KNBR Giants' Radio Woes; PIX MIA Bizarro; Saturday Pulse

33 comments:

  1. The SF GIANTS are not losing listeners because of the product they put on the field, they are losing listeners because of the moronic banter of Brian Murphy, Tom Tolbert, Adam Copeland, and John Lund. These asshats are definitely NOT worth a listen. Their opinions mean less to me than that of Crazy Guiggenheim. Not sure how they earn their keep, because it sure as hell has Nothing to do with talent or intelligence. Yet, their shit-shows continue. Sorry Giants, you have a Frosh-Soph B team surrounding your broadcasts, plainly and simply.

  2. Again, good job on the more calm segments.

There's a few things at KNBR that contribute to the lack of Giants talk.
    1. Giants have had a fairly quiet offseason, so there's not much to talk about.
    2. Giants have no marquee players and they're not an exciting team.
    3. Besides Marty Lurie, nobody knows baseball very well.
    4. The 9ers are a more interesting radio topic.
    5. Spring Training games just began today, so there should be more baseball-related topics to discuss next week.

    1. Agree with your assessment 4:55. I think when the Dodgers are in town for a change you will see more LA fans packing the stadium than Giants fans. Giants don’t otherwise sell out anymore since they suck and what you and Rich also mentioned. Giants ownership group and Farhan Zaidi GM & company don’t seem to know how to build a great team anymore. Someone on KNBR joked that if Joe Lacob owned the team his staff would have fielded a better team by now. Maybe no joke. I don’t know if Ohtani helped baseball by signing with the Dodgers. Might as well hand them the World Series trophy now as look at how loaded with talent their line up is. Who is even close?

    2. @11:36 The Dodgers won one WS title in the last 35+ years and that was a shorten Covid season. They consistently have one of the highest payrolls and consistently win a lot of games during the regular season, but they've been a failure in the postseason most of the time. By no means are they a lock for the WS title.

    3. Marty Lurie AND Bill Laskey are wonderful baseball analysts and historians. Last year, while Gabe Kapler was playing his moronic platooning games - Laskey had had enough and said as much. Kapler was a LOUSY Manager, thankfully they canned him.
The Dodgers have been loaded for years, yet they still sucked. Won only in the asterisk Covid season, which any baseball fan knows does not really count. The Dodgers will choke again this year.

  3. Guess who filled in for Darren this evening? Jessica Burch. However the forecast was a pre recording. Bizzare. Is this how we are forecasting future cuts?

    1. Don’t mock Jessica birch. She knows how to fly a helicopter, allegedly.

    2. 8:05. You obviously don't. Fly one, then come back and talk shit moron.

    3. I have no idea if Jessica Burch knows how to fly a helicopter, and frankly, I couldn't care less. However, speaking of Burch, what I do know is that Rich wields influence. Case in point, when Jessica's purchasing of social media followers reached absurd levels (growing to around 125k followers in just a few months, mainly accounts based in Pakistan and Iran), Rich finally called her out on his blog and exposed her pathetic practice. Just like that, it came to a halt. Literally overnight. It's barely grown since. Thank you, Rich, for holding this insecure nothingburger accountable.

    4. 10:43 Let it go Darren.

    5. "I have no idea if Jessica Burch knows how to fly a helicopter, and frankly, I couldn't care less."

You should care you damn scumbag. She's put her LIFE on the line to defend this country and YOUR freedoms. Does that mean nothing to you? How many combat missions have you flown? Yeah, that's right, NONE. Now take two seats and STFU.

    6. i believe Jessica is capable of flying a helicopter.

On another note she was there on Saturday’s 11PM newscast. Darren is not there tonight either and we have Paul Heggen in the evening live (like he does M-F).

    7. I’d never heard of this woman until today. She currently has “128,000” instagram followers. GIVE ME A BREAK!! I know of fairly big musical artists with hundreds of thousands of followers on spotify who don’t even crack 75,000 instagram followers. Pathetic indeed this meteorologist was purchasing followers. Even the luscious Olivia Horton she of the provocative outfits barely has 10,000 followers

    8. 2:10, this blog is Darren Peck's home away from home. He spends more time on it than flies on shit. Constantly lobbing attacks against his colleagues and posting ridiculously positive comments about himself under the 'anonymous' moniker.

    9. 3:45, Right!?!? She’s a nobody here but apparently she’s a big hit in Pakistan and Iran and India where the vast majority of accounts that follow her are based LOL

  4. Trust me with Jessica being a “pre-recorded” fill-in, Brian is not coming back trust me! Although they said any day, I have no expectations he’ll come back at all. Time that he calls it a career.

It really sounds like PIX wants to keep making more cuts and don’t want to admit they’re short staffed in the weather department. I’ll switch to NBC. KGO ain’t bad too. But not a fan of KTVU.

    1. Andrea Nakano opens with “Brian is off tonight,”two weeks in a row. Let’s see what happens. Brian covers weather?

      Delete
    2. That used to be the norm but the fact is if Darren is off, Brian will be his backup on the weekends, hence doing double duty. But here’s the problem, is it that with KPIX doing virtual 3D weather they think 3 people is good enough?

We had Jessica do pre recordings and she actually did come at 11PM on Saturday night and did the weather really well. Sunday, we had Paul Heggen. Andrea was surprised herself.

