KTVU at Rock Bottom; Sweeps Failure; Disconnect and Loss of Bay Area Trust; Anchors/Reporters Mildew; Mibach Casualty Beckoning; Haener Could be Goner Soon; Holmes Could be on '23 Radar; Eikel Doomed No Matter What; Sunday Spotlight

KTVU is at ROCK BOTTOM.

Wonder they function with any degree of normalcy--it's a testament to the people behind the cameras.

The heart of KTVU's problems; the gist that is at the center of their dysfunction; their disconnect; it's something many of you see every day and night.

The very people that are on the air.

What was once KTVU royalty is now the greatest threat to its very existence. I say that in a general sense because KTVU will always exist just not the way we all thought it would.

KTVU is a certified goner now. The on-air talent has been exposed as complete phonies and frauds. The people that made KTVU; the esteemed anchors; reporters; vaunted news directors; they're either retired, left, gone and hurried out the door and seeking calmness away from the mass desecration.

What you have left is zero to what KTVU used to be. First and foremost, trust. KTVU has lost the public good will, the Bay Area's favorite news station is now fluttering away big time. I used to watch KTVU News by accident, now KTVU News is a daily accident. The talent is abysmal. I'm being kind.

We used to, yeah, trust them. Now we mock them and pity them, laugh at them

Mike Mibach, gimme a break. Gasia Mikaelian? Are you serious? Rosemary Orozco? I've seen more genuine people at a Hayward 7-11. I mean, get real.

And that's part of the problem at KTVU, nobody is real. They're all in their own world and the Bay Area public sees it, knows it.

KTVU used to be news gathering gold-standard --it was the station that garnered both local and national envy; now, it's a certified joke. My oh my, what a complete and utter failure.

Can it get any worse? Oh, take a good look and watch with your very eyes, of course it can.

*The Mibach update: he's on borrowed time, say my sources at KTVU and this was before his "jock strap" jokes. He has LOST the station. Mibach and his crummy smirk were already on everyone's shit list only Mibach made it worse. He came into the job with enormous good will because most of the KTVU staff were fed up with Frank Somerville and wanted change and therefore, Mibach was welcomed aboard but he quickly lost whatever momentum he possessed.

He had a chance to win both staff and viewers alike but he has NO chance now, the damage is done. KTVU and The Firm will most likely have a new face come 2023.

*Julie Haener: I wouldn't be surprised if she were out sooner rather than later. Haener has been mailing it in the last year, assuming she was KTVU's last of the Big 4 but lousy ratings and Haener's own professional reputation have suffered a BEATING.

*Heather Holmes, (I'm still not a fan), is still waiting for her permanent time at 10 PM and her patience might have finally paid off given Haener's lessening juice.

*Watch out: Amber Eikel, the gruesome ND that is only there because The Firm needs a body.

  1. Ah yes, Heather Holmes, the cream finally rises to the top. She has bided her time and it may be paying off. She's not the sweet young thing party girl she started as, more of a notch or two below Haener now. She's entering her matronly TV years and time for her blossom like a rose. Not a patent rose like at a nursery, more of a Walmart rose. Or maybe a petunia.

    2. I have had Heather Holmes grow on me. Now, I tape KTVU and if she is on I watch but if she is not I erase it and quit. She is really really good, no messing around trying to appeal to an audience, just solid day after day. And I think Haener is still good too so maybe they could put Heather and Julie together at 10? I think that would work pretty well. But if not, Heather would really hold her own.

    3. I would love to see her below Haener. 😊😊😊

  2. Another new makeover, how about Andre Sr and Gasia at 10PM and Mike Mibach on weekends.

    1. I could go for that, although I'd prefer Andre and Heather. I used to watch KTVU all the time. Haven't watched it in months, although that's because I thought the story selection was boring rather than because of personnel.

  3. I have a question, unrelated to this thread but one that maybe Rich can address: why aren’t the Raiders on TV in the Bay Area today?! Makes zero sense to me. They remain the 2nd most popular NFL team around here yet their game vs. Seattle today won’t be on KPiX.

Rich - this needs to be addressed. Thank you.

    1. NFL rules. Nothing can air against the home team (Raiders are no longer considered home). So KPIX airs whatever national game in the early window, with no competing game in the 49ers window.

    2. The Raiders are no longer a local team. The Raiders moved to Las Vegas. They became yesterday's news when they left, it's time to move on. Who wants yesterday's paper? Who wants wants yesterdays team? Who want wants yesterdays girl? No one in the world. Or something like that, the Stones nailed it years ago...

    3. 2nd most popular team in the NFL? Where did you get that sat. from the Oakland Tribune ?

    4. Breaking News! Because the Raiders aren't a local team! People that live around here don't care about the Raiders anymore. If there were any Raider fans around here they know wear any Raiders gear anymore. Look tomorrow on victory Monday and tell me how many Raider fans you see with their gear on? You want to see the Raiders? Go to your local Buffalo wild wings or Sports bar. Better yet moved to Las Vegas weakling. Go Niners!

