Ella Sogomonian Prime Time Beckoning at KRON; LA Bound?; KPIX Morning Blues; But Betty Yu is a Star; Larry Beil and Terilyn Joe: "It's a Small World" After All; Circle7 Mob Ashley/Sze; KCBS Ridiculous Parody Piece on "Barbie" Intellect That Wasn't; Paul Mac Tells Us He Has a Good Voice on KNBR: Impossible

A STAR IS BORN at KRON

Ella Sogomonian has been working her way up the KRON anchor desk for a few years now and it appears to have paid off.

Industry BUZZ: It's only a matter of time before Madame Ella is on board PRIME TIME! Or, as a local cynic told me: "she's from LA and they 'll (KTLA), grab her in a second if she wants to migrate."

First things first: Nothing is official but look for Ms. Sogomonian to ride the 6 and 10 PM waves come Sept.

*ACROSS THE STREET at KPIX: the morning crew is not as robust as it first appeared to be early on; a star pupil that thought she was above reproach is, in reality, worthless. Welcome to REALITY.

Just a question: who watches TV News anymore and especially in the morning?

*Yeah, that first-class travel and five-star hote;s is just plain rough and hard to endure: Jon Miller, gimme a break.

*SORRY, Betty Yu has something that you can't teach PRESENCE.

Which is why CBS is about to make her the highest-paid reporter in the Bay Area.

*The KGO (ABC7) MOB: Dan Ashley and Kristen Sze.

Mess with either of 'em and you could be headed to the Tenderloin.

*SPEAKING of The Mouse: Years ago, they were just the best of friends, Larry Beil and Terilyn Joe --Larry thought she was a hoot while Countess Joe was not so impressed with Mr. Beil.

*UNINTENTIONAL LAUGHTER at KCBS on Monday afternoon during the PM Drive.

An overly-long interview with a wonky PR woman talking about how women regard "Barbie"

It should have been a PARODY piece but instead was presented as actual news. What a crock.

Wait, it's KCBS, never mind.

*On KNBR's pitiful Morning Show, Tuesday, imbecile Paulie Mac said he really does have a good singing voice and that, given time, you'll just love him, yeah right, that's IMPOSSIBLE!

  1. Totally agree with you on Ella . She’s articulate , intelligent and although not drop dead gorgeous like Sarah Donchey , she is very attractive . If she doesn’t get a prime time gig here , she will have many opportunities elsewhere. Good call Rich .

  2. You are right on Rich, as always, regarding Betty Yu. I mean, just last night, Monday night, on the news, and it was repeated again this morning, Tuesday, on the morning news, was an interview Betty FINALLY got with the embattled Alameda County District Attorney. Betty was right there in her face, so to speak, asking the Price lady, all the big questions, such as why she is so soft on those perpetrating the crimes and wants to give lenient sentences, if at all, and so on. Well, finally the DA had had enough, and ended the interview. Betty was gracious as she is and demonstrated total class, especially as the cameraman was taking the mike off of Price, and Betty said that she hoped to be able to interview Price again in the future, Price then said in a smart-alek way, "I doubt it". I mean, that was the DA and Betty was totally nice and respectful to her, and she was rude to Betty Yu. Clearly Price didn't know that she was privileged to be interviewed by Betty, and Price had a great opportunity, but blew it. But Betty Yu was total class all the way, and that interview right there, demonstrated as to why Betty DOES indeed, Rich, as you said, deserve to be the highest paid reporter in the Bay area.

    1. I like Betty Yu from her anchoring to reporting & interviewing. She handled it with total class. Even in the newsroom, she is as professional. I’ve seen her only fill in on weekend evenings, rarely but when she does fill in, she does a great job. Also dresses professionally for a news setting. Can’t say the same about Donchey.

She needs to be the primetime anchor or anchoring the 11PM news instead of Donchey. The only other anchors who I think has professionalism & can do the news well are Jules, Brian Hackney, Max Darrow, Wilson Walker and Devin Fehely. KPIX needs to really rethink whom to put for which timeslots during the week.

