40 Years Ago Tonight, The Evolution of CNN. I Remember.

THIS IS CNN, exactly 40 years ago tonight, the very first broadcast. The birth of cable news | The Spokesman-Review

Ted Turner's TV cable dream evolved with Lois Hart --who'd have thunk it would last this long? And become this giant TV Cable behemoth its become today? No one. Including you and me. Maybe the olny one true believe was Turner himself and good for him. Then and now.

No matter what you think of CNN --and goodness knows, there's a lot of pro and con to chew on, it's impact on the TV News biz has been monumental and forever changing. IT has managed to become totally ingrained into our way of life, both a technological and cultural wonder.

June, 1, 1980, a warm night, I was at the Punchline in SF --a Sunday evening, the launch date of an American TV phenomena and the date small pox was eradicated.

40 years. Wow.

  1. If Ted Turner were dead he'd be rolling over in his grave after seeing the albatross it has become.

  2. Lois Hart and Dave Walker, married in real life, both top notch in their careers...

  3. I remember on the cable box punching a channel saying "Coming Soon --- Cable New Network" - I didn't think it'd last. Here we are 40 years later. A year later MTV made it's debut and it was great until they started putting the garbage that's on it now.

  4. These 24-hour news channels like CNN (US version), Fox and MSNBC have probably done more harm than good.

  5. If not for long term, unbreakable contracts with airports, CNN would have fully deflated long ago, and be discarded, the flat front tire it has always been. Rancid pablum for all those emptyheaded Liberal Drones.
