TALENTED people supercede time and period.
I was a teenage kid in 1976 watching the debut of Barbara Walters on ABC (with Harry Reasoner); I watched Walter Cronkite on CBS; I marvaled at Frank Reynolds and Peter Jennings on ABC and used to enjoy Sam Donaldson ask questions at White House press conferences during the Reagan years.Yeah, I was a teen but I was interested in politics and media. It didn't matter that I was young, I wanted to watch and listen. Which ended up getting me hooked on KGO Radio in the early 70's when Watergate and the end of the Vietnam war ruled the news. It was quite a tumultuous time. So I wasn't alone. You had to know the moment and be aware of what was taking place before your very eyes and ears.
The TV people were great and the radio broadcasters too. I mean, solid, dedicated journalists. That element is almost a lost art today. Yes, there's some good people out there but they are the exception, not the rule.
I get ripped a lot lately by some for my yearning for the good, old days. Yeah, so what's wrong with that? They were the good old days and they've been replaced by a sorry state of the (political/culture) medium that is more concerned with looks and superficial crap as opposed to factual meaning and informative reporting, thanks Internet.
*NOTES...
Julie Haener chose to concentrate on her son's college footbal career; good for Julie. I got no issues with that but there's a bigger picture.Haener's private delight interfered with her job as a news anchor, for which she gets paid lots of money by KTVU/Fox. She chose motherhood over career and that's fine but you can't do both, Jules.
*KNBR broadcast Giants' Fan Fest on Saturday and the crowd at Oracle Park was very small --likely put off by a gloomy, rainy day and not-very-interesting team. Maybe, I'm told, there was less that 10K people at the event.
More ominous for KNBR/Cumulus: a sudden notice to staff of a serious medical issue involving a management person that was leaked last Monday.
*An industry wonk told me the 49ers' omission from the Super Bowl, (they lost to Philly in that ugly game a week ago) cost KNBR over $5M --that's a lot of moolah.
While the internet has escalated the decline of broadcast media, it was superficial and reliant on looks and personality long before Tim Berners-Lee—sorry, I mean Al Gore—invented the internet.
ReplyDeleteTens of thousands at Petco for Padres fan fest. 70.degree weather. They have stopped selling season tickets.
ReplyDeleteThere's a fever pitch for the Padres right now in San Diego. Their stadium looked lit last year in the playoffs. Their fans are on a high, similar to how us Giants fans were on a high with the Giants during the Giants World Series runs last decade. Interest in the Giants here in the Bay Area felt like it may have been at an all-time high at that point.
DeleteThe Padres are essentially going through the same thing currently in San Diego. Yeah, they haven't won anything yet, but the Padres sadly could be a very good team for years to come. Hate to say/type this as a Giants fan, but the NL West is the Dodgers and the Padres division right now. Let's just hope for the best for the Giants.
12:35 I was there...and it was ELECTRIC!!! I was in SD visiting my cousins--who took me to the FanFest. There is an electric vibe going on in the city, thanks to the Pads.
DeleteIf my understanding is correct, Haener's son will almost certainly be drafted by an NFL team in a few months. As a rookie with zero years of services, it's unlikely he'll get any meaningful playing time, unless his team has a Trey Lance/Jimmy Garpoopolo situation and Haener gets called in to carry the team. (He could be the next Brock Purdy!)
ReplyDeleteAssuming Julie wants to be there when he steps onto the field for the first time and takes his first snap, she'll need to travel to each of his games being that there's no way of knowing in advance when it'll happen.
Most games will be on Sunday but depending on the team there may be some Monday or Thursday games. NFL schedules are released in May and once it's out she'll be able to request all the necessary days off. Best case, travel wise, is that he'll get drafted by a west coast team. Worst case is she has to fly to the east coast/mid-west 16 times a year.
So I don't really understand why Julie would have to choose between her career and her son. The days off would be known well in advance and she'd be gone for a couple of days at a time. Presumably she could just move her two days off to coincide with his games and then maybe take an extra day off as needed.
