Something's Gotta Give at KTVU

THEY COME IN AND GO TO WORK.

They have to manage to make do even though the circumstances and work environment is putrid and toxic. You would think a KTVU studio and office complex at The Firm's Jack London Square fortress would be positive and have a cool vibe. You would be wrong.

The place is tense-central. The stress level is huge. The anxiety meter is off the chart. I've said before the staff can't wait until their shift is over and they exit the building. They manage to get the product on the air and somehow put on a newscast. Until they can't, like a recent night when they had no personnel and had to run a taped KTVUPlus newscast because literally no one was there on the premises to broadcast a newscast at 7.

The rumor mill is spewing with talk of a major FOX blowout of key management, including Countess Amber Eikel, the embattled ND who is DETESTED by a majority of staff. How she's able to conduct business with a fractured staff is amazing, I'll give her that.

The absentee GM, who ocasionally takes her lunch break in Walnut Creek to go shopping, has ZERO support from the rank and file because they regard her and her grotesque ND as utterly incapable and incompetent.

It's getting worse by the moment at KTVU.

Something's gotta give.

  1. Women make horrible managers because they are motivated by emotion and are incapable of rational thought. Period.

    1. "Period" indeed! That is precisely the problem. Those without periods don't have those issues.

    2. Amber is an incompetent nightmare but it has ZERO to do with her vagina. I've had wonderful and awful male and female bosses. Our sex organs are not the determining factor. Also you're an idiot.

    3. So the continued success , ratings wise of KTVU, now many years after the departure of Fred Zehnder, is because "women make horrible managers"? You, of course refuse the care of a female doctor who could save your life, because you think she is "too emotional" and irrational?

    4. According to this, the tortured news types are all going to walk out soon? no? why? I can't imagine that any male , particularly a male anchor or on air type would ever go to a store to buy anything, you know, like shopping for clothes to wear on air?

    5. Amber Eikel has no typical female attributes as a manager. She is cold. She has zero empathy for anyone. She has no ability to mentor. We only wish she was emotional. She's dead inside.

    7. And they have smaller brains. A brain a third the size of a mans brain.

    8. I thought it was gay people that had smaller brains.

    9. I was told all my life what wonderful managers women were. All my women managers have been disasters. Mind you, there have been plenty of bad men too, but the women are in a class by themselves. My wife agrees! She's formed great relations with male bosses but finds the women to be petty and back-stabbing. So it's not just a "guy thing," which is what they'll say. They'll also say horseshit like "When a woman is tough and harsh she's a b--ch, but a man's just a strong leader." Yeah, right, no one's ever accused Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Welch, Rupert Murdoch, Roger Smith, Elon Musk, et al, of being dicks.

    10. Women can certainly be good managers, but I think the problem is that in the interest of projecting wokeness, companies are determined to put a non-white or a non-male (preferably both) in charge. If the field is largely dominated by white males, there is a much smaller pool of candidates to select from. The odds that the most qualified for the position comes from the smaller pool of candidates is proportionally smaller as well, hence low quality choices like Amber Eikel become the norm, as we have seen here and at other stations and companies. Women also, smartly, want more home/life balance in their careers, and being the top dog in a company is not conducive to that, making qualified women for the job even harder to find.

  2. No kidding.
Last week, they had a story on rainfall & the drought.
BUT...the video showed water at the sewer treatment plant !
    Idiots...thats not a reservoir.
I guess they feel it's going down the tubes...so they aired it anyways.
    Just fantastic ..

    1. I like the one where the news anchor asked the Cal-Fire spokesperson if the Bixby was in danger of catching fire. Last time i checked cement doesn't burn.

  3. This is what happens when you have bad management and people willing to kiss butt. Eventually the only people left are the crappy management and a combination of suckups and those hanging on til retirement. That would be KTVU right now.

  4. And you know this how? Have you even been inside their offices the past 20 years?

  5. Amber Eikel and Aaron Pero should get together. They sound like they have a lot in common. Although Pero is much shorter.

    1. Trixie could join in. And so could Mark Neerman, except he got axed a couple weeks ago.

  6. Why is so much time and effort spent commenting on this crappy station? It's been in full decline, like KGO, for a decade.

  7. Amber Eikel is a first time news director. Either she'll learn from the mess she's made here or she won't. My guess is the latter.

  8. Poor KTVU Karen. I'd guess one more bizarre scandal and they'll can her. Mostly because corporate is so far away so the scandals are the only time they pay attention.

  9. Genuine question: I'm not questioning the conclusion that Eikel needs to go, but what is it about Fox management that causes people to believe/delude themselves that a replacement will be *more* employee friendly?

    1. Fair question. The biggest issue at KTVU is that there is no plan. Everything is just randomly chugging along. There's no sense of a common purpose, no regard for the building of careers, no game plan. It's tip toe around a nutso news director who is very checked out. EVERY person that goes into her office comes out demoralized. Her biggest message is consistent that no one cares about the work you do least of all her. Everyone is replaceable and she'd be happy for you to leave. So people are leaving. We used to have pride in our work here. It is no longer valued sadly. We don't chase stories we just do basic.

    2. Fox would likely install someone equally ridiculous BUT they would be someone with more experience because they would be from the outside. The Asst ND here has zero experience as a leader and would never ever get the gig. So the hope is that at least someone who has experience actually running a newsroom would come in and offer a fresh start. There are many here trying to outlast Amber before giving up. As you know many have already given up and left. It's going to continue to be a revolving door for the near future as contracts come up.

  10. I wish I had a nickel for every time Bill Martin says, "Good thing we got so much rain earlier in the year." He says it every weather segment. I'd be a zillionaire.

    1. Don't get me started. At least before we had Kyla Grogan in for him from time to time to break up the rambling. I keep trying to watch KTVU but it's getting harder and harder by the day.

    2. And he rambles on and on about things nobody but he cares about. His head is full of trivia, all of it painfully boring, and he just spouts it in a stream-of-consciousness patter that bears no relevance to...anything. He's sad, really, a dottering old man who probably even bores his cat. And they didn't give Kyla F/T. Proves KTVU is run by idiots.

  11. I think Bill Martin is the best TV meteorologist in the Bay Area. I like his presentation and his demeanor. He doesn't feel like he's trying to prove anything and seems comfortable in his own skin. He has a way of explaining the weather that makes you understand how weather works instead of just letting you know if it's going to be windy or rainy tomorrow. He's the only reason I turn on KTVU.

  13. Somebody needs to remind Roberta Gonzalez that Gasia's name is not pronounced 'Gus-ee-uh.' She's said it that way multiple times this morning which I'm sure has Gasia seething inside. I'd pay to watch those two heavyweights battle it out.
