MONDAY MINUTIAE
YES, the story counts on TV News are much less these days and will erode further. Call it a sign of the times or just further proof of a marginalized news product and dwindling audience. If the present environment continues, the ad people will have to rethink their TV News play, whatever that is today.
*Dion Lim is now far and away the leading contender to move from the weekend to weeknights on KGO (ABC7) as her growing influence and popularity take over. She now gets MORE fan mail at Circle7 than anyone else, including Ama Daetz. Dion will probably either replace someone soon, some woman who thinks she runs KGO. Maybe she once did, today? No way.
*If NPR builds a bayside studio and office in the city, they're looking at either the Embarcadero or the area east of the Bay Bridge. Even in this pandemic economy that's a lot of moolah. Then again, NPR has a good money source: the federals.
*At KPIX, a reporter who wears a hat and thinks of himself as an up and comer was downright giddy to draw an assignment in Walnut Creek. I didn't know they do MOS interviews because like every city and town in the Bay Area (and country) the Creek is largely empty.
*KRON reporters have been told to not only keep all receipts while on the clock but take a selfie of the area they report from. Sounds like Nextstar might be really trying to sell the place. To who? No clue. But there will be interested parties.
*Speaking of PIX, I've become a huge fan of Juliette Goodrich and Brian Hackney on the weekend. They seem comfortable and have developed a bona-fide chemistry. With weather guy, Darren Peck, the CBS5 weekend news is can't miss Saturday-Sunday content. Wait a minute, no can't miss, that's too strong, maybe worth your fifteen minutes or soo.
*Hackney seems to read better and yes, not take himself too seriously these days.
*Goodrich is just plain solid.
*In the old day, NBC Bay Area's weekend anchor, Terry McSweeney, was sort of under-used, now he's all over the place. Not necessarily bad, but a little late to the party; maybe the ND who keeps poaching more ABC7 folks down to San Jose, has seen that McSweeney's light gets brighter.
*GROWING BUZZ: KTVU's formidable reporter, Elissa Harrington, more and more becoming a star reporter in the field. Harrington writes real well and lets the story be the story. She's also good at keeping a brisk pace and looks and sounds network quality. I have no idea why KGO let her go but her win, their loss.
*As much as I needle KTVU for their tacky sound/look from home studios, it's more a FOX thing, you'd think they'd work on technical issues involving their Bay Area O and O.
*Rumor mill: Is Andre Senior headed to South Florida? Think so.
*Used to love KCBS tonsil, Jim Taylor until Taylor fell in love with his voice and inserts himself way, way too much in actualities. Maybe Taylor thinks he's Mark Thompson.
*KCSM on rainy Monday -- all that's missing is a nice glass of merlot and Cuban cigar. Now get me some Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
*Yes, Ray Taliaferro's KGO Radio NYE/eve shows at midnight with Vernon Alley and the sounds of Duke Ellington and Count Basie.
Did anyone catch Dion Lim v Chesa Boudin last night? MEOW! Who wrote Dion's "questions", anyway?
ReplyDelete> She now gets MORE fan mail at Circle7 than
ReplyDelete> anyone else, including Ama Daetz.
I often wonder how people know stuff like this. Do they sit there and count every day? I doubt it. They don't even have enough people to check facts anymore. They broadcast stories that are already out of date...a quick check on Google gives you the latest and their copy is a day old and a dollar short. Half their copy doesn't make sense and is grammatically a mess. And they're counting pieces of mail???
I like Dion Lim, but one thing that always sticks out to me is a rather strained look on her face when she talks. She doesn’t look as natural or as comfortable on air as the others. Does anyone else notice this?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else noticed the new western news anchor for PBS Newshour, Stephanie Sy ? She’s so good, I wish they’d make her lead anchor.
Stephanie Sy has actually been around for quite a while. She was a reporter for ABC for many years, and even co-anchored ABCs overnight news show, World News Now. She is undoubtedly a total HOTTIE and I agree with your premise that she is WAY under utilized!
DeleteDid you see Dion Lim interview SF DA Cheasa Boudin last night?? WOW, she was on fire!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad someone finally roasted him. Crime is the worst it's ever been in the city. Chesa cares more about the criminals than he does for the citizens of San Francisco. Sure, I understand what he stands for on paper and it makes sense the system needs an overhaul but if it's coming at the cost of our safety then he needs to pivot and protect us before he protects the trouble-makers.
DeleteYou did not mention that KRON4 showed historic Rose Parades from early morning on January 1, 2021 until 2 PM in the afternoon. If you know, they did NOT have a Rose Parade this year
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I don't like Dion Lim at all. Her attempts at banter and small talk are embarrassing sometimes. It's obvious when she has no idea what she's talking about.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, as someone pointed out, I enjoyed her ripping in to Boudin last night. Pleasantly surprising to see those claws come out.
But I'll take Ama Daitz any day of the week over Dion.
Did anyone else's jealous cold heart sink a bit when Cristina Rendon announced her pregnancy on air over the Christmas holiday? I wish her the best, of course, but grrrrrrrr.....
ReplyDeleteAs a viewer of Good Morning San Jose back in the day it's great to see the renaissance of Terry McSweeney
ReplyDeleteI'll bet lots of South Bay viewers like seeing a steady, familiar, trusted face get a higher profile
I agree with Rich's review of Goodrich, Hackney, and Peck. They work well together, and Brian has lightened up recently.
ReplyDeleteI could look at Dion Lim all day, quite the hotty!
ReplyDeleteI like Goodrich and Hackney a lot. But can do without Peck. It's just the weather, not an academy award announcement. And, he's often wrong. There will be no rain this year. Because you want it doesn't make it so.
ReplyDeleteJustine on KRON is the BEST new person ever. Beautiful and real. Love her.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely agree with you on Elissa Harrington. Solid and experienced reporter who worked her way up from KGO Radio and Sacramento TV. Hardworking and dedicated, she also looks and sounds great. I've long thought she was destined for the big time.
ReplyDelete"Dion Lim is now far and away the leading contender to move from the weekend to weeknights on KGO (ABC7) as her growing influence and popularity take over."
ReplyDeleteMore than Ming Sze Ping Chow? The Empress of Beijing must be furious! How dare someone best her!!
Man Rich, While I agree with you pretty much all the time, I just can't like Juliette Goodrich. She just gives off that vibe of thinking that her shit doesn't stink, to coin an old southern phrase! She things she is "Miss it", when she is clearly an over the hill MILF. And while I agree that Brian Hackney seems to have softened up greatly as compared to what he used to be, a pompass ass, I still don't care for him either. NOW, getting on to someone who is an ALMOST total HOTTIE, let's talk about Dion Lim! I say "almost", because of her painted on eyebrows that are almost never straight. One side is always crooked as compared to the other side. And they are too big. I will never understand what makes women pluck out their eyebrows, and then paint them on. Do they really think they look good then? But Dion Lim is so sexy with legs that are just creamy smooth. While her star is rising, so is mine!
ReplyDeleteAs a KNTV "grunt"...I'm glad to see you giving props to McSweeney. He is a really cool dude...a great "locker room" guy. We have a couple of long-time KNTV photogs who say that he was one of "the funnest" reporters to work with back in the day.
