Justin Allegri Looks Like New Cal Football PBP Broadcaster; Roxy Bernstein Busy at ESPN; Ama Daetz --Kristin Sze Feud at Circle7; KRON/Nexstar Factoid; John Evans Post-KCBS Oasis at KQED; Former KPIX GM, Art Kern Passes; Tuesday Pulse

TUESDAY PULSE...

Justin Allegri is the San Jose State pbp-broadcaster for football. And he's very good.

And I'm hearing industry rumors he is the favorite to becomer the new pbp voice of the Cal Bears; Allegri would take over for just-retired Joe Starkey.

My sources tell me Cal alum, Roxy Bernstein, who was considered the odds-on favorite, is no longer interested largely because he's fulltime at ESPN and is said to be very happy with his national gig and isn't ready to commit to the Cal job.

Allegri is a talented, edgy, and straight-forward broadcaster with network-quality style and substance. He would be a great addition to the Cal broadcast team and he certainly has the chops, take a listen:

*Circle7 Blues: ABC7's Ama Daetz has been annoyed with Kristen Sze to the point where Daetz made it clear to her she resented her "poking around", as Daetz put it to frkends.

sze is not belove by staff and Daetz is among those who can't stand her. Making matters worse: Daetz's co-anchor, Dan Ashley, is a Sze ally. He might be the only one.

*Former KCBS overnight anchor, John Evans, is now a staff announcer at KQED and is having a ball.

it's a part-time gig but it beats the asylum that is present day KCBS.

*KRON and Nexstar will hash out its labor problems because management has super leverage and the other side, hardly any. Furthermore, the SAG-AFTRA is a key cog while IBEW is a wet towel. In the old days, both unions were powerful, now only one is.

Plus, KRON workers, the majoirity who don't appreciate the union, love their gig more than a street fight.

*Art Kern was GM at KPIX moons ago when PIX was magic. He recently died and well-wishes to the Kern family.

*A week's worth of no rain on the Bay Area forecast so I'm counting down to the next drought story and sound bites on that weekend deluge that wasn't good enough for our parched terrain and soggy streets. Tahoe resembled a blizzard and the Napa River was close to flood zone but whatever.

  1. Gavin's probably been letting the water out of the reservoirs again so he can scream drought!

    1. Someone put an Erica Thomas nametag on Pat’s desk at KCBS. Didn’t go over very well.

  2. I noticed Ama is the only anchor who is still social distancing in studio still.

The wide shots looks like it’s boys vs girls with Ama and Sandyha on the right and Larry and Dan on the left.

    1. Thanks for your input, Justin. Again, the Cal HR department has your resumé...and as we mentioned in our previous five conversations: yes, we do have your resumé tape, and we will let you know when we make our final decision.

    2. Thanks Roxy! I didn't know the Cal HR department had you on retainer as a consultant. If Daddy didn't contribute tons of cash to the university, you wouldn't be in sports broadcasting. Small fish in a large pond... err! ...Lake. I heard Ryan Leong applied for the PBP job too. You remember him from your early KNBR days?

    3. I was not Justin but liked him on SJSU broadcasts. Going to miss Joe though, such a friendly guy.

  5. Kristen and Ama are feuding again?
Got some news for you. Neither of them will be leaving KGO. Together until at least 2030.

  6. Ooh...Ama and Ming got beef?? Kristen seems like a real go-getter and very tiger mom-ish in demeanor. Must be that UC Berkeley pedigree. I respect her longevity at the network and anchor bonafides. But her reputation off court seems to always engender whispers. But if Dan Ashley likes her, I guess she's ok. Wonder what Janelle Wang has to say about her?? lol And with Dion Lim currently breathing down her and Ama's neck, I'm sure Sze is steadfastly positioning herself to be at ABC 7 longer than David Louie. It's like an episode of Survivor. She plays the game to win. lol

This seems all very All About Eve-ish as well. 'Fasten your seatbelts..It's going to be a bumpy night building a better Bay Area...' lol

  7. I notice you’re no longer posting any anti-ktvu articles or comments. Did they threaten to file suit?

    1. File suit for what? If they don't like what Rich reports, then they need to look internally and change their behavior.

  8. Will we see a new version of Robin Winston/Anny Hong fight, between Sze an d Dietz??

  9. If all the politics at ABC7 was like Survivor, Kristen would need to win every immunity challenge (aka the ratings book) otherwise she would be a strong candidate to get voted out of the station at Tribal Council (aka the staff meeting).

  10. Entranced by Greg Papa getting in a snit when a guest referred to him as "Bob" (Papa, another sports announcer) Tuesday around 12:50pm or so; would not let it go and the unspoken "you made a mistake on MY name?!? ME?!?" was more than a bit much. Forget the Mike Leach memories the guest was there to share, as they lurched to the end of the segment Greg made THAT the topic and I have a feeling he'll make snide reference to it again in days to come, once or twice or twenty five times.

  11. justin allegri, yeah hes not bad, san jose st, got a deal with 860, the far right extreme talk station, the A's bailed on after one season in 2019 because of all the negative feedback they got. but i predicted if i can say, that roxy indeed probally did want the job, but im sure ESPN pays way more. and he gets more exposure doing football, basketball, and doing some fill in baseball with the A's and the pac 12 network... and if justin wilcox has another bad season, cal might also be stealing san jose sts football coach in addition to their radio guy

  12. Having worked in this business for years, I'll just say for some reason men generally get along together much better than women. I know there are some petty males out there, don't get me wrong, but overall I've seen far more catfights in my years in TV news. Women seem more competitive and more jealous. Often "feminists" blame men for this (as they blame men for everything), saying they learn this behavior from them and feel they have to behave this way to compete, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Men are generally not the ruthless petty ones, women are, and there's no pressure on them from men to behave so destructively toward one another. In most--again, not all--newsrooms where I worked, when there was tension or outright immaturity among talent, the locus of it was generally a woman, not a man.

  13. Bingo, Rich. It's always "All that rain had ZERO impact on the Drought". What?? Isn't something better than nothing?

  14. Just reading about the kpix gm
passing away is sad. Reminds me of the times they would actually have some direction. Not so much.

Sara was dressing professionally at 11PM each night till about yesterday. Wearing some crazy jeans. Really, just can’t with her. Even Jules is a lot better to watch when she fills in for Sara.

  16. If KRON goes on strike...will KGO union members respect the picket line?
    Such the dilemma !

  17. In my experience, women are competitive with each other till after the change of life, and Daetz is only 43.

  18. We used to have top quality play by play announcers in the Bay Area: Bill King, Lon Simmons, Russ Hodges and Hank Greenwald. Greenwald would be in the Hall of Fame with the other three were not the fact that he left the Giants in 1996 after 18 years of doing major league baseball. Greenwald could’ve worked another 5 to 10 years but Larry Baer drove him nuts and he had to leave to keep his sanity. . But we also had some mediocre or bad play by play voices during those years as well; as Bud Foster, Roy Storey abd Don Cline.
