Glen Kuiper's Curious History; SF Giants/KNBR Crappy Radio Misfits FP Santangelo/Joe Ritzo; Eric Thomas Suddenly MIUA at KCBS: Hooray!; More Drama at KPIX; Burnout Central; Andria Borba Gone; Starrantino LA/CBS Beckoning; Sal Castaneda/KTVU $-Cutting from Fox; Thursday Rush

On first notice, it wouldn't appear Glen Kuiper is a bigot or racist; on the other hand, Kuiper uttered similar racial slurs during the 2020 season --the scene: a ballpark with cardboard cutouts and Mr. Kuiper's curious words.

*Both the Giants and KNBR, their flagship station, obviously don't give a damn about their radio product. The 4th-tier bread crumbs, FP Santangelo and Joe Ritzo, are BLAND and BORING. That's their best attributes.

Santangelo is an everyday embarrassment with cliche after cliche, bizarre, goofy and often repeating the same account over and over. He sounds like a little kid on his first audition day.

There's a reason Ritzo is a minor-league broadcaster; obviously the Giants didn't get the memo.

*Duane Kuiper isn't retiring merely because of his brother's verbal assaults; it's a lot more than that. But it did play a significant part. Duane has had a long, mostly successful career with the Giants and it's simply time to call it a day. In Duane's best scenario, the Giants win it all and he goes out on top.

*Bay Area media fraught with mediocrity and constant miscues and mayhem. Who'd have thunk an area supposedly rich in culture and flair would become so putrid and baseless. What a sad story.

*KCBS's Eric Thomas, out of nowhere is MIA on the morni ng drive news block. Great for KCBS's listeners. Bad for Jenny Seelig.

*KCB S continmues to run goofy promos: "we're the Bay Area's #1 news station!"--well, you're the ONLY news station--what itter bullshit!

*MY PREDICTION: Dallas Braden, A's TV analyst, who sat next to Glen, will be GONE and OUT at the end of the season. Just A HUNCH.

*ANOTHER MAJOR STAR at KPIX is about to LEAVE --it's another case of BURNOUT and fatigue and it has the same residue with Andria Borba's continued LOA. The people at PIX say the newsroom is chock full of UNHAPPY, TIRED, UNDERPAID personnel who are wary of Lisa White, (ND) and are NOT IMPRESSED with GM, Scott Warren.

What else is now?

*Oh, by the way, Borba won't be coming bck to PIX. The lawyers are already huddling.

*ADD Borba: I too think she was overrated and the weird voice didn't help matters. So, no great loss on my part.

*Sal Castaneda is perfectly fine to keep his $200K yearly salary in tact--the problem? Fox is thinking of CUTTING Sal to about $150K and change, Sal might have to 86 his trips to the local saloon with blond, secret admirers.

Sal's wife is downright giddy.

*More KTVU drama: Jesse Gary wants to get PAID only KTVU isn't interested. Advantage, Fox. Jesse, you're not even average.

*Amanda Starrantino has been talking to CBS people in LA and just in case, Scotty doesn't want to pay Mandy, hellllo Hollywood!

  7. So Amanda is planning to leave?!?? I don’t think she is that bad on the morning show. But I guess if it’s for better pay, that could be understood.

I thought it would have someone like Brian Hackney or Sara Donchey.

..Funny how posters and Rich complain about vanilla boring talent yet the one person with some style and charisma coupled with cogent commentary is derided.
He should be promoted or go national.
      Vince Cotronio is nothing special..

    3. Dallas is perfect for a podcast, but he's no TV personality. He tries too hard to be the intellectual with the catchphrases, and his interviewing style is cringeworthy. It wouldn't surprise me if he gets the pink slip mid-season.

  9. BTW - Jessica Burch is off today for the next 2 weeks because she is training for the national guard, so anyone who brings up Burch's absence and know why Peck is filling in, you have your answer.

I guess that partially explains why Peck was not there on Tuesday and at 3PM, they played a CBS stream recording with Jessica Burch (Heggen came in around 5PM)...is this another sign of weather cost cutting, where at 9AM, Noon, and 3PM, they will have a repeated weather recording instead of live views.

My guess is Brian Hackney will do the weather the next 2 weekends like he did on May 13. But Darren could also still come but he's only on during weekend evenings.

Another solution KPIX could think of doing from a weather cost cutting perspective is play one of the weather stream recordings at 11PM too on weekends. That way unless there is a serious important weather event (like rain or heat wave), they could do this. This will also help Darren Peck, if he has to work on a Monday morning and fill in for Jessica Burch. That might be another thought if for some reason, Brian Hackney retires.

Wrong. If you’re gonna talk shit at least get your facts straight.

  21. So it would be for all practical purposes Amanda Starrantino to KCAL / KCBS in exchange for Sara Donchey? That'd be what they call in the stock-market biz a "wash sale." It's hard to figure where AS would fit in to CBS LA's schedule though, there's just been a lot of new hires for AM.

As part of that story she read a tweet about San Francisco that referenced the ‘Beatnicks.’ The tweet was displayed as a graphic while she read it. One problem: O’Bozo paused when she got to that word and said ‘Bertnicks.’
I don’t blame O’Bozo for not knowing the Beatnicks but Journalism 101 dictates that you read your script/copy and be on the lookout for unfamiliar words or pronunciation pitfalls.

You’ve obviously never seen her in person because if you had you’d be calling her Bailey O’BUNS. Baby has back!

