Giants/KNBR I Guess Sneak Glen Kuiper into Broadcast Plan

44 comments:

  1. Sneaking Glen in is a good way to put it. Papa and Lund interviewed Glen recently and they didn't talk about the incident. It feels like KNBR is using Spring Training to gauge the fan's reactions. Personally, I think Glen is better than Duane at PxP.

    1. Glen is going to be great. Huge overreaction by cancel culture.

  2. If the Giants are winning this season, everything will be swept under the rug, including Melvin's mandate for all players to be present for the national anthem. But it looks like a very long season ahead, mostly due to a bad starting rotation.

    1. Yep! Bullseye @2:45pm No starting pitching will mean that this team might finish in last place behind the Rockies and seal Farhan's fate as GM. Not looking forward to this season.

    2. 12:49, the Giants led MLB in bullpen innings last season and was 4th two season's ago. Without dependable starting pitching, the Giants will continue to miss the playoffs. Farhan has certainly made some questionable moves during his tenure, and this season could very well be his last.

    3. @12:49, last place for the Giants is very realistic. Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Rockies have all improved. The Giants will be battling the Padres to see who stays out of last place.

  3. Duane having a lot of "power" is strange since he is very vanilla. His monotone voice can put people to sleep.

  4. So you don't like that no one asked him, on this one particular broadcast, about the N-word incident. He's been on KNBR a few times this Spring Training. Should he be expected to discuss this incident every time he's on the air? Ironically, when you had Ted Robinson on your show, you didn't inquire about his highly insensitive comments regarding Ray Rice and domestic violence, which resulted in his suspension and subsequent formal apology. Unlike Kuiper's comments, which many argue were a 'slip of the tongue,' Robinson's comments, regardless of his intent, were deliberately stated.

  5. I think I read Glen grew up in a somewhat racist Wisconsin suburb where the word was used often. So I guess his “excuse” could be growing up in that environment with some racists in the community the word infiltrated his brain. None of this Turrets syndrome bullshit someone suggested could be the case. However, if you want to give him the benefit of doubt, is he then a racist now for accidentally recalling and using the word instead of “negro” for the museum, having no hatred or demeaning intent? As far as I know he has no history of being racist with or talking about blacks. If using the word in any circumstance such as accidentally is the being a racist standard, I see some hypocrisy and unfairness in that. After your first YouTube on this someone presented a comment argument in response to my question on why some blacks use the word. I presume it was possibly a white guy (maybe Frank I suppose) like me, who said “it's a cultural thing. It happens with many ethnicities. It's said in the spirit of commonality and friendship, not out of hate and ignorance.” If a racist word is ok to use by the race, proliferating use of the word beyond the culture could be an unintended consequence as well as normalizing a word that in my opinion has no business being in anyone’s vocabulary and linguistics.

    1. Yep, this is a good point. Being an A's fan, I've listened to Glen do play by play since day one. I feel like he used an "n" word not as hate, but as a word that is commonly used in areas of his upbringing. This still doesn't make it right, but why is it OK for black people to use the "n" word?

  6. With the slow crawl to the finish line for Kruk n Kuip , replacements are inevitable. The Giants have Fleming leaving on assignment, and Miller following suit. Within 5 years, there will be a mostly new team of announcers.
    So far, zero likely candidates.

    1. 5 years? Highly unlikely they last that long. My guess is if this year is a stinker (an by all accounts it will be) then K&K will call it a day at the end of this year. Next year will be Glenn and another person on the call. Miller and Flem might stay... might.

    2. I agree. Fleming is a young star that major networks will want to lock up, so his days with the Giants are numbered. Everyone else is closer and closer to retirement.

    3. @3:29, if Duane hangs 'em up, there's really no leverage to keep Glen, so he's just barely hanging on(that's if he even makes it past the first few months of '24)

  7. For 10 minutes tonight ktvu had no audio during the 10pm news. Video was fine but no sound. I checked two other tvs and same problem. All other channels were fine. What a clown show.

    1. Yep part of that was Bill Martin didn't turn his mike on while doing the weather. But then they came back to Julie (wow she was there on a Sunday night?) and you couldn't hear her. What a joke!

    2. Twas the Ghost of Frank S jerking the chains. His visage hovers over all who roam the halls. Sabotage?! Probably

    3. That tells me it wasn't a mic issue. No audio from multiple on air talent? Control room blunder for sure.

      Delete
    4. I also heard it. It cut out during Bill Martin's first weather report around 10:20. It briefly came back while he was talking, only to cut out again almost immediately. It definitely wasn't a microphone issue because there was no audio from Haener, Mibach, their video reports or commercials. It would be nice if Rich dug into this case of what is almost certainly control room incompetence.

    5. Sounds like the infamous “bong buddies” were running the ktvu control room after having a bit too much fun during their break. Their bong rips are beyond legendary.

  8. Kuiper actually used the word twice, which is why he was fired...

    1. He could get away with it back in Wisconsin, but using the "n" word while representing an Oakland-based team is just career suicide.

