Bay Area Posers; No Stars; PIX 3 PM Newscast Factoid; KGO Radio Crisis (Again); Changes Coming to KNBR; Lund Brown Toilet Paper Ode to Papa; KQED News '22 Omen; Chuck Nevius Goes to Ex; NBC Bay Area Internal Issue; Friday Feast

ONE THING I MISS (among other things) is the lack of STAR POWER in Bay Area TV News.

I miss a Dave McElhatton anchoring alongside Kate Kelly--I miss the steady Pete Wilson when there's a calamity and Pete calms us all down. I miss the old guard Van Amburg and Jerry Jensen. Evan White, Tom Sinkovitz, some of the greatest TV anchors the Bay Area ever produced.

Nowadays, we have NO star power. Outside of a Dan Ashley, the Bay Area is left to a few bread crumbs. The market is chock full of POSERS. A sad bit of reality considering the old days when the area was rich with known commodities.

*Had the GIANTS advanced through the playoffs, KNBR/Cumulus would have made close to $2M in both ad revenue and branding deals. If that sounds high, it is but it's the truth too. The Giants lose the NLDS and the 49ERS have a bye week; at KNBR, the loss of MLB and NFL games (this weekend) means a dark two weeks.

*The new PD at Knibber is waiting to HIRE a new nightime guy to replace Mark Willard (who went to FM's The Game)--he's also looking to alter the Morning Show where too many voices overload the zoo; looks like he may remove one of the Irish frat boys. That would save some money.

*KGO Radio: talk about a new round of CRISIS at 810 AM which is only appropriate as the ten-year anniversary of the Dec./2011 massacre nears. As usual, the natives are PISSED because management has NO MONEY and both the morning show and 10-Noon are CRATERING in the RATINGS.

*The concept of a Somerville/KRON marriage has HEATED UP if you believe what the Insiders are saying: I'm one of the chosen but I still believe PIX (CBS) is in the mix.

*That 3 PM newscast on PIX costs CBS NO $$ which is why even if a few Marin housewives are wathcing is OK. TV News pays for a lot of the bills.

*Greg Papa is saddled with a MORON sidekick, a fool, an imbecile lout named John Lund who couldn't lead an Eskimo to an Alaskan ice cube.

*Ronn Owens is retired and living in Arizona dreaming of the days when Mickey Luckoff made studio visits on his show.

*NBC BAY AREA has an internal issue with its ND, Steph Androuny, whose news staff is not that entirely in love with Steph. It's a case of selective favortism between some of the newbies and old rank and file. It wasn't such a big deal but it got big when one of the chosen few got extra chummy with the boss.

*KNBR without the Giants/49ers: like a whorehousse without hookers.

*Lund's giggle after each and every Papa utterance is proof positive that Lund and brown toilet paper are a cohesive combo.

*KQED has not officially announced its plans for a 2022 "Newsroom" launch but it continues to look for staff both on and off air.

*Maybe the reason why they steal content from a blogger: the CHRON is BLEEDING RED INK.

*Chuck Nevius was hired by the EXAMINER which means his retirement from the Chron was short-lived.

*By the way, who the hell reads the EX?

*KCBS: more dead air than a Cass Elliot wake.

*YAWN CENTRAL: Anything on The Game.

  1. Seems like Dennis O'Donnell has fallen off the radar.

    1. @12:54- Yeah, it's sad that Dennis O'Donnell hasn't been reported on anymore. Hopefully he's ok.... Maybe he retired and didn't want people to know about it?

  2. So between the Ming Sze 3pm and Allen Martin's 3pm, the only real question is which do the pets lying on remotes controls prefer?

  3. Please let it be Paulie Mac out the door . . . at least Smurph, when he isn't constantly referencing Yookla, his wife and/or kids, and pop culture in general, isn't bad on his own.

    1. Seems like the odd man out. Murph and Copes . . . a little too much caffeine, but I'd trade caffeine for any more references to the Boss or the Dead.

