Saturday, In the Park, You'd Think it Was 11th of February; KGO Radio Void; Thurston Shriek on KCBS Not Useful; A Few Other Notes

IN THE PARK...

AFTER the SOTU speech by President Joe Biden, I thought of a VOID. In the good old days, I would turn on KGO Radio and listen to reaction by some of the people. We don't have that option anymore and it's disgraceful.

A region of ten million people and we have el sucko for radio. KQED, I'm sorry, doesn't fit the mold. KCBS? Gimme a break.

Not just the SOTU reaction, the recent mass shootings made for enlightening, (for the most part) talk radio, KGO's staple, and we're left in the dark.

I went on my IPhone and listended to NY and Boston radio. While it wasn't local at least I could gage some reaction. I also tuned to CSPAN and it was fairly interesting but hardly entertaining.

A FEW NOTES...

*I've generally liked Pat Thurston's anchoring on KCBS but I can do without her "wooo-hooos" after tossing to a traffic anchor who reported a freeway re-opening. It's happened on several occasions. Please, Pat, KCBS is enough of a joke, don't make it worse.

*A middle-aged, experienced, award-winning reporter with over 20 years in the biz and broadcast chops to boot, sent a resume to KCBS and Jenny Seelig. The reporter, who is white, didn't even get a response. I only bring up his race because inside KCBS some tell me unless you're a woman, minority, or under 40, you got no chance here.

*That KCBS traffic reporter at night with the chirpy voice, is actually anchoring from Portland, Oregon, in case you're interested.

After all, KCBS is live and local.

  1. CSPAN is fine for watching the clowns in the Senate and House, but the commenters generally suck.

Or anywhere else in media today. It's one of the most racist industries out there. And still blacks are crying the blues.

    1. 100% true. And if you get fired twice from your last media job and now live in a friend’s house in Vegas, don’t even apply.

    2. Re: 1:48 — Sounds like the same former host that got busted taking uneaten food off plates from restaurants.

    3. Not in the south...and not at foKKKs news. I gotta put on my shades to watch these broadcasts....to protect my eyes from the blinding-white glare emanating from the anchors.

BTW--I'm an Asian-American male. I work behind the scenes--but my Asian male brethren have NOCHANCE of landing any anchoring gig in the south or at foKKKs.

  3. Lots of minorities getting rejected due to the PC crap. Truth

  4. I thought Pat made the transition from KGO host to KCBS news-reader pretty well. Her diction is about the best on KCBS. At KGO, she was too left-wing ignorant to me, but if she does straight news, she's polished and professional. One departure from that, however, came after the State of the Union when she and Doug Sovern were offering some analysis. They gave Biden a pass on everything -- stuff they would have lambasted Trump for doing. What they should have done is have a conservative to balance Sovern, with Pat serving as the moderator. That would have been way more interesting than listening to two liberals praise Biden up and down.

    1. If you don't like liberals praising Biden's speech you can turn on several right wing hosts and you will get the opposite. Problem is there's no alternative for liberals since KGO folded.

    2. That might tell you something.

    3. It tells me there's a shortage of liberal talk radio in the Bay Area, which is a shame, since it's a liberal area. All voices should be heard. Liberal, conservative and those in the middle. I listen to conservative hosts even though l don't often agree with them

  5. If what Jenny Zelig did is true, then someone can sue KCBS for ageism. Sadly, ageism is hard to prove. But if enough qualified people who've applied for work as a bandage applicator at KCBS are of a certain age and race, maybe they can get the word out. This may be better than dragging Audacity's ass to court. Bad publicity can be as effective as a lawsuit.

Ha ha ha!!! Sue KCBS for AGEISM?!? Are you crazy?!? Ageism is alive and well and always has been. Good luck getting the courts to acknowledge it. Certain kinds of discrimination are not only okay, but encouraged.

  6. I attempted to see who was listed on KCBS Radio during weekdays. The KCBS-Audacy website does not list the names of hosts. The schedule is either KCBS Morning-Midday-Afternoon or Overnight. No human mentioned. Poor.

    1. Because they don't want to name replacements so they don't have to pay them the same rate as permanent hosts. They're jipping the fill-ins.

  7. Talk radio is just noise. It’s like Letters to the Editor, and I don’t really give a damn what most people have to say. Which is, mostly, inane crap. And, yes, through the years I contributed to the inane crap. I do not miss the countless nitwits calling in about how they felt an earthquake or the brainiacs who would definitely know how to handle all these damned balloons

  8. But I DO miss Eason, Burns, and even Ronnnnnnnnnnnn

  9. As I generally tune out some person’s opinion on politics, super bowls, and wines, I cannot relate to those who are getting worked up by some paid mouthpiece who generates controversy. Adios KNBR, and HELLO KKHI !! The classical music always soothes this savage beast, and relaxes my attitude.
Face it, half of radio is only there to irritate you, get you riled up. The other half is there to sell you soap, legal services, cars, and ticky tacky housing.
Rare is the show which engages you, gives you pause, makes you think. But Americans would rather watch Brain Dead TV and avoid thinking altogether. “What’ll it be tonight, Real Housewives of X, or Munsters reruns?”
    Doomed. We are doomed.

  10. Gene Burns, Pete Wilson, John Rothman and back when Ronnie was on 3 hours he always had interesting shows the day after big events, or speeches. Analyzing the Stare of union speech, other important speeches. After the Oscar's Grammies and similar he did trash the Oscar's etc. always entertaining.

  11. Thurston often did "woo-hoo" after mentioning Bernie Sanders, very cringeworthy.

  12. Just an observation from someone who toiled on-air for over 40 years in radio-TV, mostly here in the Bay Area:
Unless you’ve got a sweetheart six figure plus salary with a minimum three year contract, you should get probably get out of the profession by age 65. I’ve seen too many older colleagues die off after dealing with serious health issues shortly after calling it a career. Years of dealing with deadlines while maintaining necessary the high energy needed to be do the job takes an unseen toll. So does having to deal with the whims of a mostly dysfunctional, bottom-line beholden management who can throw you out onto the street at a moment’s notice. But now, most significantly are the extreme cutbacks due to media consolidation. Deregulation has led to consolidation and the elimination of jobs. The now-shortchanged public used to rely on professional, credible broadcasting that catered to the community. Now the industry is dominated by syndicated programming and underpaid, overworked mostly young, minor league ‘talent’ who are required to spend an inordinate amount of time on social media. No country for ‘older’ pros!

  13. I haven't heard Thurston's "woo-hoo" thank goodness. In fact I haven't heard her much, if at all, on KCBS. I'll try to make a conscious effort to tune-in when she's on, whenever that is. Generally, I also find the "woo-hoo" expression from anybody annoying. I admit, my voice doesn't go high enough in pitch to do it myself (not jealous, just saying).

  14. Rich, in my comment about the station leaning left and reporting the Stanford professors findings, I meant to type KCBS, not KGo.

  15. Believe me, no non-white, experienced journalists are getting turned away from KCBS. If you did your research you'd see that diversity actually majorly lacks there. Before last month, we'd only been hiring white anchors and reporters for at least a year and a half. The only Black employees they hired have been Eric Thomas and a news fellow (whose time they fumbled and disrespected). And don't forget, when they did Black History Month segments a couple of years ago, they didn't even ask any Black employees to be a part of it. There's really nothing you can say about the lack of white employees there.