    2. Can't feel sorry for all the cities electing all those soft on crime DA's like pamela price, key word: "ELECTED", yes, I saw the interview, don't say you didn't know about soft or almost no jail time and crimes being repeated at high rates in the future, I wonder why? At least SF CA has the balls to recall boudin, I'm also sure LA is loving gascon

    3. Betty did a GREAT job in that interview and she was right to leave in the raw moments such as when PP's new PR ho interrupted to tell her to ask about all the wonderful things this pathetic DA has done.

    4. @1:41 Agreed that Ms. Yu did a good job considering who the interviewee is; squirming and answering progressive "answers or explanations", pamela price is 100% delusional as far as her "ideas" of how racial justice should be meted out, total joke

    5. Betty asked valid questions and DA Price was a cluster fuck in her answers.

    6. Betty is the hero we need in the Democrat led Bay Area. She is opening peoples eyes to the destruction, mayhem, and overall terrible policies.

    7. I think the interview was much more revealing about Price and her level of incompetency than it was a showcase for Yu. She was excellent, of course, but Price put an exclamation point on her signature level of contempt for the people of Alameda county who made the devastating mistake of electing her in the first place...

  3. Sogomonian has the gravitas of a good newsreader. “Just the news - Mam,” said Sgt Friday. She’s quite good and thankfully defies the vacuous plastic blond requirement, (which is wrong on so many different levels).
I hope she gets the promotion. Good call Rich 👍👍

  4. Speaking of KPIX, the other night, Sara Donchey read a story about a crime in San Jose that police are seeking the public's help to solve. Donchey said, "SJPD is asking that you hit them up if you have any info." Mind you, she had on a blouse with one half tucked in, the other half wrinkled and untucked.

I get that KPIX has created an entirely different vibe for their late newscast; however, there's still a lot to be said for professionalism and the importance of proper communication, especially if the goal is to be a trusted source of information.

    1. Over time, we have seen Donchey get kind of worse in the anchor desk. Not just her clothing but her professionalism.

Last year even the 11pm news was still decent with Liz and Yamamoto around. Even more decent with Bastida.

Heggen is as bad but only from a clothing sense and wearing jeans. KNTV is still better, anchors are professionally dressed and there is still actual news.

CBS needs to really make more changes to their KPIX child. Anyway the fact is that it’s been 8 months and it has gotten significantly worse at certain hours, let’s see what they think of this in December or so.

    2. “…especially if the goal is to be a trusted source of information.”

At this point I don’t think kpix is worried about that, nor are they trying to be a respected source of information. Donchey is on immediately before Colbert and I’m pretty sure their primary goal is to keep viewers from the turning the channel. They do this by tailoring the presentation and delivery of the news to ‘speak to’ the demographic mostly likely to watch Colbert.

    3. I'd rather watch an attractive, fashionable woman showing her personality as she delivers the news than two old coots sitting in their anchor chairs like lifeless statues.

    4. Andrea Nakano is a good example of that. Attractive, yet professional in the way she dresses & presents the news. No nonsense anchor as well. She should really trade places with Sara Donchey either from anchoring or the field reporting.

Even someone like Kelsi Thorud or Lauren Toms would be good too. They are good field reporters and I feel they could try out the anchor desk.

    5. Donchey has toned down the clothes. None of the crazy colors, lime green or mini skirts.

  6. "and although not drop dead gorgeous like Sarah Donchey" Have you seen Ella's Instagram feed? She dresses really conservatively for the news. Nothing wrong with that but there's a lot more va-va-va-voom than what you see on KRON...

    1. Ella loves to rock skin tight dresses and minis. No complaints here.

      Delete
    2. The reason Ella is dressing conservatively, and she was seriously paraded by the former news director who is having an affair with the morning anchor. For dressing to provocatively. And there were several internal squabbles between Ella and one of the weather girls regarding whose dress cost more. So as always they'll take the low man on the totem pole and yell at them first. In this case Ella. They told her that she needed to dress down more, that we weren't going for a glitzy Hollywood news cast. Where other female Talent has worn $10,000 dresses on air. Because her daddy could afford them. It's just another case of Channel 4 being very short-sighted with what talent they do have. And tying their hands.