  4. KNBR possibly altering the Murph and Mac show? I'm shocked. That show has been around for like 15, 16 yrs. They've had a great run, but it might be time for them to change up the KNBR morning show. I wonder if they are feeling pressure from 95.7. Yeah, I understand the ratings apparently aren't there for 95.7, but Bonta and Butcher Boy come in hot and have fresh takes in the mornings. Murph and Mac are ok, and I think I even said one time that they're an institution, but they aren't Bonta and Butcher Boy right now.

  5. Maybe KNBR should consider running the replay of Barry Bonds record-breaking 757th home run. Whoops, wasn't there dead air then? Kind of like how these next two weeks will be.

  6. As far as who the new night time host should be on KNBR, I listened to the Giants postgame show on KNBR last night after the Giants excruciating NLDS series deciding loss to the Dodgers last night, and Dieter Kurtenbach was on. He wasn't bad. His voice reminded me of Matt Kolsky's a little bit, but overall, Kurtenbach was alright. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up getting the job. Can he talk football and basketball too though, as the Warriors and Niners will now be more into focus now that the Giants season is sadly over.

I know some may be tired of me bringing him up but, why not bring back Ryan Covay? Yeah, it sounds like he may be taking a break from working in radio, but it would be cool if KNBR brought him back to do nights again.

We'll see who they hire. This is where KNBR not having the Warriors screws them. There are going to be many nights where the KNBR night time show goes up against a Warrior game.

    1. Matt koski has all the energy of a stiff corpse that's been sitting in a morgue for six months..he should be doing "lifestyle" segments with Ethan Bearman about the latest health foods and diets

    2. WTF has Ryan Covay done to warrant a show on radio???? You must be his PR person.

    3. Otis, love your opinions on the Game, you know more about the station then the suits that work there. I found Colvay, kind of a bored with Damon and Ray and nothing that he said was wow that is a good point, never thought of that. Kind of like Fitz, Mr. know it all doing the play x play. I am no basketball expert other than I love to watch but Fitz never said anything like wow good point. Although Jim Barnett always made good points and learned new things about basketball when he was the commentator.

    4. @unknown stuntman- LOL. Dang.... Yeah, Kolsky can give off that kind of a vibe. It will be interesting to see how long his night show lasts. He really was a fit with Damon and Ratto. Even the callers that have called into his night show have already mentioned that they miss him with Damon and Ratto.

    5. @A's world- haha. I'm not Ryan Covay's PR person. I never met him in real life, but I am friends with him on Facebook. He seems like a good dude.

I think he's good when he's paired up with the right person like when he was paired up with Butcher Boy for 95.7's night show. He has good sports knowledge and he has passion for sports. The only Bay Area team he roots for is the Sharks, but the guy can still cover each Bay Area team as if he's a fan but as a professional.

It just seemed weird that he left/was let go when other people on that station probably warranted being let go instead of him.

    6. @Neal- Wow, thanks Neal, I appreciate the kind words man!

Did you mean Kolsky?..... Yeah, he never really said anything that stood out when he was paired with them, but part of that was because it seemed like him and Ratto were always talking over each other and often disagreed.

Regarding Fitz yeah, even though I think he's one of the better TV play-by-play broadcasters in the NBA, yeah, he doesn't make statements that stand out all the time.

Yeah, Jim Barnett is good. He teaches you the more technical aspects of basketball during games. Thankfully he's still a part of the Warriors broadcast team, even though it's only for Warriors road games. I like Azubuike and Azubuike has gotten better, but he has big shoes to fill.

    7. Otis you truly know less about radio than imaginable.. Its RATINGS Covay obviously can't draw ratings.. 95.7 can't draw ratings it is that simple Why does anything in braodcasting get canceled? RATINGS

SAY IT WITH ME OTIS RATINGS +REVENUE = RADIO.... NO RATINGS NO REVENUE NO RADIO....

      Delete
    8. @11:28- I understand that. It's just too bad that Covay left/was let go. That's all.

