David Louie: A Personal Reflection

David Louie's retirement is geting national recognition, as it should.

Louie wasn't the most spectacular reporter but he had a style, a finesse, and in a low-key type of way, a presence.

Fifty-plus years presence. You last that long, at one station no less, you've done something.

Louie was the last member of the KGO-TV nostalgic days--the Circle7 Rat Pack: Van Amburg, Jerry Jensen, Pete Giddings and John O'Reilly. Growing up in the 70's, his image on KGO was vivid, as were his stories.

You think 70's, you recall Patty Hearst, The Zebra murders, SLA, Gov. "moonbeam", Jerry Brown, --all people and stories David Louie covered and was a part of in a unique way.

And that was KGO in its splendor --the anchors and reporters who made up the roster and were #1 and had ratings bigger than all other stations combined!

Happy Talk En Fuego.

I'm gonna miss David Louie but like everything else, the time has come. It's a bummer, but that'a life.

  2. Very surprise Trixie will allow him to work beyond retirement age. His salary should be solid high and well respected by the station where no one can force him to leave like most reporters these days like Frank and Julie, too high pay, time to retire

  3. Didn't David Louie leave KGO at one time? I kind of remember KGO welcoming him back at one time. I may be wrong but I'm sure someone will set me straight.

    1. Louie left KGO for about a little while in the late 70s, when ABC promoted him to a management position at WXYZ 7 in Detroit. He asked to return to KGO around 1980.

  4. I have only one complaint about David Louie, he makes many other reporters seem pretty lame.

  5. I remember David from when I first met him some 50 years ago as a professional in this once great industry. I then had the chance of seeing and working along side David during my time at KGO, and as usual he did not disappoint. Always a gentleman and a true professional. David, you deserve all the kudos you are receiving and can only wish you a happy and long retirement. It will be great, just wait and see.

  6. Rich, you had to remind us about 'Moonbeam' who blighted California over 4 terms. Now we have "Greassolini" who refuses to give up his emergency powers.

  7. What is so sad is Starantino this morning didnt know the story that was being played behind her at 630. Gayle King asked, "hey that story looks really interesting, didnt hear all of it. What is about" to blonde anchor? She scrolled thru Ipad and didnt even know what was going on?? She tried to blame Gayle?? Good God,please bring in people who know what is going on!

    1. Starrintino didn’t get hired because of her reporting abilities.

  8. The 70's...when California was still California. Respected the world over. Now we're a laughing stock with shitty politicians making shitty decisions. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

  11. I believe David Louie's father owned a small neighborhood grocery store at the corner of 38th Ave and Allendale in Oakland back in the 1960's. His father told my Great Aunt about his son becoming a reporter on Channel 7. He was so proud. Enjoy your retirement, David!
