I'LL BE LIVE-BLOGGING late this afternoon and into the evening and night so if you have any questions (all media and it doesn't necessarily have to be coronavirus coverage-related) ask away --Name and City, please, as always
What’s up Rich. I’m about to go from ashy to classy. After this whole corona thing is over do you think we will see any change I. Ownership from any Bay Area tv stations? Ashy Larry, Marcy son, what!
Rich, we are all trying to do our part to prevent this virus from killing all of us.But all this constant unnecessary radio coverage & blaming Trump or whoever &all the blabbing by Nikki Medoro & Rothman after having 24/7 TV cable coverage is just awful. To see & hear these nothing reporters go on & on & interview one doctor etc. while they do NO SHOW PREP re what is happening today is just gross. So sad even.
I agree. And yes, it's worse when there's a legitimate crisis taking place and it's depressing to watch. I get a lot of crap for writing about this but then I get posts like yours and then I feel justified.
Perhaps you should practice some selective viewing and listening. I don't have a tv I get my news from the internet and the radio, so I welcome John Rothman and others, I often listen to Tom Sullivan 12 noon to 3 p.m. 1530 Sacramento, he is conservative, but a reasonable one, I like his personality, and I like to get a different perspective.
Hi, Rich! Love your blog! Question: when is KRON going to end? It's just so sad to see how much it has devolved since they stopped being the NBC affiliate. How are they making any money? Thanks! John, San Mateo.
John, they exist because, for one, they are in a top 10 market so they make money off ads. That's a lot of money. But yes, I share your take--they are flat out embarrassing. And they get worse yet, sickening.
Did you see KPIX's news this evening where they came on after Trump made a live speech *approving* Newsom's request for major disaster declaration and said that Newsom has "requested" said declaration. Apparently they didn't know what had just been on the air before them.
Rich To get people's minds off the mishandling of the virus in Trumpville do you think a station could run a segment for a couple of hours each week of old radio shows from the 30's, 40's and 50's and make it work? I really enjoy your work Luke O'Brien. San Mateo
Thanks Luke, actually there is a radio station that does that now, 860 AM, "The Answer" late night --I think if you go to their web site, they have the schedule...I don't like Salem Broadcasting and especially its right-wing, ass-kissing staple of hosts like Hugh Hewitt and Mike Gallagher, but the old radio shows are cool.
If you have a computer go on Utube and you get clips from a lot of Johnny Carson shows, still the best late night host. I know it is not radio, but it is great entertainment.
The best monologues no matter how dated followed by his golf swing, Carnac the Magnificent, the Private Parts scare, James Brown & Judy Garland within a two-year period, Alpo dog disobeys Ed McMahon so guess who fills in and laps it up, George Gobel making Dean Martin spit out his drink after asking about black suits and brown shoes with Bob Hope joining McMahon in guffawing, Charlie Finley's disastrous appearance during the 1974 NBC-aired A's Threepeat World Series run in LA (just ask Doc Severinsen how much Carson couldn't stand Finley, unlike fellow NBC stalwarts Hope & Martin), all the future superstar comedians appearing even guest-hosting, and that final week in 1992. There will never be anybody like Carson. Proof is in how much we miss KRON's NBC years.
Why do I see Bill Martin at home tonight doing the weather (on a terrible connection with a light blinking in his face) but this morning I saw Rosemary live in the studio. Do the bosses at KTVU only care about Bill Martins health? Whats up with that? Either you're letting people work from home as a policy or you're not. This looks like preferential treatment for one weather persons safety over another. What the hell is Amber Eikel thinking? If Rosemary gets sick I hope she sues. This is horrible to watch. Shame on KTVU.
Don’t know this is the answer, but consider the possibility that Rosemary’s home location or circumstance doesn’t allow for a remote connection technically. Perhaps a houseful of crying babies that can’t be relocated easily. Those can take longer to overcome.
Her children aren't that small and all you need is an internet connection. Sorry but that's not the answer. Also she is married and the last I heard fathers were capable of watching their children too.
Dear Lord please don't leave us with just Bill Martin. I need Kyla and Rosemary the weather hotties in my life. We deserve a break oh benevolent one. Spare the attractive women. Thank you. Amen.
OK, it's 3/24/20 and Rosemary O. appeared to be broadcasting from her home. Things to be considered are: -does the employee want to telecommute/broadcast from the home; -does the station have the equipment and internet/radio/tv bandwidth to do so (her video appeared to be non HD/low-quality, btw); -as someone else mentioned, is the home location conducive to doing the broadcast (a station doesn't have an unlimited number of satellite dished vans to go to every anchor's homes); -a station will have a limited amount of "I.T." or engineering staff to get all the employees on-board to do a home broadcast. It takes some time to get this all accomplished. Again, it's not a audio-visual satellite-dish van being parked at each anchor's house. Yes, it can be done over the internet but not everybody's home has a good location with a good internet connection unless the station (KTVU) wants to ensure it's working right (takes time & maybe money).
Anyway, Rosemary was broadcasting remotely (from home) just a few minutes ago.
The Nikki Medoro Show is just bad... constant rambling, always needs to interject husband, kids, etc. I know, John Rothmann does the same thing with family but I guess I am more forgiving when the talker actually has substance and talks about issues with expertise. Nikki really is not an expert at form or substance. And Bret, the newsman - I HATE when someone who is supposed to know answers says "I think so." Your job is to KNOW SO. What say you, Rich? This show is under the guise of "local morning show." Uhhh, yeah - no.
When Bret is on with Nikki, he is not in "journalist" mode, when they are bantering back and forth, so I think it is okay for him to say "I don't know", when he is reading the news it would not be okay. All hosts pretty much talk a little about their families, Armstrong and Getty did, Ronn did or does, Pat does. I think Nikki's problem is she is new, and she has to fill 4 hours alone, she came from a 3 hour show as a co-host, that is a big jump. I agree, from what I heard her show is not great, that means there are room for improvement. Give it a chance.
Did anyone watch the 1-hour program "baseball in the bay area" last night on KRON4....it was awful....Guess they had nothing else to talk about as current sport scene is no longer because of the coronavirus.

ReplyDeleteNot that I'm aware of but that doesn't mean anything.

DeleteMy man. Kari Hall did the weather report in her bedroom. I never dreamed I’d be in her bedroom. Ain’t it grand!
ReplyDeleteUh, I've never thought about that, until now.

DeleteSpeaking of KRON4, why does Lawrence Karnow looks like he just woke up????
DeleteBecause he did.

ReplyDeleteYeah, what else is new?
DeleteKron 4 has nothing during the day except for the Emile Legasse infomercial...& it shown nearly all day in the afternoon.
ReplyDeleteA home-made salami pizza on the pressure cooker? BAM! (I had to)
DeleteRich

ReplyDeleteSteve was in the studio this morning and I saw Bill at home last night too. You're right, whatever they're doing it seems to have no consistency.
DeleteJust saw Rosemary in the studio on the noon show. Guess she doesn't get the Bill Martin treatment. That's messed up.