    5. Within the past decade or so, KPIX laid of Shechner, Manny Ramos, Lobertini...while Dana King, and Kenny Bastida left on their own. Hell, why not can all of those KTVU stiffs...and bring back the OGs? I'd sure as hell watch these older, wiser folks than these new airheads that permeate Bay Area TV news these days.

  4. If KTVU had KPIX's itchy trigger finger maybe...MAYBE...some of your prognostications might...MIGHT...happen. But KTVU is a glacier. It hardly ever changes anything unless forced to. That starts with the GM and filters down from there. Need proof? Just look at Sommerville. Should have been cut loose long before he was cut loose. KTVU waited until he displayed insubordination to finally pull the trigger.

So I expect Mibach and Haener to continue to stay past 2023. And KTVU has no cause to cut Orozco loose. You may not like her but your personal feelings have no sway here. She's fine at what she does and that's all that matters as far as KTVU is concerned.

  7. If I was King of KTVU, I would put Alex Savidge and Cristina Rendon at 10pm.

  8. Being associated with Fox undermines KTVU’s credibility. Pretty safe to say most bay area folks would rather have their teeth pulled without novocaine than put money into Rupie Murdoch’s coffers.
Toss all the players around like confetti - see if that improves the product. Smart money says “highly doubtful”.

  9. Hubris, arrogance, is just one step ahead of loss of integrity, because if you think you're better than other people, you know more, then you're going to think, as many leaders have, that the rules don't apply to them - so they lose their integrity. Your reputation is everything and it must be unassailable. The apology may be accepted, but be assured the trust will be denied.

  10. Great moments in local broadcasting! At about 1:20 today, the KCBS shift announcer read an intro to a feature on Joe Starkey retiring as the Cal Pbp guy. The only problem is that the KCBS guy called him "Starsky" as in "Starkey & Hutch."

  11. Maybe it's me, but the slide downhill seemed to start with the Asiana crash at SFO in 2019. I think it was never properly addressed and there has been "Sum Ting Wong" ever since.

    2. Ahhh... Amber Eikel said KT... We Too Low (in the ratings). Then mumbled Bang Ding Ow! after slapping her own forehead. Ho Lee Fook!

  12. Tsk tsk; more Gasia hate. Yes, she's put on a few (well, maybe more than a few) pounds, but she's still a very attractive news reader. She has no more, or less, gravitas than anybody else at the station, and would be an improvement over what's happening in the evening.

    1. She's a butterball. And she is a suck up. And that's the truth. She plays the game well but if new management came in tomorrow she and Heather Holmes would both be chucked out and that would be the right move. But it's Fox so they'll just watch it deteriorate for a good long time before anything happens.Fox-ification. Once the ratings tank they'll replace everyone with the cheapest people they can find. That's the Fox model. KTVU is never going to recover from being bought by Fox. Game Over.

  13. "They're all in their own world and the Bay Area public sees it, knows it."

Wrong. The Bay Area public doesn't watch news anymore. You could resurrect Richmond, Wilson, et al and no one would give a crap. Everyone has a smart phone now and everyone gets news not even from the news sites online but rather from their social media feeds. Which is why something like 25% of the country believes there are really blood sucking pedophile vampires who have children chained up in a non-existent basement in a Washington D.C. pizza joint.

    1. 100% correct and very worrisome. We of a previous generation relied on newspapers, radio and television for what we considered credible information. But social media has no means by which to determine what is true and what is BS. Scary.

  14. Mibach is joking about his jock straps now? JFC. Are we 12 years old again? This epitomizes KTVU’s epic fall from grace. From hero to zero. The laughingstock of Bay Area news.

Btw, someone needs to inform KTVU the Raiders left Oakland nearly three years ago. For the past couple weeks the scrolling bar at the bottom of the screen during sports referred to the ‘Oakland Raiders.’

  15. Your ktvu prime time team:

Jimmy Jockstrap, Botox Barbie, Mumbles (still hiding in his basement) and Jesse “sportballs” Gary.

    Enough said.

  16. KTVU needs to go "Full Fashion" to compete with CBS Five's nightly Fashionista Show...
They even had Betty Yu in a luminous hot pink dress the other night. Going full LA / Fox with the women's fashion.
And, they can do it all standing....

  17. Anyone who is a fan will be able to tell that Jesse Gary is totally clueless when it comes to sports. Even when he's reading the teleprompter to give the impression he knows what he's talking about, it's so obvious he doesn't. Joe Fonzi is better off solo anchoring than putting someone there on KTVU Sports Wrap who has no credibility.

    1. It's absolutely embarrassing. Not only does he botch the names of widely-known athletes, but it's also clear he has no clue and no interest in what he's talking about. When the Niners were in the Super Bowl a few years back, one of the anchors asked him about his plans for the game. He proudly admitted he's not much of a sports fan. Yet for some reason they have this idiot doing sports.

Plus, what's up with those creepy transition lenses he wears? Those things look weird as hell, especially when he wears them in the studio.
