Ashley Moonlights on KGO Radio; Schmoozes with Sammy Hagar; SF Downtown Ghost Town; Wednesday Mid Day Nosh

DOWNTOWN San Francisco looks like the day after the world ended. How anyone can get into the "Christmas spirit" is beyond me but I'm a different breed (insert joke)

Dan Ashley had a rather remarkable morning. The KGO/ABC7 anchor was filling in for Mark Thompson --Ashley interviewed (by phone) Sammy Hagar. The Bay Area, former Van Halen legend was a cheery self, mostly plugging his Cabo-Wabo booze and Christmas-Santa tune. I never knew Hagar had a warm side.

*Ashley, by the way, had an interesting earlier take (non-Hagar)--speaking about Covid-19 travel, he said to news guy, Bret Burkhart, "fortunately, we don't have to take a bus." Way to appeal to the Greyhound demo, Dano.

*As I mentioned, much of the Bay Area looks like a ghost town. Everyone seems to have split the scene and go home. For what? To spend time with family, that seems to be the clubhouse leader. But what type of enjoyment? Between the masks, lack of toilet paper and nothing to do expect to watch old movies and gaze in to fake Christmas trees, what's the wow factor? This is a miserable year. I'd be the first one to wanna go into the news studio and broadcast the news. Good old secular Rich.

*Could you imagine what the hookers are going through? 2021 can't come fast enough.

*A veteran TV guy told me, between Covid and the holiday, "it looks like 'Armageddon here." Yeah, as I said, what's to celebrate? Our luck, we all get a once-a-century pandemic. Our luck. A lost year. Many moons from now we'll have something to tell our grandkids and friends.

Hey rich great site. A little off topic here, but the 49ers just signed Josh Rosen. Is he the first Jewish QB for the franchise? I know #79 Harris Barton was a proud Jew and a hell of a tackle, but off the top of me head I cant think of another? I wonder if the NFL can get kosher balls for Josh Rosen. Thanks as always, shalom.

    1. John Frank wasn't a QB, but he had a good career with the Niners before becoming an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor. Frank, at the Tight End position, played on the same line with Barton.

Nice question Yosef. Terry Bradshaw was a Jew. He even wore a Yarmulke under his helmet. Before he was the Blonde Bomber he was the Yarmulke Yardster. But the name did not play well in Pittsburgh. Too many gentiles in steel city I’m afraid.

  3. - Too bad Ashley is too busy with his No. 1 job. Anybody is better than Mark Thompson unincarnated.
    - John Frank was the Tight End Man between Russ Francis and Brent Jones. I remember his playing days at Ohio State. Part of the 1984-85 Rose Bowl team. Frank knew Jones was going to surpass him fast, so off he went with his medical career. I believe Dr. John Frank is considered an Ohio treasure in transferring from football star to respected physician. Still, pardon the pun, cool that Frank was the lead tight end for the 1988-89 Super Bowl Champion Niners. Outstanding blocker, especially when Joe Montana was finding Roger Craig, Jerry Rice, and to cap it off from spotting John Candy 92 yards earlier, John Taylor for the winning score with :34 to spare.

    1. John Frank was a very good tight end, and I doubt he left the 49ers because he was worried about Brent Jones. He decided to take the long view, so when he had the chance to go to medical school, he took it.

  4. 2021 can't come fast enough...said the hooker.

Sammy has a show called Rock and Roll Road Trips on AXS TV. He travels around and interviews other musicians and then performs a song with them. Good show, check it out.

  5. You can blame KGO hosts like John Rothmann for why SF downtown looks so deserted. Their nonstop, doom and gloom, fearmongering about Covid has led to needless panic. Could you imagine if in Christmases past people had decided to stop enjoying their regular lives because some 90 year old lady in a nursing home somewhere died from a deadly strain of the flu? It's nuts, but thank your KGO hosts for whipping up the hysteria.

  6. Hey Rich thanks. Even though we may see things differently, I still find you a compelling read.

BTW with the holidays we get to see tv stations "B" team doing news. These are the ones that they have future hopes for. I just wonder what the ND's see in them. (ex. the Gottschalks cosmetics cashier that does weekend mornings on KGO 7.)

  7. Rich,

Sammy is one hell of a nice person and the world needs more of people like him. He is Goofy at times, but never full of himself. He came from humble beginnings and is very philanthropic.

Sam is an Angel on earth. God Bless you Sam and Kari and the family!

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!
