Jan Null's Moon Shot; Oakland Tribune Tower Love; Assist from Mom; KRON Strokes: Liviakis and Folsom

Jan Null is the local weather pro with the NWS and a cool bud--he took the picture of the FULL MOON last (Monday) night and I'm just freaked out looking at it and I've seen it a million times already; props for Jan.

Birthdays after a certain age are, yes, yearly reminders that you're getting old. That all said, thanks for the mention. If I'm lucky, I'll get an XXL cup of Peets today with the bagel.

I'll go Downtown Oakland and nosh a little in Chinatown --a most underrated zone --with great dim sum places and my cafe oasis away from the troubles of moi and the world. I'll stay clear of the local mess and concentrate less on the bad, bad, earthquake in Turkey --what a tragedy.

I'll sit and gaze at the iconic, (still) Oak Tribunr Tower, a majestic architetual wonder every night lit up and looking as grand as it did a near-century ago.

Mom took me to get a hot dog at the nearby smoke shop up the street on Franklin past the old phone comp. building. Mom worked there for twenty years --it holds lots of memories.

Janis, a sales woman for one of the media gulchers on Battery near the Embarcadero told me the streets are still empty on Mondays and Fridays when the offices let out--it looks like a ghost town. The city in North Beach and The Marina is relatively back post-pandemic but downtown, Market St, and the area near the ball park is still dark and people-less.

If KRON had less than its current 22,000 weather updates, I'd be OK with that.

The new KRON sports anchor/reporter I plugged recently came down to Earth in a sudden, fiery, personal manner, sorry to report.

Damon Bruce update: not any social media postings of pictures of his kid within the last 5 minutes.

That weekend reporter from PIX who likes to sip good wine and laugh and giggle out loud with the ladies caused quite a stir at the Old Ship last week, supposedly a few people were not amused and exited out en masse to Kokkari, where the olives and a drink cost about the amount of a new car.

Vicki Liviakis fav hangout is Kokkari and that alone is worth the price of a '74 Datsun.

Darya Folsom having a lone cup of coffee outside Mel Belli's old office on Montgomery --she had a serious look, a contract look. When she really wants to read the news and inject less giggle-stuff into the newscast, Darya is actually decent. She could be on LA TV in a nanosecond with that gestault but in the Bay Area, it doesn't play. In any event, here's a plug to Countess Folsom for her gracious wit, humanity, and perseverance.

Wink.

  1. Rich, have you posted your thoughts about how 810 The Spread is doing? Jim Rome is growing on me. As a sideline to his sports acumen, He’s into personal motivation gurus - and I can use the inspiration! But hes not too proud to take some ribbing. He allowed caller VicFromNorCal to go on an endless rant against the motivators - Vic doesn’t believe any of these gurus actually get up at 3 am or whatever early hour they supposedly spring out of bed and into a cold shower.

  3. Do you dislike Damon because you don't feel he doesn't do a good job on the radio or are you mad because he's happy to be a dad?

It seems petty to mock him because he sometimes posts pictures of his kids on social media.

We're in the digital age of social media and clickbait but it seems a few times per week you rail on someone because their feed isn't dedicated to their craft 24/7. As E!, Bravo, Hulu and numerous other outlets have shown, people want to watch these socialites on TV.

  4. I noticed no comments here when I am posting this comment, so I thought I would be the FIRST here to wish local legendary media person, Rich Lieberman, a HAPPY BIRTHDAY, today, February 7, 2023! What a great guy!

  5. Darya with her tawdry leanings seem perfectly suited for the world of FOX, either the LA station, the network, or one of the affiliates. What is holding her to SF? I think we heard here that her boyfriend was unemployed so that should give her some incentive to find greener pastures. She no longer has to stay in town for his career, or am I wrong?

  7. No offense meant, but Ms Folsom simply is not an attractive woman. And it seems if your anchor in the business is your looks, she maybe should consider moving on...

    1. Especially in LA.... check out the new KCAL early AM staff, all women at the desk plus Olga Ospina at weather. There is an attractive traffic woman too. A handsome Chris Holstrom is used also.

  9. Happy Birthday, Rich. Birthdays and New Year's celebrations (especially at our age), IMO, are a sign that we have "made it" to another year! Wishing you many happy returns!

Glad you mentioned Jan, and that you also showed his cool picture of the moon. I know that he has had a longtime, and well-respected/much appreciated, presence in the Bay Area's media and meteorological communities. I go to his weather website for information, periodically.

  10. Happy Birthday!

The observation that downtown is empty should be a clue to the BoS to kill any idea about downtown congestion pricing.

  12. It's an old cliche worthy of Herb Caen that that female L.A. news anchors all look like showgirls and strippers. In no particular order, take a look at Colleen Williams, Christine Devine, Pat Harvey, Ellen Leyva, Leslie Sykes, Jovana Lara, Marla Tellez.

    3. Didn't Del Courtney do ad spots for the Trib? humming "da da da, da da dum, in the Oakland Tribune?..." and then later there was a soul-style jingle like "if it was goin' down, and you're around, it was in the Trib.?"

  18. I worked with your mom, Rich, at the Franklin Street location, Pacific Telephone later AT&T as an Overseas Operator. If I recall she transferred to San Francisco, as most of us did, when our office in Oakland closed. She was a sweet lady.

  20. Anybody else remember Vicki's year in Los Angeles with KCOP? I mean, besides Vicki herself? The then-indie station (now relegated to the same status as KICU's Fox-plus status, spent a fortune on a splashy 10 pm newscast to grab some of the ratings. It gurgled and drowned. She eventually returned, good for the Bay Area.