There’s one thing I am to recollect from memory. In Fall 2022, Sara was supposed to start anchoring the Late News at 11PM in September. Instead we had a host of anchors fill in like Kenny Choi and Andrea Nakano. It was only late October we had Sara come (1 month later).

With Brian Hackney, with Rich saying any day now, I have doubts of him returning. And besides as much as he’s good at his job at weather and anchoring, I don’t like his smart attitude when it comes to weather.

  5. NO. Lets talk chinese new year parade!
After all, it requires no news gathering.
    No journalism.
And is a great time filler for our station!
And to think, we get paid for this.
    Just like weather reports, easy.
    Game on !

watched KTVU chinese new year parade. Claudine Wong can ad lib and keep energy/conversation going. Mike Mibach not so much, he was boring actually

    1. Claudine did a good job, but I'd rather have Julie Haener back. Mike Mibach was bad....it's a miracle that Claudine didn't elbow him in the ribs for constantly interrupting her.

    2. 4:30PM, he consistently exhibits the same behavior on the news. He frequently interrupts Bill Martin and whoever does sports during their casual conversations or light banter. It's annoying, signaling that he isn't genuinely listening and believes whatever is on his mind is more important than what the other person is saying.

  7. With Chinese New Year behind us, ktvu can now return to its regularly scheduled programming: ambulance chasing and press release journalism.

    1. You forgot to mention their obsession with covering new restaurant openings, though I suppose that falls under the category of press releases.

  8. Ugh, baseball - white guys standing around for four hours.

    1. Actually, as far as players more like Latinos now with a smattering of Asians where the game is still popular.

    2. Seems like you haven't watched MLB baseball in decades. The games are no longer 4 hours long and it's far from a white guy's sport. 2023 demographics now show 59% white, 30% hispanic, 6% black, and 3% asian.

    3. Baseball is an acquired taste, like oysters, sushi, and deep fried baloney. It is relaxed and unhurried until it isn’t. REAL Baseball fans pay attention to every pitch - as there is a game within a game, between pitcher and hitter.
Listening to Baseball on the radio is one of life’s great pleasures.

  9. If you are paying attention you would know that games rarely go over 2 1/2- 3 hours

  10. Is there any assignment of ownership when it comes to anchoring at KTVU? Every time I watch the 10pm news, there are different anchors. There's zero consistency or continuity. Rich, you talk about Haener and Mibach but at this point it’s hard to tell if anyone actually has a set schedule at 10. Do they just pick names out of a hat or assign the task to anyone with a pulse who just happens to be in the building? If there are set schedules, then I guess people just call in sick all the time. It says a lot about a workplace when people look for any excuse to avoid it.

    1. Mike Mibach had a scheduled day off yesterday because he anchored the Chinese New Year parade on Saturday night. Julie Haener was off because, well, she's Julie Haener.

  11. Major League Baseball could triple its share of the sports marketplace if it adopted the NFL model for distributing TV and radio money.

  12. Baseball is at an all time low level here in the Bay Area. The A’s will field another Triple A team of nobodies and a few idiots will actually continue to show up, watch this lame duck team and put more $$$ into the pockets of that suprebe horse’s rear end of an owner of who’s name is not worth mentioning. As for the Giants? They probably won’t be as bad and boring as they were the last 2 years with Bob Melvin now managing, but will any of their acquisitions excite the fans? A Korean star who has never played above the equivalent of Double A ball. A lefthanded starter, yet another player who is coming off of major surgery and won’t be ready to pitch until after the all Star break. Another pitcher, a reliever who has NEVER started a single game but will be thrust into the rotation. And of course free agent slugger Jorge Soler who will hit 25-30 HEs but who will also strike out every 4th time at the plate and rarely hits over .250. Larry Baer, Rob Dean and Charles Johnson are responsible for creating this travesty as they fired capable GM Bobby Evans, who along with Brian Sabean constructed 3 World Series title winning teams by developing such stars as Posey, Crawford, Belt, Sandoval, Bumgarner. Lincecum and Cain.
But the Giants minor league system is a barren wasteland as Farhan Zaidi has hired a bunch of nun but scouts who don’t seem to have a grasp of what to look for in prospects. Analytics ‘whiz’ Zaidi knows ZILCH about baseball except for crunching numbers as he’s one of the many copycats around MLB who are trying to recreate what Billy Beane did in Oakland. Making Zaidi president of baseball operations was truly the most boneheaded move that Baer and his money grubbing cohorts ever made. But hey, the Giants’ owners are making more $$$ off the high priced real estate they own nearby and selling
“ hand crafted beer” and “ designer hotdogs” for $15-$20 is more important than putting a winning team together. Last year the Giants were 15th out if 30 MLB in average attendance, about 28,000 a game. They might do a little better than that and even challenge for a wild card berth but does anyone seriously think that the notorious “ bandwagon” fans are gonna want to waste $75 for a mediocre ticket, $40 for parking and shell out another $75 bucks for ballpark food to watch another boring, mediocre team? I mean seriousjy, who excites you? Jordan Hicks, Jorge Soler, Robbie Ray, Patrick Bailey, Mike Yastrzemski? The Giants have 3 players who are very good, Logan Webb, Thairo Estrada and Camilo Dovol. But three solid players are not enough to make a wining team. GREAT job Larry Baer.( NOT!) Hopefully the Giants will fail miserably and they’ll get rid of the incompetent Zaidi and hire someone who actually knows baseball.
