Cal Football Broadcast on KGO was "Audio Hell"; Starkey-Pawlawski Anger; Fox Delays KTVU Audit; The Bogus Moskowitz "Chat" on KGO is Embarrassing; Don't Invite Dion Lim to Larry Beil's Holiday Party; KCBS Goes Cheap on Sports; Saturday Schmooze

IT WAS real AUDIO HELL for Joe Starkey and Mike Pawlawski at CAL's football game in Arizona a week ago. The Bears had almost half a team of positive-tested, Covid players who didn't even make the game/flight. But there seems to be some quiet mystery back-story to that, I've heard quite a bit.

The broadcast on KGO was a "disaster", as Starkey put it. The sideline reporter, Tod McKim was not allowed on the field due to Covid restrictions. Pawlawski showed up barely 20 minutes before kickoff and the sound from the broadcast booth was DEAD SILENCE, due to an enclosed press box (in Arizona?) and horrific heat. It was 90 degrees at the stadium. Starkey had no stat guy and had to beg Arizona officials to get a spotter.

Today's game against USC (at Cal) in Berkeley had to be called off (until Dec. 4th)--not a bonanza but a disaster.

*The internal investigative team that Fox was supposed to send to KTVU to check out the mood is still coming but was put off until early December; I'm sure the natives will be in a festive holiday mood with The Firm's corporate HR people en masse. Get out the cookies and coffee.

*Heather Holmes is all about Heather Holmes. Which is fine only Holmes attidude and persona sugggests she's a team player. "Bullshit", a station insider telle me. "She's no leader. She's a complete lightweight masquerading as some sort of newsroom icon." I couldn't have said it better.

*Yeah, Terry McSweeney is older (67) and a white guy. Frank Somerville is 63 and also a white guy. So we're now down the official road of hiring people purely based on age and race and gender. My God. I guess talent and experience is not an option.

*KTVU and Fox specifically might be staring down some lawsuits based on age discrimination and it could be a risky endeavor--on BOTH sides.

*GOOD, concise calls from listeners can be discovered but the lack of money (or none at all) means there's no call screeners anymore therefore the dreck you hear on KGO (or in a distance, KNBR) is proof positive that good producers are a goner these days.

*That pathetic and BOGUS Steve Moskowitz "conversation" on KGO makes it appear to be him (Moskowitz) chatting with the host. It is NOT. It's a PAID ad and KGO doesn't say it is, which makes for a TACKY, ill-sounding infomercial. It's especially bad when I heard John Rothmann doing this ad-babble with the tax guy the other night. Why couldn't KGO just use a disclaimer saying the Moskowitz spiel was a "paid" bit? Because KGO and Cumulus has NO SHAME.

*That supreme ad woman on Cumulus stations here had quite a time of it (i'm told) outside The Balboa. She started out at around 3 in the PM and ended up in a car with a married guy (from KNBR) who giggled along with her until the gruesome twosome left the bar. He says "yeah, yeah yeah" a lot and has a fondness for a certain southern Cal university.

*Don't invite Dion Lim to any event involving KGO fellow anchor, Larry Beil. Trust me.

*If you have 43 bucks and want to invest in a blase AM terrestrial radio station, then call Cumulus and ask about KSFO which is about as barren as a whorehouse in Utah.

*KCBS (Audacy) has decided to NOT hire a full-time morning sports anchor and shuffle the two schmendricks that do traffic on weekends --it's all about the money.

  1. I'm sorry, but doesn't everyone know that the Moskowitch add is paid for, he is on other stations as well and have been for years. Seems nitpicking to me.

    1. and he sounds just as bored, tired and disinterested doing his two minute spiel on the EITC now as he did a decade ago

    2. FCC rules do not require a disclaimer as long as it's within a commercial break. Who do you think pays for all those KGO salaries? The laser fund?

  2. It seems unrelated, but the Cal Marching Band did its annual full-band trip (which is normally to the away LA game) to Arizona for the game. What I understand is that the UofA athletic department a couple of days before the game (when it was too late to cancel) told the Cal Band that they wouldn't be able to march at half-time due to Homecoming festivities. They "let" them march their pre-game show, but the time allowed was less than the normal time, so they had to do it at a faster than normal tempo.

