  1. Hello

I used to enjoy Christine Craft and admire her. But I have been disappointed by her crude language on this website. Any chance she can be more dignified or is it as you say - she doesn’t know how to play nice?

  3. I agree with you Joanne and I'm usually pretty open and liberal in terms of freedom of speech and expression. Even I choose my wordage --Christine is fine to express herself but sometimes she's a little too gross for my taste.

    1. I agree with Rich. Her talking about the dugout stories was gross

    2. Hm, Rich I have read comments from other posters here much more gross and crude that what Christine has posted. I guess since you post them all I can't say you discriminate, and since most of those posters don't post their name don't know if they are male or female. At least Christine's are relevant, most of the other posters are usually not.

    3. Well, you can't be perfect. I try my best to allow the dudnicks in and they act like idiots. What can I say.

Hi, Christine! Don't be a stranger, sign in under your name. :-)

    5. I posted the comments at 1:43, I'm definitely not Christine, but I use to listen to her show when she filled in at KGO (I still listen to KGO) I liked her show, she is an intelligent woman and her analysis of issues was interesting, I did at times get frustrated with her because she had little tolerance for callers that disagreed with her. At times I would have like to hear from those that disagreed with her, and they weren't all nut jobs, they just had a different opinion.

    2. In a Washington Post from 1983 you mentioned that you had been married to that younger fella from Italy. However, here on this blog you mentioned you were married to a black man previously. *counts on fingers* That's at least two.

    3. I thought that I remember you mentioning here on the blog that you had a wonderful black daughter in law in your life as a result of the previous marriage to her father. If I'm wrong, I stand corrected.

    4. My black daughter is not a genetic daughter. She's a successful , emmy award winning public television producer whose actual mother didn't appreciate her brains and temperament. I did. I never married anyone from Italy. Elizabeth Bumiller wrote the WaPo piece. She doesn't make mistakes.

  8. How long before the 95.7 merry go round happens again? The morning show is crap still. Midday is ok, as is Ratto and Bruce. Evening with Kolsky is a non entity and boring.

  9. Have you ever considered doing a regular "Where are they now" segment where you revisit names from Bay Area medias past and report on how they're doing and what they're up to? Names off the top of my head include Maggi Scura & Doug Moore, Henry Tenenbaum, Gary Radnich, Margo Myers, etc.

    1. The Bone is not my cup of tea --I miss the old KFOG and Dave Morey and KOME and Dennis Erectus. Maybe it's just that some of us appreciate and love old SF radio FM days --not the dreck of today.

      Delete
    2. I've mainly moved off of FM radio with the exception of 106.9 KCBS as an FM alternative to KCBS' 740 AM "feed", as long distance from KCBS isn't an issue.

Being an older guy, I also miss the now vintage music which was on KSAN, KOME, KMPX or stations I can no longer remember. Now, I'll listen to my own recorded library of songs/albums loaded into my cell phone or stream through Pandora or iHeart. I've also currently got a free-trial of SiriusXM satellite radio when driving, but it doesn't focus in on specific artists or music genre as well as the other two.

I also used to listen a bit to the old KYA 1260 AM and KFRC 610 AM, but I was more of an FM radio fan. FM had/has better sound, was in stereo, and had the, then, alternative music with the San Francisco bands whereas AM radio didn't play that music (Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver, Moby Grape, Grateful Dead, etc.).

  13. How does Grant Lodes get so much face time on KRON? He's on every hour at night in one way or another. I just don't get it. He's okay but hardly deserving of that much exposure...

  14. Hi Rich. Tina from Santa Cruz. Are they going to do a reshuffle of morning crew on KPIX? I think Gianna is underused and was great at anchor desk. Ann M seems annoyed she is not on main screen all the time. I like Len, he seems like an affable bloke. Elizabeth C I like her but no chemistry with guy she works with.

Is $$ the only reason KTVU is toxic? For a boss to have that kind of hold over people seems like something out of a bad tv show. In real world bosses who are bullies would not be put up with in 21st century. I know people in tech who lost job for less.

    thanks for blog

    1. Hi Tina--
I think the KPIX AM show is set for now. They just hired Amanda Starrantino and will see it thru at least a year...KTVU is on a borrowed and fragile time with a staff who have NO confidence in the current managers. Any day now, the whole place crumbles.

