Class and Beauty: KTVU's Cristina Rendon; "MNF" Crew in Santa Clara; Bad Live Shots; KCBS Spot Overload; Thompson on KGO: No News-Talk; Monday Blues

Cristina Rendon is SPECIAL to me. She's not only a fantastic, underrated anchor. She is a classy person. A true professional who is as cool off the air as she is on the air.

I've run into the popular KTVU anxhor in the Oakland Hills; always has a smile on her face and always gracious.

I wish KTVU would use Rendon more often but I won't hold my breath.

Rendon possesses that rare winning formula: she's very crisp on the air, reads well, and can deliver the news with professionalism and vigor, if needed. At KTVU these days, that's essential.

*THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR: holiday work schedules. The fill-in boys and girls are ready to rumble. The mainstay, after a year off, are busy filling out the party invites and a chance to buy the boss an ugly tie or book they never read.

*The Monday Night Football crew stayed in Santa Clara as opposed to the NBC folks who stayed in SF. Go figure. *A HUGE TV CREW--from London---were in town the other week to do a story on SF's ugly, awful, homeless and drug scene in and around the Tenderloin and City Hall area; a producer called KGO and asked if they were interested in talking to the TV guy, a bigtime London anchor from the BBC. The KGO producer asked the rep, "what's the BBC?" Wow oh wow.

*LIVE SHOTS are integral to a news package and newscast. You would be surprised how many live shots are RECORDED and not live at all. You would think they would teach reporters how to assemble a live shot and make it look good. Truth is, live shots are now LOUSY here and border on embarrassing. A few can handle the chore and are good--the rest? Don't ask.

*KCBS, your commercials ONSLAUGHT are, in addition to everything else, is KILLING you and directing your few listeners to TUNE YOU OUT! The ads on KCBS used to run into four three-minute clusters. Now, there are spots every other minute. It is nauseating and greedy on the part of KCBS and its (Audacy) corporate owner. They still don't get it. *The Mark Thompson FIASCO show on KGO is now nothing more than Thompson taking audio clips from YouTube and playing silly sound effects; there is NO news-talk and Thompson and his schmucky producer should be ASHAMED. What a TOTAL abomination.

NBC NEWS continues to look for its own bayside studio and not use MsNBC and CNBC facilities on the Embarcadero.

  1. Everything you said about Cristina Rendon is 100% accurate, which means that Amber Eikel is threatened and intimidated by her, and will find ways to continue to limit Cristina's exposure and ultimately let her walk out the door.

    1. I couldn't have said it better myself. Once Cristina leaves we'll be left with the usual cast of unlikeable characters: Julie, Heather, Gasia, Rosemary, and Claudine. Lucky us.

    2. DISAGREE. She is basic latina put her on the weekend so you can say you have minorities in your newscast. Nothing special here. Garden variety MEH.

And that's why this was an incredibly stupid move on her part for Amber Eikel to let Kyla Grogan slip away. But treat people like shit, and this is what happens. The good ones move on. The ones who can't do any better stick around because they have no choice. The result: across-the-board mediocrity.

    1. Yes. I expect we see all too much of sweaty Mark Tamayo in his backyard. Tis the season.

    2. Yep, your 10 o’clock news team: Greg Lee, Jana Katsuyama, Rosemary Orozco, and Jason Applebaum. I bet Dennis Richmond can’t even stand to watch this mockery that ktvu has become.

  3. Beauty? I've tried to see it, but no. Not even close.

  4. My favorite on air item from this weekend: Mabrisa Rodriguez calling it 'tool' fog for valley's long standing tule fog that occurs at this time of year.

    1. I can't stand listening to her. It's an immediate channel change when she's on.

    2. Mabrisa is a protege of Rosemary Orosco. Clearly the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

    3. LOL, 12:43! Does that mean Rodriguez is trying to treat the fog like a tool or is she just using teen slang? Now that's a definition for dumbing down a broadcast!

  5. I disagree on Mark Thompson, for the most part. Yes, the sound effects are over used, but he does cover a lot of topics. Has some recurring segments, for the most part entertaining. I do think it would make a better morning show.
As for a lack of "news talk" in general, I think that is partly because of the society we are now in. Everything is text. That said, part of it is the hosts. The KGO morning show, Nikki just talks, and rarely takes calls. Thompson, may not take a lot of calls either, but seems to have more true guests. Does not just have the network reporters to come on for 5 minutes.

  6. Cristina Rendon seems to have a little touch of the old school anchor, which don't find anymore.

As for KCBS, It's all commercials - All Day - All Night - All The Time!!

  7. No LIVE news, FAKE news. All news is suppose to be LIVE unless there is some technical issues. Did Frank slurring on LIVE TV change the LIVE to recorded format incase any reporter start punching the other reporter or screaming like Mike Micah?

  9. Yes, Rendon nice, but don't see the gravitas

    1. That's because KTVU has never let her shine. She's relegated to the shows no one watches. If you put her in a prime time slot and her just do her think I think she would flourish.

    2. I don't understand why everyone on this website gives Julie Haener such a hard time. Is it because she does the 'tsk' thing after a sad story? If she showed no reaction there would be even more people saying she's out of touch and phoning it in.

Is it because she's a rich white woman? Good for her. If you think she's overpaid then blame KTVU and her agent. That shouldn't be a knock on her.

Julie is the most constant and professional person at KTVU. She never gives her personal opinions on social and political issues. Isn't that how everyone says an anchor should comport themselves? She's an inspiration to up and coming anchors, especially female anchors.

She seems likeable and genuinely seems to care about her family from what she shares online. Stop whining and complaining, she's one of the only serious anchors that KTVU has left.

(And no, I'm not Julie. I'm just someone who doesn't understand all the hate toward her)

I've worked with her. While not "unlikeable" she's a cold fish and cares only about herself and her suburban family. She'd stab anyone to get ahead, as most of them would.

In that she's just another news robot. Not horrible, but hardly an inspiration to uo-and-coming journalists. And she's dumber than a doorknob. Up-and-coming journalists shouldn't want to emulate that!

    4. Julie would be OK if she cut out the tsk-tsks, moans and sighs after sad stories.

    5. Agree completely. And she sure is a beauty.

  10. Is there a corporate phone number for KCBS to let them know how shitty their radio station is now. It's really sad to hear this once great station go in the dumper.

  15. "Julie would be OK if she cut out the tsk-tsks, moans and sighs after sad stories."

In all fairness, management probably tells her to do that. They all do it to some extent. Funniest is Mike Mibach, with his sourpuss face and permanently furrowed brow, acting like he's saddened by a story when his facial expressions say Let's just get on with this crap.

  16. Regarding KGO; Thompson is a little different on KFI as Co Anchor tuesday nights with TCJ Jr. John Rothman is so hit and miss Tim Conway JR. can have a way better show. Not so political. Shit gets old and Jan Whal sucks. I would rather listen to an occasional Carol Burnett story, current la police chase or interview with Mr. Lazrus about LA Ports than John. It is a shame its better to turn after dark than listen to Chip and John. Chip you going to to about the Vacc. today? Yep. John You going to talk about the former president somehow? Yep. Go Away your shit is dated