KTVU has a solid bench including Cristina and Heather, so this really shouldn't be a problem.
Haener's son couldn't be the next Brock Purdy unless he has Purdy's qualities -- that will take more than just being in the right place at the right time.
Delete6:48 Jake was named MVP of Saturday's Senior Bowl. He went 12 of 19 for a modest 139 yards....band a pretty nice 44yd TD toss to Stanford WR Michael Wilson. Haener set a Fresno State career completion rate this year (68.1%). He's got the career stats...and Mel Kiper likes him. The one negative is his height/weight (6'1" 200lbs)
Delete6:48, calm down there keyboard quarterback. I’m pretty sure the OP meant Haener could be the next Purdy in that he could be a #3 forced to start if the #1 and #2 go down. I didn’t get anywhere in the comment that they were suggest Haener would perform and put up numbers like Purdy.
DeleteSo Julie plans to retire early and be her son manager hoping he will be an NFL quarterback?? Good luck!!
ReplyDelete"*KNBR broadcast Giants' Fan Fest on Saturday and the crowd at Oracle Park was very small --likely puf off by a gloomy, rainy day and not-very-interesting team."
ReplyDeleteOr put off by an asshat manager who keeps cases of beard and hair dye in his office.
The Giants organization whiffed on not one but two superstar talents in the off-season. So it's not surprising that fans start speaking with their absence from games and pre-hype events like Fan-Fest.
ReplyDeleteCheering for another year of .500 baseball?!? No thanks. Outside of an aging Brandon Crawford and Joc Pederson this team is another Farhan Zahidi miss mash of players from the scrap heap. Good luck, peddling that KNBR 680 The Sports Leader. Even Hall Of Fame broadcaster Jon Miller has put in for more time off this season.
The Giants have a lot of problems that are kinda turning the team into a turnoff for me. Starting with majority owner Charles Johnson and his insistence on taking some of that money he makes off the team and donating to political nimrods like Herschel Walker, Lauren Boebert, and Marjorie Taylor (about to be green-less) Greene. (Even her husband can't stand her shenanigans.)
Always follow the money. And in this case it's being funneled into the exact opposite of what San Francisco used to represent. There's a reason why former WS players Aubry Huff and Michael Morse won't be invited back to the cookout at Oracle Park Mr. Johnson, without a well deserved chorus of boos. (Just peep their Twitter accounts for anyone who's confused.)
Ahhh....I guess we shall continue to look back on the glory days of 2010, '12, and '14 with the nostalgia of what could've been the forming of a true dynasty with one or two more WS wins. Maybe Buster Posey can un-retire for a year like Cher and at least give us something worth coming to the ballpark for. Till' then, here's to more 20 dollar beers, overpriced garlic fries and more empty seats unless this team vastly over performs in 2023. From KNBR's mouth to the baseball gods.
You are spot on about Charles Johnson. No way I am giving that rich kook a dime of my money.
DeleteI love the SF Giants, but so long as CJ is their owner, I “ain’t buying”. He is better suited for owning the Tampa Bay Rays.
@1:56- Regarding Judge and Correa, it's kind of disappointing that the Giants went through what they went thought this offseason trying to bring one of them in, when they both ended up staying put on their current teams. It's almost like was it really worth it? Fans felt betrayed and it sucks the Giants, even though some of their new additions aren't bad, are probably going to be the same team they were last year.
DeleteI'm going to hope for the best with the Giants, but yeah, it's not looking good right now. It's hard to get really excited about this Giants team when the teams the Giants have to compete with just in the NL are far better; Dodgers, Padres, Braves, Mets, Phillies, Cardinals. Even the Cubs look like a decent squad, and they sucked last year. The D-Backs even look like a promising young squad. Thankfully there's an extra wildcard spot, so hopefully the Giants can at least compete for a wildcard spot this year.