  9. Another brilliant move by Kopey Kopes, who if I'm not mistaken is African American last time I checked? But he is going to let a closeted bigot/racist on the air becuase his big brother Glen has some nepotistic pull with the Giants and KNBR. This is wrong and Glen Kuiper should not be allowed anywhere on the airwaves even if it was a "mistake". KNBR and Cumulus continue to make foolish, not well thought moves. Adam Copeland stumble bums his way through being a phantom PD (program director) who shouldn't even be on the air with his best buddy Tommy "Pass Me A Beer" Tolbert. When the Giants suck this season and no one is listening, KNBR will quietly go away and transition to syndicated program and Kopey Kopes will be wearing a signboard in front of Oracle Park telling anyone who will listen that he used to be somebody. Weakling!

    1. Just guessing but I will go out on a limb and guess the SF Giants control their broadcast booth. They pay the salaries, the furnish the wienies.

    2. No spring training TV games . Radio once in a while. No chance to see the youngsters play because NBC bay area and KNBR can't afford the set up and broadcaster pay

    3. The Giants made the decision to not show spring ball

  10. Does anyone even listen to Giants games?

    1. @4:55- Tons of people do. Giants games are part of the reason why KNBR kills it in the ratings during baseball season

      Delete
    2. Although I like to watch baseball on occasion and prefer just seeing highlights, listening to whole games is kind of mind numbing and boring. Mostly a lot of chatter about nothing but it kills time if you are traveling far like from Tahoe or SoCal back home when at least at some point you can pick up the KNBR signal which is the only decent thing about that station. 95.7 The Game is better sports talk now but there are many spots within the Bay Area where their signal is terrible. Wonder why they don’t get better equipment if they want to continue kicking KNBR’s ass.

    3. @8:50, completely agree. Listening to pre and post game interviews and stories are one thing, but trying to listen to a full game is tough. There's too much idol time.

  11. Regarding this, the Giants really are playing with fire here. Yeah, if Glen Kuiper is not going to be calling games and just doing Giants pregame hits, then maybe no one will notice, but if he fills in and starts calling games, as I mentioned before, that could be a PR disaster.

    1. Otis III, enjoy reading your points of view like on this. I think we all have said the wrong word by accident (let’s hope this is this case with Kuiper) and maybe even twice. He does not seem racist in actions otherwise as far as we know. Why should we not give him his second and final break similar to Somerville whose actions could have killed someone by accident? I think if people want him to be stigmatized for life as a racist for a “word” and they can’t forgive him in this case, it is sad as I thought many Black people are religious and thus forgiving people. Even the Director of the Negro Baseball Museum must have saw something in Kuiper he actually met and gave a tour to. I think the Black religious leaders in SF and Oakland should meet Glen Kuiper to see what they think of him as a person. They may be good judges of the true character of a person.

    3. People have short attention spans and quite frankly 99.99% of people don't care about this story. No one is going to boycott the Giants nor will the Giants suffer any notable decrease in revenue or attendance because of a fill-in announcer they hire. People can argue about this in echo chambers all they want but the rest of the world has moved on from this flub and it sounds like the Giants have as well.

      Delete
    4. @10:02- Thanks man, I appreciate the kind words and the support!.... Regarding Glen Kuiper, yeah, people do deserve second chances and listening to him call games over the years, he didn't appear racist to me either, but it's unfortunate he misspoke using the N-word.

Yes, the Director of the Negro Leagues forgiving Glen Kuiper does speak volumes, and maybe as time passes, people will forgive him. It's just in this day and age, mistakes like these are magnified with social media and how fast people can get cancelled, even if they made a mistake they didn't mean to make.

  12. I was going to say what about their ace Logan Webb? Then, I read he “has a 10.70 ERA over 11⅔ innings in his first four spring starts.” Good luck with that! They may run out of mediocre at best relievers ready to go every day and have fielders pitch when losing so badly in games.

    1. Their relievers pitched the most innings in MLB in '23, when they had decent starters. This year, they barely have 3 starters. Good luck to the bullpen. Don't stay out too late and be sure to get plenty of sleep.

  13. I think the MLB Network is about $150 a season. However, you can watch any team you like any day with their team’s announcers, even for this Cactus League play. Not a big baseball fan but my Japanese wife bought it for watching the Dodgers with Ohtani and Yamamoto of course. We have that and tickets at a rip off price for a game when the Dodgers play the Giants at Oracle Park. I will wear my old Giant’s orange polo shirt (I am not into wearing a Jersey with a player name on back which as someone in this blog always mentions is childish, stupid, and/or weird). I bet you will see just as much Dodger blue there given the state of the Giants. Dodgers have some infield problems to figure out and their fielding is pretty bad but at least they can score a lot of runs to compensate.

    1. 9:20. Wear what ever you want. Preferably a Mays jersey as nobody can dispute the greatest 5 tool player in baseball. The tool, that writes those comments about it being "childish' is some soy-boy, cuck, polesmoker. The influx of Dodger fans is related to the hispanic community primarily. They're innocuous fans for the most part, it's the few that get "borracho" and turn into a luchador. Enjoy the season, have no expectations other than to just see some good fundamental baseball. Enjoy!

    2. Just remember there are local blackouts, meaning if you live in the Bay Area, you can't listen to Giants/A's games, even when you're outside of the Bay Area. One note though, MLB Network At-Bat is free to all T-Mobile customers.

    3. No worries, the Dodgers will choke, as they always do. Let em finish first for the next ten years - we Giants fans will laugh every time the Dodgers exit early in the playoffs. After all, we have 2 Favorite teams: the Giants and whoever is throttling the Dodgers. Duck the Fodgers
