This Old Town; Greg Papa: Arrogant and a Jerk; Lund Still 'Ha-Ha-ing'; Bill Martin Factoid; PIX's Martin Gets Better; Posers with BIG Egos and No Talent

THIS OLD TOWN

*I TALKED about WAYNE WALKEE, a TOTAL CLASS ACT with a GIANT personality: the polar opposite of GREG PAPA; a talented JERK with an ego the size of SF Bay. Papa thinks he's cool with his ridiculous OVER-HYPED, borderline hysterical 49ERS TD call, he should really be ashamed. Papa s BIZARRE daily change-of-voice (he sounds like a little girl gargling) doesn't make any sense and sounds downright SILLY. And Papa's MEAN STREAK at KNBR continues to baffle longtime producers.

*The whole new "AUDACY" deal; ENTERCOM's re-branding (KCBS, 95.7 FM, 'The Game" here and all other of its national stations) is mere window dressing. It's really a national broadcast outfit attempting to sell terrestrial radio into the modern world of podcasts and music, only the people it is trying to kiss butt to, are not impressed and are too busy listening to thier smart (ass) phones.

*LESLIE GRIFFith, I think I told you one time, literally took her high-heel off after a nightly newscast and HIT MARK IBANEZ in the KTVU parking lot. It wasn't a pretty sight, especially for Ibanez and the beginning of the end for Griffith.

*JOHN LUND gets paid extra to laugh at every Papa joke; I can't think of any other reason why Mister Facelift chuckles and chuckles at Papa even when there's NOTHING TO CHUCKLE about.

*STATE-RUN RADIO for the GIANTS, KNBR is all just freaked out. The mutts who do radio there are incredulous that the lack of fans at the games could be so pronounced. Well, when you still have a pandemic; when Downtown SF is still a ghost town; when there's no action near the park, yeah, I can see why nobody's coming to the ballpark. And I'm no genius as you know.

*YEAH, I'm down on Papa --but there's times when I'll give him credit too. Am i not supposed to call one out when they need to be called out? Nope.

*SEE, I CAN'T STAND people with HUGE EGOS who think they're god's gift to the world and act like total FLAKES and FAKES. Like a few people I know too well.

*I'm not exactly Mister Sunshine either; in fact, today, I think I'll head to Kasper's hot dogs and RIP MYSELF.

*BILL MARTIN, the soon-to-be-retired KTVU weather guesser, doesn't "converse and talk to his audience." THAT'S BS. Martin is more incoherent. When you "talk" to the viewers, you have to make sense. Martin hasn't made sense for KTVU for years now.

*RAJ MATHAI has been subbing on KGO RADIO a few times and spewing out more BULL crap than a Madrid waste factory.

*TODAY'S POSERS in this city could understand a valuable lesson by reading some of the comments about the old KPIX and Wayne Walker posts. YES, they were PROFESSIONALS and they enjoyed working and YES, they had huge EGOS, BUT...they were TALENTED and COOL and they didn't take themselves seriously like the SCHMUCKS we have today in the BAY AREA.

*I'm beginning to have a different opinion of ALLEN MARTIN which sacres me because I actually think he's better.

  1. You blog freely about Leslie Griffith's assault yet you censor any comments making factual statements that Pat Thurston put her bra size on her resume when trying to break into local radio. Crazy.

    1. Yet thousands listen to her and take her word as gospel. Sex sells huh? Oh wait, Trump! Trump! Republicans! #MeToo!

      Hypocrisy.

  2. - I would really like to know how many of the 49er Faithful are willing to unmute themselves and pan Papa as much as RL has. Most of the Faithful still miss his predecessor Ted Robinson. It is a sad reflection of how ignorant management within an NFL team is toward the fans, even if Jed York is actually among the better listeners among NFL owners, which isn't saying much.
    - KCBS Radio is still paying the price for CBS' short-sighted move to sell all of its radio affiliates, instead of trying to transition them into the digital world. Sadly at Black Rock, Big Brother literally is still watching as the Redstone-led Board still has to pay the full-of-it couple that is ex-CEO Les Moonves and continuing BB host Julie Chen their ongoing buyout and contract, disrespectfully.
    - I do remember the bruise Ibanez suffered when the psycho burst happened. Thankfully, it was near the end of Griffith's stay.
    - Lund is the biggest waste of air time on Bay radio. And it stinks worst than all the garbage dumps combined.
    - Yep, no change in the world of Lockstep Larry. Thankfully, Zaidi is still allowed to continue to improve the product on the field.
    - I have Greg Papa Burnout. Of course, I also have Brady Burnout, but are any of the NFC contenders going to produce a pass rush against a Tampa Bay team whose O-line is actually even stronger than their Jon Gruden-coached 2002 team? Local ratings stay strong against the Burnout(s), unfortunately.
    - Huge Egos, Gift to the World? That's exactly how Pelosi's predecessor John Boehner describes the guy now known as Fled Cruz. Makes the terrestrial radio mess seem miniscule.
    - I have an ex-high school classmate who still needs his Kasper's fix every now and then.
    - Years? How about even two decades of incoherence in the case of overdue-to-retire Bill Martin.
    - That's too bad that Mathai is pretty stuck in RL's doghouse. That used to not be the case. From Respect to Rodney, just like that.
    - The only criticism toward Walker - and what the Bentley took advantage of in the ratings, as well as Ibanez & Martin Wyatt to a lesser degree - was that he had little or no regard for the local sports communities. At the beginning in the 1970s, Walker took on a few fitness challenges, but when Bill Walsh took over the 49ers, Walker no longer had time for that, because the Niners Joe Cool-ed their way to the top of the football world.
    - And finally, well, the VDLC Saga must have been Allen Martin's wake up call. When Martin gave Ken Bastida a week-long break, I saw no clear facial language issues with Elizabeth Cook. Cook & Martin acted like their typical professional selves. Most of the PIX personalities may rub RL the wrong way, but that's a byproduct of the mumbling middle management that doesn't know what it's doing.

  3. A few years ago, a story appeared that said the 49ers broadcasting domo wanted Gregory Ego when he became available. Hence, when Poophead pissed off Mark Davis and got fired, Teddy Ballgame was on the VTA out of Santa Clara County. The fun and games started when sports marketing know-it-all Andy Dolich wanted Teddy Tennis to take over the broadcasts from Joe What A Bonanza when he was hired by the 49ers. Will never forget What A Bonanza's tearful farewell on the air after a game. Actually, the 49ers broadcasts haven't been the same since Lon Simmons ended his reign in 1989.

The Giants are the Giants. When Horace Stoneham ran the team, marketing was limited. Baseball, good or bad, sold itself. Nowadays, the marketing is off the charts. Panda hats. Barry this and Barry that. A forced campaign to get Krukow and Kuiper inducted into the broadcasting wing of the Hall of Fame, which fortunately fell like a ton of bricks.

Wayne Walker was OK. He was a damn side better than the bozos behind the microphone these days.

  4. "Audacy" sounds like an audio program on the computer. Wonder how many millions they spent for that.

  6. One news anchor that I think has always been underrated is Richard Brown at ABC7. Long gone now, but he coanchored with Terelyn Joe back in the days. After he left San Francisco, he appeared with one of the Spokane, Washington TV stations as anchor. I believe he's retired now. Nice guy. I wonder if he got extra hazard pay while working with Terelyn.

  7. Kasper's or Casper's? Casper's hot dogs have that great snap when you bite through the casing ... we can buy 'em in the store nowadays. Kasper's? -- I didn't think there were any left.