As far as the political stuff, that's not good either with the Giants. It's unfortunate Charles Johnson can't be ousted. Yeah, his political views are his business, but when it starts affecting the team, heads may have to roll even though yes, he's the owner. I wish MLB could step in and own the Giants, or maybe even have Joe Lacob come in and own the Giants. He wants to own an MLB team and it looks like he's not going to own the Angels now that Arte Moreno looks like he's going to stay put as their owner for now. A lot of A's fans want Lacob to own the A's and help keep them in Oakland, but I'm not sure if even Joe Lacob can turn the A's around at this point. Lacob owning the Giants would probably be more worthwhile for him. Plus, I heard Lacob is 67. I'm sure if he still wants to own an MLB team, he would want to own an MLB team that is in a good position to contend with the right ownership and pieces in place. The Giants despite all of their issues at the top, still may have that. The A's need a complete overhaul from the top down.
I checked Michael Morse's Twitter, and apparently he's a Ron DeSantis guy, but I wonder if part of that is because he lives in Florida? I never would've guessed. I thought for sure Morse would be more of a liberal guy. He really fit the culture of the Bay Area when he played for the Giants.... Huff, we all know by now is a jerk and a Trump guy. Still can't believe Huff threw away all the goodwill he achieved here in SF and the Bay Area in 2010. Huff was the toast of the town and could do no wrong.
As far as your last paragraph, yeah, all us Giants fans are left with right now are fun memories of last decade when the Giants won 3 titles and were kind of the envy of the MLB, even though the Giants sadly didn't get no real national recognition for those 3 titles. It's just feels like as the years go by, the Giants are further and further removed from those fun times, even though it wasn't that long ago. When the Giants honored the 2012 World Series team last year, just seeing that team again brought back great memories of 2012, but at the same time, seeing that team again felt like another lifetime when times were better in the world and with the Giants.
Why won't Michael Morse be invited to the cookout? What did he do?
Delete@4:36- Or the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, and Miami Marlins
DeleteTotal political hogwash! ONE of the Giants' owners is a conservative and this keeps you from going to games?
DeleteYou are not a true baseball fan if you use that as an excuse.
Good riddance.
'Why won't Michael Morse be invited to the cookout? What did he do?'
DeleteTotal rightwing nut-job and conspiracy theorist. I was surprised when I checked out his Twitter. Seemed like a cool dude and fun Giant. But after reading some of his posts...no thanks. That concussion he got in his last appearance as a Giant in that brawl must've really affected his brain. Living up to the stereotype that a lot of athletes are in fact dumb jocks. 'Take On Meeeee................' lol
We need more Otis. Said no one ever.
Delete@9:56- What's the problem?
DeleteTo quote Radinovic, “who will be in the squat? “. Having the KNBR fan boys pretend to interview players was pathetic, the questions were lame, and the answers equally weak. Apparently Vegas has the Giants as a .500 team. I would not bet on that, it seems excessive. 76-86 maybe. In fact I bet Bochy’s TexAss team, a team that stunk last year, will finish with a better record.
ReplyDeleteThe entire KNBR line-up, Murph n Mac, Papa n Lund, Tolbert n Copes, FP Look at ME, should be sent out to pasture in Nevada. Bad Radio from 6am-10pm. WHEN will we get some intelligent folks handling the day to day ops???
I have their record at Shit-Show .
Delete@3:44- I tried to listen to some of the players interviews for Fanfest on KNBR, and it was kind of a tough listen this year. Some of the hosts were trying hard to hype up the crowd and the cheers weren't all that loud like they were in previous Fanfests. It was kind of awkward.
DeleteWith all of that being said, I hope the Giants can win between 85-95 games. I know that sounds crazy, but maybe the Giants can catch lightning in a bottle this year like they did in 2021? Maybe this decade can be odd year magic like last decade was even year magic?