And since others have mentioned Sal: what are the odds Sal hasn’t already victimized and trapped Bailey with his suggestion of being ‘coffee buds?’ He’s been known to suggest that with attractive newbies (both on air and off air) under the guise of showing them the ropes and being a sounding board.
It’s funny though how he only ever offers to be “coffee buds” to attractive women, usually in their 20’s or early 30’s.
Funnier yet is how he usually suggests midday cocktails to his “coffee buds.” So much for coffee.
What’s even dumber is when he suggests it to women who work behind the scenes (finance, sales, etc). Seriously?!?

  24. Here we go again, Julie Haener is starting in with her erratic schedule and excessive absences again. You knew she wouldn’t be able to resist missing 75% of her shifts again. Tonight Cristina Rendon didn’t even say “In tonight for Julie” at the beginning of the 10 o’clock news.

  25. I havent come to this blog in years until tonight. I cannot believe you're still doing this! What is there even to talk about in the world of radio anymore? As far as local news I haven't seen a newscast in like 5 years at least! Keep on keeping on!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Re: Bailey not knowing/botching the word 'beatnick'....I didn't see that but I'm not shocked. She's apparently following in the footsteps of Dave Clark and Frank Mallicoat, who each make no fewer than several dozen gaffes per newscast and consider it a major accomplishment if they can get through a read without stumbling and bumbling. IMO Frank and Dave are much worse than Bailey because they're veterans who've been doing this for decades AND they're literally sitting on their asses reading words of a prompter, yet they still find new ways to fail miserably. Bailey at least has the excuse that she's young AND has to improvise each of her live shots without the benefit of a teleprompter.

    1. “Young” is the key word I just looked her up she recently graduated college. The question is WHY would ktvu hire her in the first place don’t you have to make a few stops to get to a top 10 market. Guess not anymore

      Delete
  27. I think people are being way too harsh on Bailey. Yeah she’s green and it’s clear she has lots (and lots) to learn about how to do her job effectively. She could also benefit from a deep dive into Bay Area geography, so as to avoid easily avoidable faux pas like referring to “Mission Avenue” (the street in SF).

But it’s also clear she’s trying.
The real issue isn’t Bailey’s inexperience on display each day. The issue is KTVU (aka, Amber) has chosen to put Bailey in front of the camera when she’s clearly not ready. In doing so Amber gives Bailey experience but also opens her up to all the critiques and criticisms.

Places like Toledo and Boise and Mobile are where the Bailey’s of the world would work their way up as they worked out the kinks and honed their craft. A market like the Bay Area was a destination that a young reporter like Bailey aspired to work.

I acknowledge that local tv budgets aren’t what they once were so it’s not just a KTVU thing, but the fact that KTVU has settled in quite well as a bottom dweller means that they’re ability to attract decent talent is gone. All you have now at KTVU are overpaid hangers-on, windbags, and assmats, and … young reporters like Bailey who are in way over their heads and have to deal with workplace
creeps like Sal Castenada to boot.

I liked Papa doing basketball, but the only reason he got the Niners job was because Robinson was putting folks to sleep. Papa makes some plays sound like they were miraculous game winners when they were a 3 yard gain on 2nd down against a lousy team. He has no filter. Give me Simmons, or Starkey any day over the blabbing shouting Papa. His act might work in Wallet Creek, but it sounds like an excited pre-pubescent boy to actual adults.
Tim Roy has more restraint, but even he gets a little too giddy for an announcer.

  30. This weekend during the mornings, Devin Fehely was off and I found out it was due to the Emmy awards ceremony, which a good number of people attended. Devin won another Emmy and deserves it as he is personable and very crisp in his delivery, exuding confidence and balancing what he says is the truth. If anything, I believe he is severely underutilized just working on weekend mornings and field reporting 3x a week. He should be the face of the station and in a better timeslot, let's say 11PM on weeknights or even paired with someone like Brian Hackney.

We had Reed Cowan fill in yesterday and Kelsi Thorud who also filled in a few months ago fill in today. Kelsi can sometimes be found explaining a few stories in the newsroom on Juliette or Sara's show and in terms of her personality, she has improved considerably and at least smiles a good chunk of the time now compared to a few months ago where she can appear awkward and sad like Paul Heggen.

  31. For the first time in over a year, this past Monday & Tuesday we saw Mary Lee in the studio during the morning. I guess it was to give Darren Peck a well deserved 2 days off. He worked for about 11 days straight which included his weekend duties. Maybe the other reason was due to programming scheduling which Peck likely had to be there at 11 so that they can snag Mary Lee for the next day morning. Then again as Jessica Burch pointed out she would be out for a few weeks due to National Guard requirements.

I anticipate Burch should be back next week. Both her and Mary Lee are incredibly great. They appear humble & friendly, give the forecast in a direct & quick way saving the viewers more time & participate in the Morning Mix. Also great energy from these two. Darren Peck came back today and while he’s great and has improved a bit from his attitude, besides just his weather chops, I don’t see him to be comfortable on the weekday mornings. Plus his forecasts take more time to get to the point.

I prefer Mary Lee any day, best meteorologist and science geek KPIX has. She should replace Hackney’s role in terms of weather & science reports if at all Hackney retires.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Burch is back on Friday 6/16. On tonight’s 11PM newscasts, Paul Heggen was not there tonight and there was no fill-in. Instead, just a CBS stream weather recording with him instead of seeing him interacting with Sara or tossing it to the sports anchor.

Sounds to be a sign of cost cutting. The one time they need to do this is if Darren is supposed to work Monday morning & is not there at 11PM sunday night rather than make Hackney do double duty. It’s not a regular thing but it has happened. First weekend mornings and now 11PM newscasts unless its a weather related alert/emergency. Wow! I have also observed other channels and they did not go this far and still have it organized. KPIX is a problem.