      Delete
    2. I think I can elaborate a little on No. 2, being I've worked there. KTVU is now owned by Fox, and even before Fox it was owned by a very conservative company. Conservative companies have an inherently hostile view of workers. They are fond of people who wear suits and the C-suite, but the actual people who roll of their sleeves and make the profits come in are looked down on and seen as obstacles rather than assets. That's why they treat the workers like shit, but coddle incompetent people with fancy titles and fancier clothes. And it's the same way with just about any conservative-owned company——Walmart, Amazon, Chase, Wells Fargo, Disney, Coldwell Banker, the petroleum companies, etc.

      Delete
    3. Anne M is pissed because she's been a soldier on PIX for a while and still doesn't have a real anchoring gig, and she's not getting any younger. But she doesn't realize that for her to be a candidate, she has to 1) be more authoritative (her hard news grasp is tenuous) and 2) get a Planet Fitness membership. If she could shed 50-70 pounds she'd be a possible anchor candidate, though there are still no guarantees. Until then, not a snowball's chance in Nevada in the summer.

  15. Last night when I had a break at work I went out of my car and turned on KGO it was about 8:30 and I expected to hear Dave Ramsey, since he was suppose to be in the slot John Rothmann use to occupy. However, Jim Bohannan was on, and when I left work at 10 p.m. John Batchelor was on. Does that mean KGO realize that having Dave Ramsey on KGO and KSFO the same time is overkill. I only listened to the Bohannan show for about 15 minutes, I know he is conservative, but he sounded reasonable, however if they are going to run a syndicated show, why not from 4 to 7, and put John back where he belongs. Any insight you have into this would be appreciated.

    1. Terrestrial radio/KGO/Cumulus doesn't give a crap about you, the listener. I'd say try the Internet. Consider satellite. Yeah, it costs $ but you'll save yourself time and frustration.

    2. And during Batchelor's show last night KGO was advertising Rothmann's show as being between 6 and 9 pm.

  16. Good afternoon. Joel from San Carlos here. What media company throws the best holiday party? I know not Cumulus because they are cheap. I used to work at KRON as an intern when I went to SF State. Darya was known for having a little too much egg nog and having a few nip slips if you know what I mean. I miss those parties:)

  18. Here's something you don't really talk about much....What are your thoughts on the websites of the news stations? I find KTVU's for example, to be an unnavigable mess. PIX is okay and so is KGO. KRON's is another joke. It's not that hard in this day and age to design a news site. Why do so many of them suck so bad? —Ludwig in Piedmont

    1. Because by and large, local news consumers don't read TV News websites. They'll go to the Chron or Merc, TV news, not so much. The websites you described good take.

  19. How does Julie Haener get away with working part-time these days? She's off as much as she's on. I can imagine lots of resentment from others. Also, this morning KTVU had no meteorologist, on this, the day after a HUGE storm. How is Amber not tossed to the bin for this? What happened to the chica from Chico?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because in KTVU's minds, she's considered a tenured anchor and therefore, she's given a pass. Until she isn't and The Firm deems her expendable.

      Delete
    2. I'm guessing, with Julie H's seniority and personal finances, she was able to, both, negotiate or earn enough leave time; or even take some type of leave without pay. At a certain point in life, you've earned it and family/friends can become the major thing in one's life.

On a related note, unless I'm looking for a particular news story, I personally watch a local news station which has an attractive (to me) anchor; Julie H. is one of those anchors. I'll record the 10 pm (sometimes earlier) news broadcast and can fast forward to determine what news stories are on and see if she's on that evening just to see her. Once Sports starts to play during the last "block", I'll typically delete the broadcast at that point if not earlier. I'm only human and me, not necessarily politically correct.

  20. Any thoughts on Kira Klapper?

  21. Hi Rich, love your web site. Not so much as a comment. Back in the old days Talk and music radio was so good. Made you want to turn off the TV. two questions, do you think we need the equal time rule and the rule that a company could only own so many stations? 2 - What about internet radio? Also, any light at the end of the tunnel as far as local radio is concerned?

