Revolt at KTVU? Natives Have Had Enough

RAMPANT MALAISE

Everyone under the gun. A longtime producer to 415 Media: "If you're anything here, you want out."Another veteran source: "It's the absolute worst working environment I've ever encountered." That person isn't alone.

There's always an abundance of stress in many TV newsrooms. Goes with the territory but at KTVU, it's especially STARK and DIRECT. It's a wonder how they put together a newscast because there is so much turbulence. I've said it before but now, it has reached CRISIS STAGE. Resumes go out hourly, I'm told. A mini mutiny is in effect, says many rank and file folks. The "no-confidence" feeling about the current management regime has not waned and is now at a fever pitch.

The Frank Somerville suspension only made matters worse but it also EXPOSED the MAJOR distrust between the workers--some of them ON-AIR--who have ZERO FAITH in the ongoing mess that involves ND, Amber Eikel and her assistant. It's been reported here many a times but now it's plain out tense and I DO MEAN TENSE. Worse: when you have all this venom, you rally the troops and try to unite only when the troops have NO FAITH in you, well then...Put two and two together.

  1. If you don't like working at KTVU...QUIT. Nobody cares including your coworkers. And it is the same for any company you work for. Nobody cares if you leave.

  2. So true. Sometimes the only response to an intolerable situation is to simply quit. This happened to me in the Semiconductor industry and I never looked back.Life is too short to put up with management crap every day.

  3. KTVU. Owned by FOX
    The network that brings you:
    The Big Election Lie
    Anti-vax COVID Deniers
    Glorification of insurrectionists
    And crappy management

I stopped watching a while ago. If those ratings go down, the management changes. So stop watching and do everyone stuck working there a favor while taking money out of the pockets of FOX. WIN-WIN.

  6. KTVU is the current whipping boy but KGO 7 is far worse with their Building a Better Bag of Shit.

    1. I love that "Building a Better Bay Area" BS. Hahaaaa....I can't stand it. And they always have to ad that DISNEY owns them.

  10. And yet Vacar and Roth still stand. Actually, good for them if they survive this worsening mess.

I wonder if FOX has had other local affiliates in the nation see their nearly entire staff leave their respective stations. If not, then this would not only be unprecedented, it will also show that even FOX isn't untouchable, like so many people claim they are. Add to that, Dominion Voting's lawsuit being allowed to continue, and the Murdochs might have finally run into a bunch of someones willing to stand up to them. The people protesting are using their own Free Speech rights, regardless of employment status, to counteract FOX's own Free Speech. And the people won't stand for suppression or ever reckless metaphors (Ex: Watters v Fauci), let alone being out-messaged into silence.

  11. I've not been in the news/journalism field. If the career is important to an employee, do consider:
    -moving from the SFBayArea or even completely out of California;
-be one of those folks "sending out resumes by the hour" which I read somewhere here the KTVU employees are doing,
-consider the public info officer (PIO) or public relations (PR) fields as some of the on-air personnel have already done over the years (you all can probably name them better than I or may even personally know them); (I recently named someone a couple of weeks ago on here and already forgot who it was.). There are likely other careers in high-tech/internet/communications/company news/info which could use news/journalism skills; but you all probably already know this better than I do.
Good luck to all out there. Hang in there for now but do have an exit plan as it does seem the entire news & broadcast industry is going downhill, following the newspaper industry.

    1. I remember now. Sanaz Tahernia of KRON recently departed the news industry. Prior to that, several others have left, such as Natasha Zouves, who recently (may have) earned a Master's degree in an unrelated field (biotechnology). I suspect there will be others leaving in the near future. That's all for now.

  12. How come you never mention the leader of the chaos? That would be the hugely incompetent, Mellynda Hartel. Like her mentor, Gregg Kelley, she always seems to find someone to take the fall... I'd be nervous if I was Amber.

    1. Such a good point. The invisible management at KTVU is something I tell ya. They hide away both of them.
