anchor stumbling over a typo or struggling with pronunciation, it's a matter of preparation.

However, to your point, yes, it's evident that Senior isn't a baseball fan because the Cy Young Award is a well-known term among anyone who follows American sports.

  30. I have to say this about brooks. This had. Nothing to do with her being a woman or being black. She just wasn’t good. She was okay. Nothing more. I used to listen to her on the radio. She was fantastic. But she dropped all her personality when she started announcing for the giants. There was just nothing there. For those of u defending her I ask one question. Did she make the game more exciting for you???

    1. i have to agree. She was not a great PA announcer, but she's been there forever. The Giants totally blew how they handled this.

    2. 6:55 well said. Was she bad? No. Was she great. No. She was good and did she serve the organization well for nearly 25 years? Absolutely. Was she well-liked by the fan base at large? That has become abundantly clear over the past few days.

So multiple things can be true at once, including all of the above. Also true is that, as you said, the team has utterly botched the public relations response. And, what's also true is that the Giants are free to move in any direction they want whether or not the marjority of the fan base likes the decision. Companies have to make difficult decisions about all sorts of things, including personnel matters, and change is inevitable.

If I were to run into Renel on the street i'd thank her for her service and the memories. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to the next PA announcer being the voice of many Giants memories for years to come.

    1. Just because you're not a fan of a PA announcer doesn't mean you're racist. And just because you're a fan of change after 25 years doesn't mean you're a racist.

If you're referring to DEI comments, is anyone suggesting that Renel, when she was hired in 2000, and widely touted by the Giants as the first black female announcer in sports, wasn't a DEI hire?! Diversity Equity and Inclusion isn't a bad thing and DEI isn't a bad word. Granting opportunities to a wide array of qualified candidates seems like a good thing to me. But hey, maybe that makes me a racist.