If you are not liking the KNBR weekday lineup, may I suggest 95.7 to you? They have a much better weekday lineup and the weekday shows on 95.7 flow better than KNBR's weekday shows.
I drove down King St shortly before the gates opened for FanFest. I have no way of estimating how many people were in line but it was a notably shorter line compared to recent years (and I’m not just talking about the WS years). As a lifelong Giants fan I’ll still keep up with them but there’s nothing inspiring about this year’s team.
ReplyDeletepapa and lund the tedious uh huh mmm hmmm guys,
ReplyDeletePapa fills time by repeating himself over and over and over. He loves the sound of his voice. Lund, smartly, just lets Papa pontificate, babble, and beat a thought to death. I used to enjoy Papa’s Warriors game calling, but in his radio host capacity, it isn’t much better than static. Obviously Lund learned early on, let Papa droll on…
DeleteI boycotted TV coverage of the Chinese New Year Parade on Saturday. It just wouldn't be the same without a little commentary by a token caucasian like Julie Haener. Julie has an air of insouciance in covering an ethnic event that I find refreshing in these days of political correctness.
ReplyDeleteIt’s astounding that John Rothmann is no longer educating and informing us on the radio with his keen intellect and insightful, penetrating analysis of current events. What a pity it is for all of us!
ReplyDeleteI’m out of the loop since they shifted him to drive time and he became unlistenable. Did he get canned? What about his good friend Steve Moskowitz? Who’s doing those dopey promos now with him!?
DeleteHe's still sucking up and brown nosing mark thompson and Kim mccalister once a week on marks you tube show..
DeleteI remember watching the Watergate hearings in Mr. Besse's class at Skyline HS, and yes, those were the good old days...
ReplyDelete"She chose motherhood over career and that's fine but you can't do both, Jules."
ReplyDeleteShe CAN do both and has every right to, but simply chose to focus on one.
Thanks Ms. Steinem - Kids love being in Child care at 8 weeks old.
ReplyDeleteI agree Rich. The media of the past was much better. Got their story straight before they reported it and didn't make up things just so they could get the first SCOOP. They also had Interns that knew how to spell and knew their way around the Bay Area. Now....they're just building a better Bay Area.
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand all the Julie Haener hate. She’s professional and great at what she does, not to mention very easy on the eyes.
ReplyDeleteGreg Papa said there are two Black QB's in the Super Bowl this year and maybe one day we won't have to bring it up. That jerk Papa brought it up and it never crossed my mind. It's always the people who claim other people are racist that are the real racist.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing racist about bringing up that both quarterbacks are Black this year. It is historic and wonderful that it falls in February for Black history month. In the past Black's were not supposed to play quarterback so it is wonderful to see so many prosper at the position and demonstrate that it can be done provided they have the opportunity. The next position is more Black NFL head coaches.
ReplyDeleteLet me know how that works out for you. How about hire the best man for the job. I want the best Dr., Pilots and Fireman and not the 15th best because of diversity.
DeleteDiversity hires to appease the SJW's and for political correctness, eliminates competition and dilutes a talent pool where mediocrity becomes the acceptable norm.
DeleteWas the serious medical condition to management caused by the loss of $5 million in revenue after the 49ers lost? That’d be understandable
ReplyDeleteJulie Haener's son Jake, was playing his last college football game as the quarterback of Fresno State. He won MVP at the Senior Bowl, where there were lots of NFL scouts. And he has been invited to the NFL combine later this month.
ReplyDeleteHe's a legit NFL prospect. His parents have been part of his football upbringing since he was a little kid. They have every right to be there for him in his last college game, regardless of what their job is.
Leave JH alone. She’s a smart beautiful woman.
DeleteDoes the Fashionista still have her crew of creepy photographers? Inquiring minds want to know.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Rich? Did you really say that Julie can't have a career and motherhood? Why not? Do you say that about male anchors? This is 2023 - not 1950! Geez!!
ReplyDelete
