Kristen Sze can't win.
The KGO (ABC7) veteran anchor is the center of attention at 900 Front: seems some of the rank and file are pissed because Ms. Sze tends to strut around and display power. I'm paraphrasing but there's a feeling that she's (Sze) too mean and sullen; that she's a full-out diva. I don't think that's the case at all.
I think it's more a tough woman who is dedicated to being tough and not namby-pamby --I think it's a case of a veteran lady, an Asian TV News journalist, making sure her presence is known and she doesn't have to hide and be quiet.
It's a double-edged sword, a strong woman in a male-dominated industry and Sze obviously doesn't take that crap. Good for her, she shouldn't. If she shows fierce independence and savvy, she's called a bitch. If she allows petty jealousy by angry people (probably men) to overtake her, then she's playing into their hands. So in reality, Sze is in a can't win situation.
Screw that!
Sze doesn't need me to tell her to screw those mutts that are ticked off of her status at KGO. She's earned her stripes, whether she's a woman or a man. At this stage of her career there's bigger fish to fry. I have generally liked Kristen Sze's body of work. I continue to feel that way. Is she perfect? Is anyone? Case closed.
To Ms. Sze: don't let the bastards get you down.
It is very difficult to think of any KGO 7 news reader as a “journalist”. They are cartoons at best. Kristen Sze is right where she belongs. She is the token Asian among a cast of really disgusting people who have no business on television. If I was Mike Nicco I would be embarrassed to be associated with that group.

Not sure how her being Asian and a woman has anything to do with this, but I guess that's the world we live in these days.

DeleteI've worked here/with her for years. She's really, really good...and though not a back-slapping "How ya doin'/how's the family" or giddy sorority-girl type of person, I've never had a problem working with her. She doesn't have to be my friend (she isn't). We don't have to hang out (we've never done so). But she's a pro. She knows what the hell she's doing. And in this day and age of TV news, that's all I can ever ask from my colleagues.
DeleteLooking at her long face proves one thing....do not mess with her. Adding on she must come to work each day not letting anyone film her house proves what a witch. Only credit is she add pressure to Ms Natasha with office boycott forcing her to leave.

ReplyDeleteThough I never worked directly with her, I did work there when she was there. I never found her difficult and barely noticed her most of the time. She didn't seem like an obnoxious sort, a la Larry Beil. But who knows? Maybe people are just too sensitive these days. They'd better not put up a statue of Ms. Sze. Someone might tear it down.
