The windy day had another chilling, massively compelling image: the fallen glass from the BofA building at 555 California:
*The BEST coverage --summation, really, of the windy/rainy storm was PIX itself and its 7 PM show with Juliette Goodrich.
Captivating, compelling and powerful personal images, including that of a father and daughter narrowly misssing getting hit by a fallen tree. Interesting and scary at the same time.
Goodrich did a solid job with globs of video that was shown at 7--standing and all. Sometimes, as powerful and thorough the video is, can get lost amid all the other images brought forth in a thirty-minute newscast.Goodrich was also effective in a one/one split screen with various reporters who covered the latest storm.
She also did somethinhg of a marvel: she brought out some wry humor from weather anchor, Paul Heggen, who every now and then gets a little too weather-geeky for my taste.
*KPIX has seen mucho critical hit from me regarding its brazen, new, brand of newscasts--on this event, give credit where credit is due: they did good.
Len Ramirez and Juliette are veteran reporters and anchors, and it shows. Think Len has been there longer since Jules but all reports I’ve seen from him are very solid and get to the point.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Juliette’s show and she deserves the best rating in my opinion. Her abilty to report, shoot videos and anchor, just one of the best anchors PIX has.
I enjoy the Lez Krautz Donkey Show. She makes change!
DeleteJ.G. Brings the goods every night and not one to shy away from tossing a good double entendre. Keeps people on their toes. Solid in all aspects and a personal fav. KTVU. This what a consummate '"Pro" is. A gold standard you could only dream about having.
ReplyDeleteLen is one truly great reporter.
ReplyDeleteI find myself watching Juliette at six and seven more and more. ABC 7 is still my go to station but I do find that the reporting over at PIX is kinda top notch these days. And yes, they were on point yesterday amidst all the falling trees and debris. Investigative Reports: Why Do All These Trees Keep Falling? Lived here all my life and this doesn't seem normal, people. Climate change or nah?? If things keep up I guess all the stations are going to need an arborist on staff as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes...Goodrich can be found anchoring in addition to reporting and being her own camerawoman on stories on the way in to the studio as well. Quite the feat, indeed. Which makes me wonder why she was regulated to weekends for a period. Maybe her own choice at the time.
I also find myself tuning into the Club Donchey Late News at 11 more and more, too. I don't get all the negativity towards her. She may be a little L.A. in style. But it seems like she's finally finding her niche here in the bay area. I also find the techno bumper music in between commercials kinda fun and different. Only thing missing is the disco ball. With all that walking they do, might as well. Hey at least they're trying something to keep it fresh. Take a lesson, KTVU!!!
Even the first few weekends since the KPIX graphics revamp (Christmas & New Years), the techno music was on the 11PM news with Brian & Andrea. After Jan 8, they switched the weekend 11PM versions to the version used on the 6PM & 7PM news.
DeleteJuliette Goodrich is the consummate professional. She is a proven journalist. I watch KPIX at 6:00 and Sara Donchey at 11:00 now instead of KGO. Sara is developing into an excellent anchor, too.
DeleteConsummate pros. It’s all about the stories, not them. Take note Haener and others.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Haener is a "me" person. At this point, she's so disinterested in the whole thing she'd rather slink away.
DeleteOh look, wind. Just like the wind from the past millions of years.
ReplyDeleteMore at 11.
I like Goodrich too; I'm also starting to like the morning crew of Franco, Starantino, Burch, rather watch these three than the clowns on ABC 7 News
ReplyDeleteGoodrich should be the the top anchor IMO.
ReplyDeleteTonight’s pathetic example of ‘press release journalism’ at KTVU: a story about a new* In-N-Out Burger food truck.
ReplyDeleteThat’s it. That was the story. Yet they did a tease, package, and anchor happy talk bringing the TST to approximaley 2.5 minuntes.
For context, they did a story about rising fentanyl overdose deaths in Alameda county. Total story time of 30 seconds.
* In-N-Out food trucks are not new and are not newsworthy. They’ve been around since at least the mid-1990’s in the Bay Area, and there are nearly a dozen in Southern California. Spending 2.5 minutes running an add for a private business is embarrassing.
What a dumb comment. Some people actually like in n out, and would be happy to know they have another truck. Also, are you suggesting KTVU should never do a story just because a press release about it exists?
DeleteThink before you write.
Huh?? I’ve never seen an In N Out food truck. An In N Out food truck is news.
DeleteTonight on the ktvu 10 pm news: Red Lobster added some new items to this it lunch menu.
DeleteIt was only good because you were watching. I am sure the 7:00 PM newscast you reference (what? news at 7:00PM) was simply a rehash of something earlier, and then retolded again in a later newscast. I would bet the other stations told the wind story just as well and had the same story, or some variation of it.
ReplyDeleteGoodrich definitely doing great work at 6 and 7:00, consummate pro as has been said. Loving all of the downpours, it's finally stopped Heggen from his standard "We'll take it" after a measly spit of precip falls from the norcal skies.
ReplyDeletePaul Heggan gets a little too weather geeky for you? Try watching Bill Martin dissect and elaborate on weather ad nauseum. What we need to know like forecasted temps by day are delivered later in the broadcast as there is just too much bs for him to deliver in the first segment. You will have to wait as the teased useful weather reports need to be later in other segments. Why do I care if the temp today was plus 1 degree from yesterday in my particular City? When I lived in the LA area weather reports lacked all this babbling trivia and presentations..