As a result, it wouldn't surprise me if the problems KGO had were entirely the fault of the UofA athletics department.

Not at all. Have you seen the people making movies/music/TV shows/everything else lately? You just have to check off the right PC boxes...which change monthly and if you don't keep up you're drawn and quartered by the "Woke" among us.

  4. I'll ask my aunt to see if she can help me get the 43 bucks to purchase KSFO! And find some talent like Rich to host a show!

"Next on 560 - KSFO and 415 Media bring you Rich! Today's topic is Fox 2's introduction of mud wrestling in the news room!"

  6. I hesitate to complain about Larry Beil since he has actual history in the bay area (and not a fresh bus ticket from Fresno) - but dear gawd, lately he seems to have this cranky/constipated look on his face. Plus when the do that silly multi box "chat" about the stories of the day, he just looks annoyed. Is the mood at KGO just getting to him?

  7. No-one expects Heather Holmes to be a "newsroom icon". She's a beautiful woman, eye candy, that reads a teleprompter well just like the rest of them. What more is there? Feigned concern at sad stories?

  8. I have to this day never met anyone who tunes into KGO to catch Cal games. So tell him not to worry about "audio hell" because no-one is listening man.

Ditto the other dumb blonde anchor, Julie "Tsk-tsk, what a saaaad story" Haener.

    1. The “tsk-tsk” act has run its course. It’s “empathy on command” and It’s so disingenuous. Look at her, look at her lifestyle and look at the people she associates with, does it look like she really cares about a POC who was shot and killed, or a POC single mother who died in a hit and run? Irony here is I bet she’s a Karen who’d call the police if she saw a POC in her neighborhood.

    2. I don't care about the POCs either. I'm sick of hearing about them.

And they're likely sick of your whimpers as well.

  10. Rich I have to give you a big high 5 for the use of the term "two schmendricks." Very descriptive and fun to say too.

  11. Wow....I just watched KNTVs nbc bay area newscast and the news is fast paced & double the story count.
Double the news stories compared to KTVU.
Plus they have NO Julie Haener waste-of-time...sad stories.
    Awww what a sad story.

    1. Most of the behind-the-scenes crew that used to run KGO back pre-Trixie and pre-Building A Better Bay Area PC is now in San Jose. That's largely why.

  12. I discovered how Chip and KGO are making money on the side. He has a secret sponsor, the maker of You Know. The sponsor pays him $1 every time he says "you know" during a show. In an hour, he can rack up $150 or $200. I know you're dying to find out what the sponsor makes. I don't have to tell you, you know.

  13. The Moskowitz ads are excruciating radio. It makes the KGO hosts look like jerks, going from articulate spokesmen to shills in a moment. Make it stop KGO. Just run his damn ads like everyone else does. And while we're at it..Rothmann ;stop with the testimonials on the C.Crane radio...it's painful/ We already have radios..what do you think we're listening on.

  14. Not sure why but Larry Beil has always given me creepy pervert vibes, even when he was at ESPN. Not nearly as creepy as Salvador Castaneda from KTVU but then again no one will ever come even remotely close to his creepster factor.

    1. Sal Castaneda is a family man. HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT HIM?

  15. I like Heather Holmes. She doesn't need to be a leader, she does her job very well. I think she is awesome.

  16. re: Moskowitz adverts

I appreciate that Mr Moskowitz is (presumably) paying part of the expense of operating the station. I don't pay to listen after all, so somebody has to be paying. However I concur that advertisements can be "ear-sores", and cause listeners to tune to another station as soon as the advertisement appears. I expect once a listener tunes to KCBS or KQED for example, momentum sets in, & they may not re-tune into KGO for 24 hours or more. Advertising content is definitely a compromise. Perhaps some listener studies are warranted.

  17. KCBS should make Ted Ramey the weekday morning sports reporter. He's much better than Hughes or Raditch.