  8. Barbie is a cultural icon and beacon. She reflects the ethos of the times through several decades, starting in 1959 to the present. She has been an astronaut, an American president, a scientist, a physician, etc. she has had pointed feet, flat feet, skinny body, round voluptuous body, etc. and if you bought one in 1959 and didn't play with it, it's now worth 8k. The movie will be box office nirvana and signals a return to theaters, a good thing.

    1. Cultural icon and beacon for whom? Puh-leeze! Color me skeptical of anything that is “the ideal” toy. Until they market “white trash” Barbie, with her meth freak buddy toothless Ken, I shall skip the line to buy such land-fill.

    2. @10:53 You're joking right? If we had kids now no way no how would we patronize Disney in any of their parks, films or products; If Mr. Walt Disney were alive would he approve the direction Disney's going, I truly doubt that, all the present progressive nonsense

      Delete
    3. I will never support Disney again as their content is totally liberal and anti-family. And Barbie will be filled with poison, just wait and see.

      Delete
    4. Dear 2:51. Disney would be surprised to learn they owned Barbie or had any connection to this movie. It was produced by Margot Robie's production company, directed by Greta Gerwig, and Barbie is owned by Mattel, not Disney.

    5. @9:21 Doesn't matter, obviously you don't know about other media and messaging Disney is capitulating, parents don't their young children indoctrinated with inappropriate contents period

  9. Betty Yu is very classy and presents herself as an intelligent professional. I caught part of the DA interview in the morning. Boy the way it ended with the woman laughing says it all about the way the county is going.

Agreed. I've often wondered how she got a job in news in the Bay Area, and particularly at KPIX.

  10. Price had an opportunity to make herself look good, and she came off like a total train wreck. I actually wondered if she was on something! Props to Betty Yu for keeping her cool. She stayed calm and professional, especially when that flak interrupted.

    1. If i'm running the recall campaign, i'm running the end of that interview as an ad.

    2. @2:15 Doubt recall would work in that county, SF CA had the courage and wisdom to recall boudin, don't see Alameda County doing it, most residents wouldn't go for it

  12. If the DA only gives you 15 mins for an interview, that won't be much of an interview. Betty was in control from the jump, and Price just looked distracted. She should've taken the opportunity to provide specific details, but painting colored people as not getting fair trials is just an invitation for colored people to commit more crimes. Price will be ousted soon if she doesn't handle cases more objectively.

    1. Price thinks she is the smartest person in any room. Cant wait for the recall

      Delete
    2. Price’s hubris was not surprising to me. Her pattern of issuing videos to justify her decisions instead of sitting for an actual interview with an actual reporter answering pointed questions demonstrates her arrogance. Her refusal add enhancements to formal charges for capital crimes shows that she acts more like a criminal defense attorney instead of being county Distrct Attorney. Oakland residents wanted a progressive, reform minded DA, but does the rest of the county feel the same way?
With the violent crimes such robberies and shootings in the headlines and citizens alarmed about the number of experienced assistant attorneys being suspended, fired or resigning, Price is remaking the District Attorney’s Office in her image. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I suspect the recall petition will easily receive thousands of signatures and will be placed on the ballot. If the recall committee messages her bias successfully, she will be ousted. What is her campaign p, that more crime had been committed and she had sought minimum sentences for felonies? She is Chesea Boudin on steroids.

  18. The DA piece by Betty Yu was the only piece of real journalism I've seen from KPIX 5 in ages. Whenever I catch their news, it's always a bunch of amateur types or Bakersfield reporters. They look awkward and fresh out of college. Surprising for a big city like San Francisco.

  19. Personally, I think Ella is far more attractive and compelling than Sara.

  20. Serious question: does anyone under 60 actually watch local news? I have zero idea who any of these news people are. Zero. And I’ve lived in the Bay Area all my life. Local news fell off the cliff after Van Amberg, McEllhatten, Richmond, et al., retired.