95.7 has had a history of bringing guys back that they once let go; Dibley, Whitey Gleason, Steinmetz. Not saying they will bring Covay back, but this station has had a history of trying to correct what some may deem as previous mistakes, as far as letting people go, but then bringing them back in the same role or another capacity.

But yes, I understand the ratings argument even though it's hard to quantify that sometimes when these shows get traction through all of the texts, calls, and social media messages they receive everyday.

    9. No actually determining ratings is rather easy which is why the game sucks

  7. Rich,

Any thoughts on Ray Fosse? I was saddened to hear of his passing, and there seems to be a consensus that he was extremely well-regarded. Personally, I really enjoyed his work on the A's telecasts over the decades.

  9. This may sound weird but Greg Papa and John Lund are better without each other. Yeah, John Lund is kind of goofy, but he isn't bad on the Niners radio pre and postgame shows on KNBR. When he used to be on with Tolbert in the afternoon drive time slot on KNBR, he wasn't great but I mean, he was ok.

When Greg Papa was paired up with Bonta on 95.7, I thought that was a good show at the time. Greg Papa before he was paired up with Lund on 95.7, I think worked with Dibley and others and he's shown that he can work with other people on sports talk radio shows. He worked with Rod Brooks years ago, I think back in the Ticket 1050 days.

Maybe Greg Papa and John Lund might not be as good of a mix anymore.

  10. dieter ''yeah uh huh umm hmmm yeah '' kurtenbach. listen to him. constantly sayin' ''umm humm ummm umm hmm''. just count how many times...36 times in 10 minutes, ''umm hmm umm ummm um humm''.

    1. I really like Kurtenbach - he does a a good job of covering the biggest stories (like the weekend national hosts) instead of just cheer leading for the local teams. The Super Bowl could be going on and Willard would be asking a Giant's prospect how much garlic he likes in his aioli. I haven't noticed the umms - I'll have to listen for it.

    2. Pairing Kurtenbach with Kerry Crowley would be strong.

  11. The Summer Ratings have Murph and Mac almost tripling the morning show at the game. Damon Bruce and company are just a little bit behind the Tolbert gang. Barrett sports media blog has an informative article on KNBR/ KGMZ

    2. @6:02- I agree, too much baggage moreso because of his drinking problem. It would be nice to see him back on the airwaves, but at this point, yeah, he probably should retire.

    1. You must not have ever seen the original "NEWSROOM". It had Mel Wax and some super smart real reporters discussing and analyzing the news of the day in long form. This is not a job for an anchor type, but rather for a substantive, serious reporter.

  14. What’s worse? KCBS dead air or KSCO’s very own Charles Freedman belching, farting, coughing, blowing his nose and complaining about his allergies with a hot mic during commercial breaks? It’s an embarrassment that putz is still employed while the Rich Lieberman show was put on hiatus. MZ: Wake the HELL up.

  15. Just bring back sports phone 680 with Ray Woodson.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed! Sports phone 680 with Ray Woodson was the best sports talk show on KNBR. Ray always respectfully listened and knew how to engage callers. He is knowledgeable about any Bay Area sport or team. He is fair and called ou mistakes or gaffes by managers, coaches or players. He was at his best after Giants games. KNBR screwed up letting him go.

  17. "NBC BAY AREA has an internal issue with its ND, Steph Androuny, whose news staff is not that entirely in love with Steph."

We weren't entirely in love with her when she was at KGO. She has no passion for news. Not a lot of knowledge of it, either. At KGO she learned from the ground up but was given chances others weren't because of her genitals.

  19. I agree with you on the lack of star power. I never cared that much for Pete Wilson, but always loved Mac and Wendy and Kate. Jerry and Van were unbeatable. There is nobody of that caliber today.

  20. What's going on with Jessica Aguirre and Janelle Wang regarding their rings? Jessica hasn't been seen wearing her engagement ring and Janelle sometimes wears a ring and sometimes doesn't. BTW, not keen on NBCBayArea's news format of news at 5, 5:30 and 6. All rehashed. Station clearly has a bias towards nonwhites.