    ReplyDelete
  22. No way equal time rule will be enacted --lost cause. I've become an Internet radio fan and you have hundreds of options and the programming is very good in most cases...local radio? DOOMED. Thanks Mr. Cox for your kind words.

  23. Just read NY Times article about evangelical christian financial radio broadcaster, Dave Ramsay, who has been sued for wrongful termination and other matters in the firing of his video editor. The editor, based in Tennessee claims he was fired after he wore a mask at work and Mr. Ramsey told him that was a sign of "weakness". and that "prayer" would cure covid-19, and that he objected to any employee wearing masks. Do you think Ramsay radio is a good fit for San Francisco?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hell No! Get rid of this guy. Wish they'd put you back on, Christine. Can't stand financial shows during the week. I miss the old KGO and their great fill-ins.

      Delete
    2. Yes. That man has helped thousands of people turn their lives around financially. Perhaps tens of thousands. What has any KGO host done to better the lives of any of their listeners other than spout their biased opinions? Some of the hosts from the "golden era" even have pretty seedy things in their pasts. Can I get an Amen?

      Delete
    3. I don't think London Breed, the current or past SF Boards of Supervisors, or the monstrosity that is the soon to be recalled school board are a good fit for San Francisco so why the fuck should Dave Ramsey even matter? You should educate yourself and listen to John Rothmann's show when he has Susan Dyer Reynolds on about the corruption in San Francisco. Eye opening.

      Delete
    4. 9:57, so you believe Jesus only loves rich people , do you, and that prayer will cure Covid?

      Delete
    5. 10:10...I've always liked John. Unlike you, I know him and have worked with him many times. I am not a fan of Ms. Reynolds, however. The issue here is about Mr. Ramsay's promotion of "prosperity gospel" and unlawful firing of someone who chooses to protect themselves in the workplace from a killer pandemic.

      Delete
    6. 10:21 Where in the world did you get that from what they wrote? Did you need some of us to explain their point to you? Perhaps over an early bird special at Denny's?

      Delete
    7. 11:32, you mean you don't subscribe to the NYT and have no idea about the lawsuit or Mr. Ramsay's game which is pimping the idea that Jesus wants you to be rich.

      Delete
    8. I have listen to Dave Ramsey for years. For the most part I love his financial advice, I have not followed it 100 percent, but have adopted some of what he advises, wish I had found him earlier, thus improve my financial situation sooner, but better late than never. I'm not religious, although I consider myself spiritual. In all the years I have listened to Dave Ramsey I have never heard Dave say that Jesus wants someone to be rich, in fact he talks about personal responsibility, he said when he went broke, he realized the problem was the guy in the mirror he looked at every morning. He does however not believe that having or pursuing money is evil or against christ, he is a propenent of getting comfortable money wise, but when someone reaches that status then you also should give back, meaning giving to charity. He does say when you start to give you will get back. That is not necessarily a christian idea, seems to me the Beatles said something to that effect, "the love you take is equal to the love you give", some call it karma. I'm not sure about the lawsuit, so I won't comment on that. I can say after listening to Dave Ramsey for more than 10 years off and on I never heard him remotely say anything like "Jesus wants you to be rich". Have you ever listened to his show? He is on 650 a.m. Sacramento station from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on KSFO at night, he apparently is not going to be on KGO, he was on one or two nights, now it is the Jim Bohannan show. As for Dave Ramsey although I don't subscribe to his religious bend, I like him, he sounds like a nice person I disagree with at times, unlike some religious people he does not really preach religion.

      Delete
    9. 12:23 Thank you. She goes off on odd tangents sometimes.

    10. Christine have you ever listened to Dave Ramsay? No? Yes? I would think you would have at least listened to him to make the statements you did. They are incorrect.

    1. CNN is by far the worst. They haven't had a good month. First they have to save face by firing Cuomo. Then just 2 days ago one of their producers was arrested for grooming children and their mothers sexually. I wonder how Zucker spun that on the chyron, if they even reported it at all.
